MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos will celebrate once again the National Language Month ('Buwan

ng Wika' or 'Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa') this August 2016.

The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) will lead this year's celebration with the theme Filipino:
Wika ng Karunungan (Filipino: Language of Wisdom). The celebration highlights linguistic and
cultural activities all over the country.

he month-long celebration will kick-off through a flag-raising activity on August 1.

On August 3-5, there will be a National Congress for Filipino Intellectualization
(Pambansang Kongreso sa Intelektuwalisasyon ng Filipino) at Teachers Camp, Baguio
City.
On August 8, there will be an essay writing contest (timpalak sa pagsulat ng pormal na
sanaysay) to be held in Mindanao State University.
The 'SAYARANAO-Quiz Bowl Lektura sa Teknikal na Pagsasalin at Pagbuo ng
Glosaryo' (Lectures in Technical Translation and Glossary Development) is set on
August 12.

The annual 'Buwan ng Wika' is pursuant to Proclamation 1041, signed by former
President Fidel V. Ramos, which declares the national celebration of the National
Language Month every August. Additionally, former President Manuel Quezon,
considered the Father of the National Language, was born on August 19, 1878.
In line with this, DepEd has released memo no. 24, series of 2016 to provide guidelines,
objectives and sub-themes of 'Buwan ng Wika' celebration.

The objective of the celebration are the following:

Fully-implement Presidential Proclamation No. 1041

Encourage all government agencies and private sectors to be part of programs

that raise language and civic consciousness

Show the importance of language which is better than the national development

The theme for the month is divided into four sub-themes which will serve as a guide in
the weekly activities during the month of August:
a) Filipino: Wika ng Edukasyon at Kalinangan
b) Intektuwalisadong Wikang Pambansa, Wika ng Umuunlad na Bansa
c) Pagsasalin: Susi sa pagtamo at papapalaganap ng mga kaalaman at karunungan
d) Ang Filipino ay Wika ng Saliksik
