Sprinkler System Working Plans

NFPA 13 (2010) 22.1.3 Working plans shall be drawn to an indicated scale, on sheets of uniform size, with a plan of each
floor, and shall show those items from the following list that pertain to the design of the system:
General
Name of owner and occupant
Location, including street address
Point of compass
Floor Plans
Full height cross section, including structural
member information and ceiling construction
Location of partitions
Location of fire walls
Occupancy class of each area or room
Location and size of concealed spaces
Any small enclosures in which no sprinklers are to be
installed
Sprinklers
Make, type, model, and nominal K-factor of
sprinklers
Temperature rating and location of hightemperature sprinklers
Total area protected by each system on each floor
Number of sprinklers on each riser per floor
Pipe, Fittings & Valves
Pipe type and schedule of wall thickness
Nominal pipe size and lengths of pipe (center-tocenter dimensions)
Location and size of riser nipples
Type of fittings and joints and location of all welds
and bends
Type and locations of hangers, sleeves, braces and
methods of securing sprinklers
Calculation of loads for sizing and details of sway
bracing
All control valves, check valves, drain pipes, and test
connections
Make, type, model, and size of alarm valve
Kind and location of alarm bells

Size and location of standpipe risers, hose outlets,


hand hose and related equipment
Water Supplies
Sources of water supply, with pressure or elevation.
Private fire service main sizes, lengths, locations,
weights and materials; the sizes, types and locations
of valves, valve indicators, regulators, meters, and
valve pits; and the depth that the top of the pipe is
laid below grade
Piping provisions for flushing
Hydraulics
The information on the hydraulic data nameplate
A graphic representation of the scale on all plans
Hydraulic reference points shown on the plan that
correspond with comparable reference points on the
hydraulic calculation sheets
The minimum rate of water application (density or
flow or discharge pressure), the design area of water
application, in-rack sprinkler demand, and the water
required for hose streams both inside and outside
Total quantity of water and the pressure required
noted at a common reference point for each system
Relative elevations of sprinklers, junction points, and
supply or reference points
Fire Department Connections & Hydrants
Size and location of hydrants, showing size and
number of outlets and if outlets are to be equipped
with independent gate valves. Indicate whether hose
houses and equipment are to be provided, and by
whom.

NFPA 13 (2010) 22.3.1 Hydraulic calculations shall be prepared on form sheets that include a summary sheet, detailed
worksheets, and a graph sheet.

NFPA 14 (2010) 8.1 Plans accurately showing the details and arrangement of the standpipe system shall be furnished
before installation of the system.
Plans and Specifications
Plans shall be clear, legible, and drawn to scale.
Show the location, arrangement, water supply,
equipment, and all other details necessary to
establish compliance with the standard
Include specifications covering the character of
materials used and shall describe all system

Include an elevation diagram and the vertical

Water Supply Tanks


NFPA 22 (2008) 4.5.2.1 Complete information regarding the tank piping on the tank side of the connection to the yard or
sprinkler system shall be submitted for approval. The information submitted shall include the following:
Size and arrangement of all pipes
Size, location, and type of all valves, and other
accessories
Structural drawings and calculations
Seismic bracing details and calculations

Operational settings and sequence of operation


Monitoring equipment and connections
Underground details including foundations,
compaction, and backfill details and calculations
Buoyancy calculations for buried tanks

Fire Pump System Working Plans


NFPA 20 (2010) 4.2.3 A complete plan and detailed data describing pump, driver, controller, power supply, ttings,
suction and discharge connections, and liquid supply conditions shall be prepared for approval.
Indicate the following information:

1. A complete bill of material should be provided. Include the make, model, and part numbers of all components.
2. For all electrically operated pumps, provide an electrical schematic drawing that depicts which components are
proposed for the power supply from the utility connection to the pump motor controller.
3. Ratings of all equipment and components and settings of breakers, fuses, switches, and transformers should be
indicated. Size and length of all circuit conductors should also be noted.

Private Fire Service Mains


NFPA 24 (2010) 4.1.3 Working plans shall be drawn to an indicated scale on sheets of uniform size, with a plan of each
oor as applicable, and shall include the following items that pertain to the design of the system:

Name of owner
Location, including street address
Point of compass
A graphic representation of the scale used on all
plans
Name and address of contractor
Size and location of all water supplies
Size and location of standpipe risers, hose outlets,

NFPA 72 (2010) 10.18.1.2 Complete information shall be submitted for approval including:

A.10.18.1.2 Shop drawings should include, to an extent commensurate with the extent of the work
being performed, floor plan drawings, riser diagrams, control panel wiring diagrams, point-to-point
wiring diagrams, conduit, conductor routing, typical wiring diagrams, and other information as described
herein. All shop drawings should be drawn on sheets of uniform size and should include the following
information:
