The festive season of Christmas will be here very
soon. Many homes will be traditionally decorated
with Christmas trees; department stores will be
festooned with Christmas lights and streaming echo
of Christmas songs; mailboxes will be filled with
greeting cards and gifts; and the list goes on.
Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the
birth of Jesus Christ, observed most commonly on
December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration
among billions of people around the world.

Christmas the historical context


If you search through the history, you will come
across the fact that the celebration of Christmas, in
fact, originated before Christianity. In ancient times,
man depended on the sun for light, and heat for their
agriculture. As a result, man followed the sun's yearly
course through the heavens. Feasts and celebrations
were held at different times of the year to help the sun
move round the solar system. In the Roman world,
this was translated into the weeklong celebration of
Saturnalia, which started on December 17th and
ended with the feast of Brumalia, the birthday, or
rebirth of the sun. The feast fell on December 25th.
However, there is no clear historical evidence when
the Christian world first celebrated Christmas.
Records show that during the first three centuries of
the Christian era, there was opposition in the churches
to the pagan custom of celebrating birthdays. But by
the fourth century, the Chronograph of 354 contained
a list of Christian feasts and made reference to the
feast of the nativity of Christ. This information goes
back to an earlier writing of the year 336 AD, and
therefore Christmas appears to have already been
celebrated in the last year of Emperor Constantine.
By the end of the fourth century, the Christian world
was celebrating Christmas. December 25th was the
date chosen for the celebration (with the exception of
the Eastern churches, which celebrated it on January
6th). Perhaps the church at that time wanted to turn
the pagan celebration of the winter solstice into a day
of adoration of Christ. Another possibility is that this
was one way for the Christians of that time to cling
even closer to Christ who was their light and sun, and
the 25th of December was chosen to provide an
antithesis to the Roman pagan feast.
Over the years, many customs have developed around
the celebrations of Christmas. None of these is
biblical in nature. Then, the real question is whether
we should observe an event that is not mentioned in
the Bible, and should we celebrate an event that has
its roots in pagan worship. Some of us may wish to
take the middle ground and argue that we are not
treating Christmas as a religious celebration, rather,
we are just celebrating the season of peace and
goodwill. The sad part is that very often Christmas
has become an occasion for overindulgence in food,
drinks, and even acts contrary to the word of God.

Christmas the Biblical context


Other than a certain traditional or historical context,
the celebration has no reference in the Bible. For
example, if you take your Bible and look for a
mention of Santa Claus, holly wreaths, and Christmas
trees; whether Jesus or His disciples ever celebrated
Christmas; whether He had ever instructed that we
should commemorate the day of His birth, or whether
there is any proof that He was born on December 25th,
none of these things are mentioned in the Bible.
The gospel writers recorded the nativity story and the
events surrounding the Lord's birth, but never once
did they specify that this event should be celebrated.
The Lord Jesus told His disciples to remember His
death by partaking the Holy Communion, but He was
completely silent about remembering His birthday.
Likewise, there is no evidence in the New Testament
that the early church ever celebrated Christmas. If
God had wanted us to celebrate Christ's birthday,
would He not have instructed us to do so in the Bible?

origin, and of the confusions surrounding the exact


date and time of His birth, it is absolutely true that
God the Father sent His Son to the world for our
salvation. It is a time of God showing His great
love for us. It was a volunteer mission. Jesus could
have held on to His place in the Godhead. He could
have stayed in heaven enjoying all the benefits of
being God. But instead, He emptied Himself and
became a servant to the men that He created. How
was He sent? Why was He sent? Let us look at the
sending of the Son of God.

The Prophecy of the Sending


The sending of the Son of God was not an
afterthought. It was a plan that was conceived
before creation. It was foretold in the genealogy in
Genesis 5, and it was already given that God
Himself would be sent to earth. It was prophesied
plainly in 740 B.C., by the prophet Isaiah (Isa. 9:6).
So the sending of His son by being born of a virgin
was prophesied.

The Promise of the Sending


When the time came for the prophecy to be
fulfilled, the sending was promised to the virgin
that would bear the Son of God. God had chosen
Mary to be the mother of Jesus. But Mary doesnt
mention this important fact. She does say, I am
glad because of God my Saviour, and praises Him
because He made this promise to our ancestors.
Marys personal role in Gods work of salvation is
in the background of her thoughts.

