Brenna Skye Reeves helps her grandmother, Rene Ross hand address birthday cards in the office.

(see note on page three)

In this part of Humboldt County summers are different! Four years

in, and I am still surprised when on a July or August morning I wake up to
mist and fog swirling around the neighborhood. I grew up in England,
where the summer often brings many consecutive days of rain, as do the
spring winter and fall! There is a legend about summer rain associated
with St. Swithin (or Swithun) whose feast day is July 15. Swithin was an
Anglo-Saxon Bishop of Winchester who died in around 862. As he
wished, he was buried outside the church with the common people but,
after being made patron saint of Winchester Cathedral in 971, his body
was dug up and moved to a new indoor shrine. According to some
writers, this caused sufficient displeasure in the heavens for a terrible downpour to strike the church
and continue unabated for 40 days, hence the legend. Other writers disagree with this, but the legend
persisted giving us this rhyme.
St. Swithuns day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St. Swithuns day if thou be fair
For forty days twill rain nae mare.
Believe me when I tell you that I can remember English summers when it seemed to rain for at least
forty days, so I do enjoy the misty mornings and beautiful clear afternoons of the North Coast.
We are now in the month of August often known as the Dog Days of summer, another legend
comes along with this name but Ill save that for another time. While here on the North Coast we
may not experience the sultry heat of the eastern and southern states, August can bring with it a kind
of lethargy, summer pastimes are beginning to pale, school looms on the horizon and many of us find
ourselves looking forward to the return of normal routines in September.
At Christ Church we have begun to make preparations for the fall. Our Stewardship Committee has
met and, under the leadership of Sanford Pyron, we have some great activities planned for October.
Teaser: Are you an Angel, a Saint?
Your priests, about to be deacons, and Elizabeth Harper-Lawson who oversees our Eucharistic
Visitor program, have formed a Pastoral Care group to meet every two weeks to help coordinate the
care of those who need a little extra TLC.
You may have noticed that we regularly have small children worshipping with us on Sundays. My
hope is that we can have a simple ongoing education program available for them, but in order to do
this we will need some volunteers. Please let me know if you are willing and able to help with this
2

very important ministry. I am not looking for a weekly commitment from any individual, but rather
a team/group of folk who would lead the program on a rotating basis, as and when needed.
Another project for the fall is the production of a new parish directory. Our current edition dates
from 2014 and is rather out of date. Look for update sheets soon, and remember that any published
directory can only be as accurate as the information we are given. Please help us by correcting your
entry if needed.
Know that I am generally in the parish office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and would be
happy to see you should you wish to stop by.
In the meantime, remember to pray for Anne Pierson and Pam Gossard who are to be ordained to the
Sacred Order of Deacons on August 13 Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. Pam will celebrate her first
Sunday as a deacon with us on August 14, Anne the following Sunday August 21. Mark your
calendars and plan to be at church to celebrate with them.
May God be with you all,

The Rev. K. Lesley McCloghrie

Interim Rector

On the cover:
One of the lesser known ministries at Christ Church is one that involves hand-addressing the birthday
and anniversary cards that go out to parishioners every month. Rene Ross has been doing it for over
a year and sometimes she gets a little help from her friends. In this case, it was her grand-daughter,
Brenna Skye Reeves, who was visiting from New Zealand with her family in July. You can see
Brenna holding up a card that went out to Joan Stewart. Thank you, Brenna for helping with this
ministry!
The rest of Brennas Family include her parents, Deirdre and Andy Reeves, and her sister, Carys
Rene Reeves. P.S. Brenna also helped pick up and sort the mail.

Whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant,

and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as
the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life
a ransom for many. Matthew 20:26b-28.
I am pleased to let you know that we are moving ahead
(although slowly) with the calling of a new rector. At the direction of
Canon Andrea McMillen, Canon of the Ordinary to Bishop Beisner, a
search committee has been formed and the following members of
Christ Church have agreed to serve:
Lynne Bean, Harry Freeman, Peg Gardner, Paul Gossard, Byrd Lochtie, Catherine Mace,
Mary McNelis, Jackie Moore, Marita Musante, John Patton, Bob Rex, Marty Van Zandt, Belinda
Zander Chairperson, and Susan Waley Chaplain.
The calling process we are entering into is also referred to as the discernment process and the
committee can either be called a search or discernment committee. However it is called, the members of the committee are making a substantial commitment of their time.
Calling a new rector is not like hiring in the secular world. The person will not be hired but
called to a ministry. The role of the committee is to discern the best person for the vestry to call.
There may be feelings of anxiety during the process by church members, as well as committee members. Faithful prayer and communication can help diffuse these feelings. So please pray
and give thanks for the people on the committee who have agreed to serve you, our church and God
during this challenging time.

Lyn Klay, Senior Warden

Recently I had the fun of driving with a visiting friend to see the
Trees of Mystery. We wandered slowly through the forest, enjoying the
glorious diversity of plant life and the stunning, towering trees. We enjoyed the enthusiasm of children and chatted with parents and grandparents. Finally we got to the gondolas and rode up through the trees to the
top of the ridge. As always, the wonder of Gods complex and glorious
creation as revealed in this part of the world was an invitation to awe and
stillness. You just cant absorb it in a few seconds. You cant stick to a
schedule or be in a hurry if you want to receive such a gift. Yet I was startled to notice some of the people hurry along the trail, ride all that way up
the mountain, walk once around the top of the viewing platform, maybe
pose their kids for a couple of quick photos, and hurry everyone back to
the gondola to go back down. They missed so much and their children lost out.
Sometimes I wonder if that happens in our worship. Do we allow ourselves the time we need to
offer ourselves and to receive the gifts that God wants to give us?
One of the things were trying to do at Christ Church is allow space for reflection between the
ending of one reading and the beginning of the next. Other brief times for reflection are offered after
the sermon, during the Prayers of the People, before the confession of sin, and at the moment of the
breaking of bread. There is time for silent openness after we receive the bread and wine. Silent reception of Gods gifts, taking time to be attentive, entering the wonder of what we are doing, need not
be lengthy to be profoundly helpful. There are likely to be times when the silence feels empty and
wasteful. There may be times when you are startled by a sudden insight, a moment of profound joy, a
sense of Gods love for you. A painful memory or loss may surface as a reminder of something that
still needs healing or needs healing at deeper levels. In all of these, the Spirit of God is at work within and among us.
We are blessed beyond comprehension. We live in an incredibly beautiful part of the world.
We have a parish with wonderful loving people. We are free to worship God without fear. We have
rich liturgy to help us be more open to God. If we choose, we can add the gift of silent openness and
time to receive more and more from the One who Creates, Redeems and ever Sustains us.

Mother Nancy has asked that the following letter from the Eureka Interfaith Fellowship be included in the Chronicle.

Eureka Interfaith Fellowship Response to Violence

Eureka, CA, July 21, 2016
Like many in our nation, the members of Eureka Interfaith Fellowship have been
horrified by recent outbreaks of violence.
We are all in a bit of shock. Many of us are asking how can these things happen?
Why would God let them happen? While each of us will answer in our own way,
we know that as spiritual leaders we need to encourage ourselves and members to live up to the
highest moral teachings within our communities. We need to more fully rely on God to heal the
hearts and lives touched by recent violence.
Perhaps even more importantly, we all need to ask what can we do in light of recent tragic events?
The members of Eureka Interfaith Fellowship summon our respective faith communities, and our
larger human community, to affirm the need to act with love, compassion and kindnessespecially
during times of conflict and disagreement.
The following members of the Eureka Interfaith Fellowship seek to provide support to our community in healing the wounds these violent activities have caused. We thus take a stand for peace, knowing that regardless of the color of their skin or the uniform they wear, every person is a beloved child
of God who deserves to live the full life they were created to live.
We will soon announce some times and places where people in our community can gather for prayer
and healing.
Blessings to all and to our nation in this time of distress,

Crab Fest at Sts. Martha and Mary!

