Celebrating the hills of Pune

through Art, Design and Architecture

Artist: Jayant Joshi

Name of Artwork: Human Condition

Concept:
This visual signifies a perennial unrest against injustice, protest, struggle and dilemma of contemporary human existence,
angst. Our theme 'Save Hills' explains rampant destruction and disregard for Nature propelled by 'Human Greed'
which is working against the laws of peaceful existence.

COME CONTRIBUTE CELEBRATE

Its an appeal to all the art lovers of Pune, to come together, contribute towards their passion for art and celebrate as well as popularize this creative cause and
make it a success.

MOHOR-PUNE BIENNALE 2013

MOHOR- PUNE BIENNALE is a grass-root movement to promote and showcase creative talent from various disciplines of arts, design and architecture. The
emphasis in it is on making art more public and accessible in various forms including Painting, Sculpture, Design, Film, Architecture, Photography,
Environment and Performing Arts.
The theme of the inaugural Biennale is Celebrating the Hills of Pune as they represent significant public spaces in the city. The hills in and around the city
have given it a distinct geographical and cultural identity. Mohor- Pune Biennale: Celebrating hills through arts, invites artists to respond to and reconsider the
everyday cultural life of the city in the light of our relationship with the hills.

Architecture
The Architecture segment of Pune Biennale comprises
of three major activities designed under the guidance of
well-known architects.
1. Visioning Hills as Public Spaces: A dialogue with
eminent architects like Mohammad Shaheer
(Eminent Landscape Architect, Delhi) Christopher
Benninger (Eminent Architect, Pune), Prakash Gole
(Eminent Environmentalist, Pune), M. N. Buch (IAS,
Bhopal) and Sujit Patwardhan (Activist, Pune).
Moderated by architect Narendra Dengle, in
association with Forum for Exchange and Excellence
in Design (FEED).
2. Tekdi Alekhan: A joint workshop for budding
Architects of Pune, mentored by architect Prasanna
Desai, showcasing various proposals for hills of
Parvati by Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID).
Also heritage walks and talks by eminent historians.
3. Developing Hills as Public Spaces: Design Idea
competition for students guided by professionals in
association with Indian Institute of Architects (IIA),
Pune.

Design
The Design stream, under the guidance
of the Association Designers of India (ADI), is
attempting to expand the horizons of Design by
exhibiting exclusive work at a public platform to
reach out the to the grass root level.
This segment would showcase designed work
as well as engage the audience with work in
Design and Craft Sectors. Efforts by renowned
designers like Bala Mahajan, Milind Gokhale,
Nachiket Thakur, Darpana Athale, Siddharth
Kabra and Mukund Athale are taking shape to
contribute towards a better understanding of
different perspectives in this field.

Environment
The Environment stream will be directed
by Dr. Erach Bharucha - an eminent
environmentalist. The significance of Hills for
the environment will be highlighted by inclusive
activities like Nature walks, Eco Walks, Bird
nesting etc involving common people, youth and
students to generate awareness and support for
this cause. People like Dr. Mandar Datar, Vinay
Kolte, Anish Soman, Charuhas Kolhatkar,
Hrishikesh Talwalkar and Vishwajeet Naik
would be leading the segment.

Films
Films are emerging as a very powerful medium to
express oneself. The Films stream will be guided
by the ace film critic and educator,
Samar Nakhate along with Mihir Apte and
Atul Patwardhan. This segment includes
exhibition of short-films selected through open
competition and screening of some old
documentaries and films on Pune. The short film
festival of the Pune Biennale is also being
organised by International Cultural Exchange
(ICE).

Paintings
As one of the most visible and accessible forms
of visual arts, painting provides an excellent
avenue for expressing landscapes. Under this
segment, an exclusive exhibition is being hosted
under the guidance of curators like Subodh
Kerkar and Sujata Dharap showcasing works of
several artists from all over India as well as Pune.
15 artworks by artists from all over the country
will be featured as highlight of this exhibition. Idea
is to showcase the work right from the traditional
water colors to the contemporary media and
movements. Inclusive and par ticipatory
workshops for children, senior citizens,
demonstrations will be conducted on the hills
where they will get hands on experience and bring
them closer to their creative senses.
The street art project in this segment has
emerged with the idea of bringing some life to the
worn out, dead and dry walls of the city, convert
them into live canvases, so that the passers by
can relate to and add an image to their otherwise
mundane walks.

Performing Arts
The Performing Arts stream in the Pune Biennale
under the enthusiastic direction of Sharangdhar
Sathe, will add on to the creative mood. There will
be a variety of performances. Some of the
performances are stand-alone, where as some
are designed to fuse along with other art-forms.
With involvement of artists such as Manisha
Sathe, Rahul Deshpande and Mrinal DeoKulkarni, the performing arts stream is set to
appeal to one and all.

Photography
The Photography stream of Pune Biennale will be
guided by Jayant Joshi, one of the most senior
and well respected artists in the field, along with
ace photographer Rajan Chaughule. In this
segment, there will be an invited exhibition
including the works on hill from well-known
photographers. It is also an attempt to educate
the masses about photography through
workshops and seminars.

Sculpture
The sculpture segment aims to showcase the
conventional and the contemporary art together.
With the likes of Raju Sutar, Indranil Garai,
Vaishali Oak, Falguni Gokhale and Ketaki
Pimpalkhare, the sculpture installations scene at
the Pune Biennale is quite stimulating. The
ceramic artists like the potters group would bring
altogether different perspective of looking at
pottery. Public demonstrations of ceramic art,
metal-craft, bamboo craft and other newer forms
will also take place.