The Procedure of the Sending


When His mother Mary had been betrothed to
Joseph, before they came together she was found to
be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her
husband, being a righteous man, and not wanting to
disgrace her, desired to put her away secretly. But
when he had considered this, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of
David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife;
for that which has been conceived in her is of the
Holy Spirit. And she will bear a Son; and you shall
call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His
people from their sins." And Joseph arose from his
sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded
him, and took {her} as his wife, and kept her a
virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called
His name Jesus.
Micah, a prophet who lived over 700 years before
the events in Matthew, predicted that in
unimportant little Bethlehem a leader would be
born who came from eternity past. But this virgin
lived in the city of Nazareth in the region of
Galilee. How would He get them to Bethlehem,
over three days' journey away, to have this child,
according to prophesied procedure? About this time
Emperor Augustus gave orders for the names of all
the people to be listed in record books, and
everyone had to record books, and everyone had to
go to their own hometown to be listed. And Joseph
went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to
Judea, to the city of David, which is called
Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family

of David, in order to register, along with Mary, who


was engaged to him, and was with child. And it came
about that while they were there, the days were
completed for her to give birth. Thus, when Mary the
virgin's time came to give birth, there they were in
Bethlehem!

The Proclamation of the Sending


Once the Son of God had been sent, there went forth
two proclamations. A supernatural star began to
shine far in the east, beckoning magi to make the
journey to Israel which took some time to get there.
Another proclamation reached some shepherds
staying out in the fields near Bethlehem, and keeping
watch over their flock by night: .. for today in the
city of David there has been born for you a Savior,
who is Christ the Lord. And suddenly there
appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the
highest, And on earth peace among men with whom
He is pleased." And when the angels had gone away
from them into heaven, the shepherds came in haste
and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the
baby as He lay in the manger. And when they had
seen this, they made known the statement which had
been told them about this Child. And all who heard it
wondered at the things which were told by the
shepherds. But Mary treasured up all these things,
pondering them in her heart.

The Purpose of the Sending


The whole reason He came was not to be born, but to
be killed. The reason Jesus was sent was that the
world needed to be saved from the penalty of their
sin. So that we would have the opportunity to believe
in Him, which results in our eternal life. The Son of
God was the propitiation for our sins - the
reconciliation between a holy God and our unholy
sin. God loved us so much, but couldn't accept our
sin. It had to be punished by death. So that little Baby
was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and
ultimately was killed to pay for our sins.

The Real Christmas


To conclude, there is no legitimate scriptural reason
not to celebrate Christmas. At the same time, there is
no biblical mandate to celebrate it, either. In the end,
of course, whether or not to celebrate Christmas is a
personal decision. But the most important thing is
that we can be truly happy at Christmas if we believe
that Jesus died for our sins, and we can ask Him to
come into our hearts and forgive us. Then, we are
clean and made whole. We can know that heaven is a
place where we can go to when this life is over. No
matter what may be happening, we can know that we
are His children. Heaven will be our home one day.
There is a beautiful promise of life under Gods
government of the future. Give up all your
confusions about Christmas and look at Christmas in
a new way this year. This is the year to invite Jesus
into your heart. You will then have a real Merry
Christmas. The joy and peace you will receive will
last all year as you look to God for all your needs to
be met. Let Jesus be the reason for the Season and
Rejoice. He is coming soon.

The Waiting Room


Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you:
therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.
For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all
those who wait for him. (Isaiah 30:18)

immediate attention and action. We bring our
petitions and supplications to God in prayer, but
were often forced to wait. God usually sends
us, in fact, directly to the waiting room, not to the
surgical suits. Go, he says, and wait. Trust
me. I know what Im doing. This isnt my first
operation.

had a cell phone, wed call up God directly and
ask what was taking so long. Instead, we
worry. It gives us something to do. Why arent

how desperate we are? Doesnt he know
were on a deadline here?

We all know that hospitals have them.

Theyre
called waiting rooms. Sometimes theyre small
areas designed for families waiting to see loved
ones in intensive-care units, where time for visits
is often limited to five or ten-minute intervals
every two hours. Sometimes they are large
congregating areas where friends and relatives
gather, waiting for loved ones to come out of
surgery. People spend a lot of time in waiting
rooms.
Waiting for news of a loved one is never easy.
The adage Time marches on seems not to
apply to these seemingly interminable situations
of waiting for good news or bad. Minutes go by
like hours, hours like days. The score seems
marked to be played largo. We want it to be
presto. Checking the clock on the wall and
pacing around the room are the ;main activities
of people in hospital waiting rooms.
Waiting for God to answer our prayers is a lot like
being a relative or friend in a waiting room. This
is especially true when we have a concern for a
loved one or for ourselves that, to us, seems

The people of God have always had trouble


waiting. This was true of the Israelites. Their
tendency was to run ahead and speed upon
horse. God was constantly reminding them
there was a better way. He encouraged them
to reflect on their history. Whenever enemies
were pursuing them, the Isreelites tended to run.
Gods advice was always different. Stand still.
Trust. Wait. Dont be concerned with the time.
In returning and rest you shall be saved, in
quietness and in trust shall be your strength (Is
30: 15-16)

God, too, has spent a considerable amount of
