7 As John was unsatisfied with the amount of time he took to run a distance of 2.4 km, he
embarked on a self devised training programme to improve his timing. After the first
week of training, the amount of time he took was decreased by 1 minute. After each
5
subsequent week, the amount of time to complete 2.4 km was further decreased by of
6
the reduced time achieved in the previous week’s training.

(i) Given that John took 18 minutes to run a distance of 2.4 km before he embarked
on the self devised training programme. Show that after the n th week of training,
⎡ ⎛ 5 ⎞n ⎤
his timing is 18 − 6 ⎢1 − ⎜ ⎟ ⎥ minutes, assuming he trained continuously
⎣⎢ ⎝ 6 ⎠ ⎦⎥
without any break. [2]

(ii) In order to pass his running test, John needs to achieve a timing of at most
13 minutes and 20 seconds for a distance of 2.4 km. Find the least number of
weeks of training John needs to undergo before he can pass his test. [3]

(iii) What is the best timing John can ever achieve? [1]

(iv) John claims that his training is applicable to people who are currently clocking a
timing of at most 9 minutes. Comment and justify whether this is true. [2]

8 (a) The curve C is defined by f ( x) = x + (1 − 2a ) + and a is a negative
x+a
constant.

(i) If one of the asymptotes of y = f ( x ) is the line x = 1 , state the value of

a . Find the equation of the other asymptote of y = f ( x ) . [2]

(ii) Sketch the graph of y = f ( x ) , indicating clearly the asymptotes,

stationary points and axial intercepts. [2]

(b) The following diagrams show the graphs of y =| g ( x) | and y 2 = g ( x) . The

graph y =| g ( x ) | intersects with the axes at ( 32 , 0 ) and ( 0, 32 ) .

Your sketch should show clearly the coordinates of the intersections with the
axes and the equations of asymptotes (if any).

9 Consider the curve (5x + 10)2 − ( y − 3)2 = 25.

(i) Determine the exact coordinates of any points of intersection with the axes.
[3]

(ii) Determine the equations of the asymptotes. [3]

(iii) Draw a sketch of the curve, making clear the main relevant features. [2]
