T he Kentucky Derby, known as the
“greatest two minutes in sports,” will al-
ways be the event that defines Thoroughbred
racing for most people. Its history, pageantry,
upsets, and triumphs are widely chronicled
and hotly debated. Everyone has a favorite
winner and a reason why that particular
“first Saturday in May” was the best.
A horse that wins the Kentucky Derby instantly
becomes a legend, even if its fame only lasts the two
weeks leading up to the Preakness Stakes. No mat-
ter what, that horse, along with his owner, breeder,
trainer, and jockey, has a place in the history books
and a plaque outside the Churchill Downs paddock.
People may forget who finished second or third, but
they always remember the Derby winner.
Even today, more than 35 years later, people ar-
gue that Secretariat is the greatest horse ever to win
the Kentucky Derby. People with longer memories
