Material Specification

GMW15520

Interior Paint for Rigid Olefins

1 Scope
1.1 Material Description. The requirements listed in this specification must be met by all interior paint systems
used in all GM vehicle interiors. Paint systems must follow the steps in Figure 1 to complete the paint approval
process of a part.

Note: APOPS = Approved Paint on Parts

Figure 1: Paint Approval Process of a Part

1.2 Symbols.
1.2.1 Paint Haptics. For a paint material approval, the paint system is required to be listed as approved in the
GM Materials File (MATSPC) system. Paint systems approved to this specification shall be required to carry a
type suffix to indicate the haptic feel that it has to the human skin. The suffix system shall be:

Type A: Soft Touch

Type B: Fabric Feel

Type C: Hard Touch

Type D: Semi-soft Touch

Type F: Satin Touch per GMHM012 Master

Type M: Metallic
Type A, Type B, Type D, and Type F haptic feel must be approved by the Global Haptic Lead prior to evaluating
the paint system performance.
1.2.2 Basecoat/Clearcoat (BC) Applications. Basecoat plus clearcoat systems approved to this specification
shall be approved with the symbol (BC) following the haptic suffix.
1.3 Applicability. This specification covers requirements for an interior, waterborne or solventborne, one or two
component paint system for use on parts made of paintable olefins including rigid thermoplastic polyolefins
(TPO) and polypropylenes (PP). All substrates must be tested per GMW16172 to confirm paintability.
1.4 Remarks. TPO and PP substrates can be pretreated by priming, fluorination, chlorination, plasma, flame,
etc. A single pretreatment is required to achieve initial paint approval. The initial paint approval shall be linked to
the specific pretreatment as listed on MATSPC. Additional pretreatments using the specific approved paint must
be evaluated per Column 1B in Table 1 and added to the comments section of the initial MATSPC approval.

Note 1: Testing to be completed on one panel per combination listed above in Table 1.
Note 2: Paint thickness must be specified in paint suppliers data sheet. Default values: 25 m 5 m for Type C, 50 m 5 m for
Types A/B/D/F, 5 m to 10 m for adhesion promoters, 25 m 5 m for primers. New Type M and (BC) colors in approved technologies
to note minimum film thickness in Appearance Database (Blue Sky). Minimum film thickness for each paint layer is technology based and
shall be defined at technology approval and noted in MATSPC.
Note 3: Default is to perform Oven Aging at 105 C unless Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) of plastic is lower. If lower, the temperature
shall be defined at 85 C or 95 C, whichever is just below the HDT. Default is to use HDT at 455 kPa.
Note 4: Use the cleaners: Sonax Window Cleaner 338241 (Europe), Ammoniated Window Cleaner (North America), Sonax Interior Cleaner
321200 (Europe), Fantastik or Formula 409 (North America), Sonax Stain Remover 653200 (Europe), Armor-All (North America), Armor-All
Protectant (North America). If these cleaners are not available within region, use appropriate cleaners commonly used for automotive interior.
Note 5: If paint is stained but has not lost adhesion or lifted from the substrate, place one panel per substrate in an oven at 80 C for 4 h.
Compare the baked panel to an unbaked panels. The baked panel should show decreased staining. If staining is too severe, GM Materials
Engineering will reject the submission.
Note 6: For a new pretreatment approval, perform these tests only when approving a new primer or adhesion promoter.
Note 7: Natural Weathering (Color) test should be performed on GMW16727, Polycarbonate (PC) substrate only.
Note 8: TNR = Temperature Normalized Radiation.
Note 9: For ASTM method, molded plaques either 10 mm diameter 3.2 mm, or 100 mm 100 mm 3.2 mm. For ISO method, molded
plaques should be 60 mm diameter 2 mm, or 60 mm 60 mm 2 mm. Report any alternative plaque thickness used. Condition panels at
-30 C for 4 h minimum prior to impact. The painted samples must be reverse impacted at the low temperature. Removing the painted panels
from the low temperature environment and impacting at room temperature is not allowable.

4 Manufacturing Process
Not applicable.

5 Rules and Regulations

5.1 Legal Regulations. All materials must satisfy applicable laws, rules, regulations and recommendations valid
in the country of usage.
5.2 Language. In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall
take precedence.
5.3 Inspection and Rejection. Samples of components or materials released to a GM material specification
shall be tested for conformity with the requirements of this material specification and approved by the responsible
Engineering department prior to commencement of delivery of bulk supplies.
A new approval must be received for any changes, e.g., properties, manufacturing process, location of
manufacture, etc. If not otherwise agreed, all testing and documentation normally required for initial release must
be completed.
It is the responsibility of the supplier to inform the customer in a timely manner, without solicitation, and to include
documentation of all modifications of materials and/or processes and to apply for a new release.

5.4 Material Safety Data Sheets/Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS). For new product submissions, or when a
change in chemical composition of an existing product has occurred, a complete copy of the Material Safety
Data Sheet/Safety Data Sheet must be submitted in compliance with the Globally Harmonized System of
Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) requirements or other country-specific MSDS/SDS
requirements. In addition, product MSDS/SDS submissions must be in compliance with specific country General
Motors TMC003 Material Safety Data Sheet/Safety Data Sheet guidance documents where available.
5.5 All materials supplied to this standard must comply with the requirements of GMW3059, Restricted and
Reportable Substances for Parts.

6 Approved Sources
Materials supplied to this specification must be approved by General Motors.
The appropriate GM Materials Engineering Department (Product Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering)
must confirm materials as meeting the requirements of this specification. Only materials/sources listed in the GM
Materials File (MATSPC) and color approvals listed in the Appearance Database (Blue Sky) under this standard
number have been qualified by Engineering as meeting the requirements of this standard.
Paint supplier must submit proper bake charts for all MATSPC approvals.