Saints. Martha and Mary Episcopal Mission in Trinidad is blessed to have Susan and Zach Rotwein
in the congregation! To celebrate the Fourth of July this year, Susan and Zach, crab fishermen and
owners of Capn Zachs Crab House, provided copious amounts of fresh crab with all the trimmings
for the hungry and very appreciative crowd. Others brought salads, bread, fruit, cheesecake, lemon
bars, and wine to round out the meal. Joy in community at its best!!

Sundays at 4 final concert

Our third and final summer concert of the Sundays at 4 series will be
on Sunday, August 28, at 4:00 p.m. The program, The Colors of the Organ,
will feature three local organists performing music that displays the
individual tone-colors of the Kegg pipe organ. From J.S. Bach to Blues on
the Flues, you will have an opportunity learn about and listen to the many
different ranks of pipes on the Kegg organ each with its own unique tone
quality and color. Much as an artist uses color in painting, composers for
the pipe organ use tone color to convey their message in the music they write. While some ranks of
pipes are more easily recognizable than others (e.g., flutes, reeds, strings), you will also hear the
sounds of diapasons, mixtures, and the unique sound of the Chimes and Zimbelstern.
Performing on the Kegg organ will be three local organists: Gary Klemp, Organist at the
Eureka Seventh-day Adventist Church, Douglas Moorehead, Organist Emeritus at Christ Episcopal
Church, and Merry Phillips, Organist at Christ Episcopal Church. All three organists are members of
the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and have served as officers of the local Sequoia Chapter of
the AGO.
Please join us for this informal, educational, and (only!) one-hour long concert. It will be a
great opportunity to learn more about the Kegg organ and hear some fun organ music. Bring the
family and/or friends and enjoy a delightful end to the weekend. The concert is free and open to the
public. As always, free-will donations are happily accepted and go towards supporting future
concerts.

L-R: Merry Phillips, Charles Kegg, Logan Hatch and Earl Morgan
Charles Kegg and his assistant were here this week to upgrade the control system on the organ.

Try as I might, I can't seem to think of anything to tell you. I guess I

am getting excited about my trip to Mongolia! It is only a week and half
away. So,I can only give you little information and make requests for a few
things.
Barry is my back-up. Thank you, Barry. And all requests or notifications will pass through the office. Dan Phillips has always helped me also.
He will be working with Barry. John Hammond is also available, too.
I am leaving the garden in the trusted hands of Irene Hannaford. She
has been working a couple or so hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays for
months. (She has also made me work those extra hours too!) She would
love to have extra hands in keeping the gardens tamed. We do need to have G Street trees and bushes
behind the Chapel and Zander Building pruned back. Plus the reduction of the number of Lily of the
Valley (big blue flower plants) cut back everywhere but it is most important in east part of the parking lot. People are sleeping behind them and leaving their stuff.
Please walk around the whole Church Campus. We need people to know that we are aware of
everything that goes on in our block. We know that the "homeless" are having a very difficult time,
but it is not legal to use our grounds for sleeping or storage. Please be alert to changes.
Thank you and I will keep you, my committee, in my prayers while I am gone,
Beth

Prayer Quilts, Blankets and Bags with Quilters Plus

Mark your calendars now for Wednesday morning, September 7 in Lewis Hall! Quilters Plus
will be beginning the Fall season with renewed energy. There will be several projects from which to
choose - prayer quilts, fleece blankets for foster children, and drawstring bags for the Eureka Rescue
Mission. We will also be looking at some possible new ideas. Beginners and newcomers are welcome. We'll have good conversation, coffee, and snacks, too, as we catch up on each other's summer
activities. Questions? Check with Joan Stewart or Peg Gardner.
