Personal Goals Statement

Ever since I began this nursing school journey, my ultimate goal was to become an
emergency/trauma nurse. Many of my professional and personal goals are geared towards
certifications and courses needed to advance my career in emergency nursing and lead me
toward a possible career in flight nursing. Locke and Latham (2006) wrote that feelings of
success at work are reliant on people seeing that they are able to meet workplace challenges by
pursuing and accomplishing meaningful goals. Additionally, a study by Chow and Chan (2008)
indicated that working for an organization in which goals are shared among employees promotes
mutual understanding and an interchange of knowledge and ideas (p. 460). Therefore, it is
important to have personal and professional goals because they act as achievement benchmarks

on which to measure my growth and success. Just as importantly, goals are also integral to
finding, recognizing, and joining an organization that shares the same goals as I do.
Short Term Goals

I will obtain my certified emergency nurse (CEN) certification within two years
of starting a career as an emergency nurse.

I will complete the trauma nursing core course (TNCC) within two years of
starting my career as an emergency nurse.
Long Term Goals

I will join a committee involved in initiating evidence-based practice changes in

the hospital setting within four years of starting my nursing career.

I will acquire a paramedic certification within 5 years of obtaining a nursing

position in the emergency department in order to make myself a better candidate
for a flight nursing position.
