Introduction
Education is a powerful word which builds indestructible bridges and deep-rooted
ladders designed as a pathway towards our aims, dreams, goals and success; which can only be
visible to those who strived for it.
Its very undeniable how tremendous is the influence of education to our lives. It affects
every single aspect of every individual which serves as an integral part of ones growth,
development and better formation. This proves that attaining education must be and should be
considered a must to the entire humanity.
The fact how immense is the role of education in ones life and to the entire nation,
intensifies the importance of every noble teacher to the society. This proves that teachers were
not just teachers perse: who occupy the center stage of the classroom, deliver endless talks to
impart knowledge, inflict arduous mind tasks and calculate all data to come up with satisfying
or dissatisfying value which we called grades. But what made the role of every human
engineer exceptional is that they dont just educate the mind but they also take the heart and
the soul for the holistic learning of every individual.
Therefore, teachers must not be disparaged by the society due to the fact that they
provide the proper education which enables us to claim our success, and that the entire process
of becoming a teacher is not that easy. It was like the process of putting a big thread in a tiny
needle. Hence, they must be valued, respected and honored.
According to (Pachejo and Allaga 2013), the importance of teacher is as clear as the
sun, indeed. There is therefore, no more important matter than that of securing sufficient

supply of the right kind of people to the profession and providing them with the best possible
training.
Academic institutions offering teacher education programs, like, Columban College
Inc., shoulder a challenging yet transcending responsibility of shaping a teacher with apt
caliber to deliver the goods, thoroughly competent in the teaching discipline, and ready for
the monumental task of extending the frontiers of knowledge in their area of specialization.
The expectations for every institution in forming highly-competent and skilled teachers
is very high. The plethora of standards, norms, and decisive factors regarding the success of an
institution reflects the peoples concern on quality education. (Pachejo and Allaga 2013)
The success of an institution substantiate through the outcomes of the graduates in their
chosen fields or world of work as professionals contributing to the meaningfully to the everchanging world. But the first thing that gauge the educational quality is the performance of
teacher education graduates in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) of the
Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). (Figuerres 2010)
When Republic Act (RA) 7836, (an Act to Strengthen the Regulation and Supervision
of the Practice of Teaching in the Philippines and Prescribing a Licensure Examination for
Teachers and for Other Purposes) otherwise known as the Philippine Teachers
Professionalization Act of 1994 became a law on December 16, 1994, the Professional
Regulation Commission (PRC) was tasked to strengthen the supervision and regulation of the
teaching profession. The PRC then prescribed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET).
(Dionisio 2015)

Article IV, Section 27 of the same Act stipulates that except otherwise allowed under
this Act, no person shall practice or offer to practice the teaching profession in the Philippines
or be appointed as teacher to any position calling for a teaching position without having
previously obtained a valid certificate of registration and a valid professional license from the
Commission. The registration for a valid professional license requires the registrant to pass the
LET. (Dionisio 2015)
To pass the examination, graduates should obtain the passing rate of 75% in the three
areas: General Education, Professional Education and their Specialization. Institutions are
accountable for equipping their students the knowledge, skills and values in order to be a LET
ready and field ready.

Therefore, providing enrichment programs for all student-teachers as preparation for

the Licensure Exam and in the field of teaching is a must to every Teacher Education
Institutions. Yet every student must take full responsibility in enriching and preparing his mind,
body and heart in becoming full-pledged, passionate, resilient and dedicated educator.

Every year the population of Columban College Education graduates taking the
Licensure Examination for Teachers is constantly increasing. There are about 100 students per
year who take the exam: about 60% are fresh graduates or first takers and about 40% are
second takers. More than 60% of the takers came from the BSED and less than 40% came
from the BEED.
According to the data weve gathered, it revealed that only 40% of the total number of
takers successfully attained the required average to pass the exam. It showed that the ratio of
passers in a group of 10 is 4 out of 10.
Based on the scores released by the PRC, more than half of the takers failed to attain
75% average either in General Education or Professional Education and some of them failed in
both. Yet the result of the Assessment for Teachers Potential for the past years are so much
alike with the LET result. These two events are very alarming and must given priority.
Hence, the college together with the full cooperation of the students must provide
actions and interventions in order to enhance the competencies of the all education graduates
who must be LET prepared and field ready.

Statement of Objectives

The research aims to maintain and sustain retention of knowledge among students
which can greatly contribute to strengthen the foundation of their knowledge as they prepare
themselves for the LET and the field of teaching through the Student-Teachers Enhancement
Program.
The STEP Program will be based on the result of this years Assessment for Teacher
Potential taken by to outgoing 3rd year education students wherein the Professional Education
subject with the lowest average will be taken as the target for enhancement.
This research promotes integration of technology in the comprehensive process of
molding student-teachers who are to be a confident and competent LET and field ready.
Assumptions
The following assumptions are made:
1. Most of the 3rd year students got below average percentage on the Assessment for
Teaching Potential (ATP) examination.
2. Mastery of the Professional Education subjects is an essential factor to pass the LET
and to become an effective and efficient educator.
3. Regular review programs prevent knowledge lost and promote retention of learnings.

Research Question
1. What Profed subject garnered the lowest average according to the ATP?
5

2. How significant is the ATP to the LET?
3. What can the students and the institution do to enhance the Profed competencies of
every education students?
4. How can we maintain and sustain students retentive knowledge?
5. Does the integration of technology in the enhancement program will be helpful?
6. What will be the impact of the STEP to the students and graduates?
7. How can the College of Education maintain the STEP for all levels?
Significance of Study
This research is valuable to the following:
To the Education students, it recalls what they have learned yet forgotten and deepens
their knowledge through the available references to be found at the site as well as the trivia,
games and weekly assessment. It will equipped them in facing the challenges in the field of
teaching and to the first obstacle as an educator: the Licensure Examination for Teachers.
To the professors, this ensures that the knowledge they imparted to their students will
always be remembered. This ensures the fruits of their hard labor from the seed that they
sowed, watered, cared and loved. This can also be a subject for studies.
To the institution, the program can contribute in enhancing students competencies in
teaching as the key raising the percentage of passers in the College of Education which can be

used as a basis for accreditation and encouraging Highschool students to take Columban
College as a school for their tertiary education.
To the researchers, this will be the mode to accomplish RES 101 and RES 102 while
also equipping ourselves to become LET ready and field ready.
