Introducing Tim Bonner as

Our New Intern of Adult Ministries
Tim is a native Kansan and has lived in Lawrence since 2001 with his wife, Nancy. They
have nine grandchildren who are a very important part of their lives. Three of them live
here, so you will see them together at church
activities. Tim and Nancy have both retired
from careers in community mental health
where they worked as psychotherapists. Along
with his bachelor degree, Tim has a master degree from Kansas State University in human
development and family studies. He also obtained a Master of Arts degree from U. M. K. C. in counseling psychology. Tim likes learning, as evidenced by his current enrollment at Central
Baptist Theological Seminary. Along with holistic health and comparative religion, Tims other interests include world travel and watching
sports, especially the K.C. Royals. Tim and Nancy have passion for social diversity, tolerance and justice. They are part of Team Haiti mission
team that traveled to Cap Haitian in 2011 to work on the foundation of a
new school building. They also helped sponsor Dezo, our Haitian missionary living here. Tim will begin his First Baptist duties (10 hours per
week) on August 1. Welcome Tim!

Top 5 Most Misquoted Passages of Scripture

In one of my favorite movies of all time, The Princess Bride, the Spanish swordsman
Inigo Montoya corrects the brilliant Vizzini with the classic line:

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it
means.
Similarly, most of us have probably been guilty of using a word or phrase that we
thought meant one thing, but eventually found out that it meant something entirely
different.
This is true of certain passages of Scripture, as well. How often do we quote a passage out of a fuzzy memory from Sunday school or a sermon somewhere, but do
we really know what the verse means? What the context is? Why the author might
have been using that phrase or sentence? In the coming weeks, we will explore
together six verses that often get used out of context, and together consider what
they might have meantand might mean to us today.

The newest First Baptist cookbook is in the

house! To purchase,
simply choose an option:
**Option #1: Copies are available each
Sunday morning, or
you may call the
church office to
schedule a time to
pick one up. The
books are $15.00 and
if you will pre-order through the church office we can
make sure we always have enough on hand.
**Option #2: There is a link on the church website
where you can purchase a digital and/or a hard copy delivered right to your door or computer. (Please be aware
there is a small shipping/handling charge for hard copies.)
Correction! Please note on pg. 139, the Angel Food
cake recipe should be baked at 350 degrees instead of
250.

Anytime Deacons Fund Offering

Beginning this Sunday, you are invited to give to the Deacons Fund on ANY Sunday of your choosing. In the past,
the pattern has been to take a collection only on the first
Sunday of the month. Many of you have requested additional opportunities to give. Beginning this Sunday, you
will you find a Deacons Fund envelope near the front
doors each week or you can ask for one from any usher.
As soon as we receive our new sanctuary chairs, perhaps
we can place an envelope in a pew pocket. If you prefer
to use your computer, you can donate through the
churchs website SimpleGive.
The Deacons Fund financially assists those within our
congregation, followed by those who come for help from
the Lawrence community. Appointments are made
through the church office for interviews with Nancy Bonner and needs are carefully considered prior to making
funds available. (Funds are paid directly to the utility
company, landlord, or other agency). Nancys background
in social work helps explore long term solutions as well as
other resources.

As funds allow, a Deacons Assistance Day is held for
the community one day per month. In this past quarter we
have assisted 16 families from the Lawrence community
and 1 within our own church body.
Your continued faithful contributions to this important
ministry are much appreciated. We have become known in
the community as a church who cares by organizations
such as Bert Nash, Douglas County Housing Authority,
and ECKAN.
If you have an interest in serving as a part of this ministry, please contact Jenny Purvis, Nancy Bonner, or Verlin
Gilbert.
