I am writing in response to your need for a new Principal at Salisbury Elk Lick High School. Over the past
ten years as a teacher, I have acquired a thorough knowledge of the educational environment at SELHS, and I
have spent three years preparing myself for an administrative position by working on a Masters Degree in
Educational Leadership at Frostburg State University. During these years, Ive spent much time considering
how I would handle the Principal position if I were in it. I also have a high level of commitment to our
students, and I have spent many years in dealing with various types of problem solving. Because of these
things, I believe I am the best candidate for this position.
I believe that working hard to build a solidly collaborative environment among teachers, parents, students,
administrators, and community members is of the utmost importance. By building teams that work on solutions
to problems and by getting input from teachers, students and the community, I believe that all stakeholders will
truly feel that they are part of a team. This team mentality will allow us more than ever to achieve the goal of
giving our students the best education that we can.
To me, an improvement in education for our students means many things. It means that we all show an
increased commitment to students. It means that teachers are encouraged to have high expectations because
when a teacher has high expectations, so does his or her students. Along with this, I intend to spend a
considerable amount of time in classrooms observing students and teachers so that we can all work on
improving. Improving education also means working to increase the variety of classes offered to our students
and continuing to support the use of technology in the classroom. I also intend to implement fair but firm
discipline so that the school maintains an academic and orderly environment. Finally, improving student
education means that as much as we tend to dislike standardized testing, an increased focus on how we can
improve our scores needs to occur. We can analyze the data, see where student understanding is weakest, and
refocus our efforts to ensure a higher level of student success.
I have come to feel attached to the Salisbury community over my years as a teacher, and I believe that my
strong commitment to our students, my understanding of the Principal position, and my natural tendency to look
for solutions to problems make me well suited for this position.
