Celebrating the Life and Memory

of
Fred A. Hill

(Mr. Taft)
Fred A. Hill was born July 29, 1941 in Shelby, North Carolina to
the late Will John Hill, Sr. and late Lizzie Munford Hill. He was the
youngest of six children. His brothers, James and John and his
sisters Bessie and Senora preceded him in death. At a very young
age his father passed away. The family relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio
to be closer to other relatives and to pursue a better life. Being the
youngest child, Fred was very close to his mother.

Fred had fond memories of his early childhood days at Dyer

School, Bloom School, and Porter School in the West End and of
course, the 9th Street Y. Making friends was an attribute that came
easily for Fred. He maintained contact with some of those friends
and classmates until the end of his life. Fred entered Robert A. Taft
High School graduating in 1959. He developed a deep relationship
with many of his teachers that continued throughout his life. While
at Taft, Fred met and later married Eula Cooley, who preceded him
in death in 2000. Two sons, Christian Senghor and Duncan Kenyatte,
were born to this union. Fred was drafted into the Army during the
Vietnam era and served in Germany. After the military, he came
home to work at Keebler and the Milling Machine.

Fred took advantage of his military benefits and entered evening

college at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Industrial Engineering that afforded him employment at
General Electric and Proctor & Gamble. Later he was employed by
The Community Action Agency and Cincinnati Public Schools where
he worked at Taft High School in the Excel Mentoring Program as a
mentor/Youth Advocate for the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. This
premiere Program was considered one of the White House points of
light. While in that Program, the school was visited by former
President of the United States, George Bush. Fred had a picture
taken of himself with the President which he proudly kept on
display.

Fred was an active member of a progressive, entrepreneurial social

club, The Ambassadors-New Breed bringing popular recording
artists to the city.

Fred had assumed the responsibility as President of the Robert A.

Taft High School Alumni Association, Inc. for more than four
decades, demonstrating a deep concern and dedication to the
students and staff of the school. He had been instrumental in
developing and updating mailing lists and email lists, organizing allclass reunions, fundraisers, contributing, collecting and distributing
Thanksgiving baskets to needy families at the school, trips,
organizing black college tours, breakfasts, and luncheons to build
camaraderie and support for the school. Fred often expressed,
Some guys go fishing, bowl, or play golf, and I work with Taft
alumni and the school. This was his passion. He also participated
in many community organizations and most recently in the Taft
High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Fred received awards and
citations for community volunteer work. Many friends looked
forward to Freds annual July cookouts which he hosted at his home.

Fred accepted Christ at an early age. Later in life, Fred was a

devoted charter member of NewSong Ministries under the
Pastorate of Rev. G. Alan Johnson. He developed a relationship with
the Lord and enjoyed participating in church services and activities,
especially Wednesday night bible study. Fred enrolled and
graduated as a member of the inaugural volunteer class at the
Underground Railroad Freedom Center. There he volunteered as a
docent in the slave pen and in the Genealogy Department. He
helped many people find their roots. In retirement, Fred was a
diligent volunteer in several other activities until his health began to
fail.

Freds purpose in this life was fulfilled on July 19, 2016 at the
Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Fond memories will be forever
cherished by his dear sons Christian (Dena) Hill of Cincinnati, Ohio
and Duncan Hill of Atlanta, Georgia, his sister, Odessa Lee of
Cincinnati, Ohio, his sister-in-law Mary (James) of Cincinnati, Ohio,
a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and other
relatives, a special friend and companion, Marcia J. Allen, a Goddaughter, Shelby Jackson, extended families of endearing friends,
the Taft Alumni family and his NewSong Ministries family.
