ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express the deepest appreciation to my friend, MNSNE who has the
attitude and the substance of a real supporter: he continually and convincingly conveyed
a spirit of adventure in regard to this project, and an excitement in regard to motivate.
Without his support and persistent entertaining my attitudes, would not have been
possible. I would like to thank my family, headmaster, fellow colleague, pupils and
friends for their understanding and support.

BACKGROUND
This Ultimate Guide to English Language Papers 013 & 014 Road to Triumph
Module Series, is another initiative to help our pupils and teachers alike, to prepare them
for the new UPSR English Language papers format. This e-book is a compilation of many
techniques, used and perfected over the years, to tackle some grammatical item
questions and as a guide on how to teach grammar and writing with a different approach
and methodology. Some of the techniques have been used since 2008 as part of my
Action Research project and had develop and expanded through the course of my years
of teaching. Some techniques may be unsuitable for others, but some might. Therefore, I
just hope that this e-book will benefits not only to prepare our pupils for UPSR but as part
of our teaching method and strategies as well.

SECTION A
Section A consists of 20 questions on grammar, part of speech and comprehension. Here
are few tips and techniques to answer this section.

GENERAL TIPS

Read questions carefully understand what the

questions asked and identify grammar item being
tested.

Underline keywords in the questions. Look for subject

(person/people or thing(s)) and the verbs (action or
auxiliary).

For

tenses

questions,

underline

the

timeline

(yesterday, just now, tomorrow, every day).

In this module, youll be equipped with notes on

grammatical items and exercises.

Drilling on the items, analyzing the questions and

answers given, eliminate distracters (elimination
process) are some of the tips to answer these
questions.

Always ask yourself when you answer the questions

with this question :
Why (A) is the answer? Not B (or C or D)?

If you can answer that questions, means youre able to

analyze the questions and you know the grammar rules
and function. If you cant, you need to study more!!!

CHAPTER 1
IDENTIFYING AND ANALYZING QUESTIONS
The questions will be given based on grammar items taught in the syllabus. Able
to identify the grammatical item in the questions is always a good start.
Now, try to identify these questions grammar that being tested.
Sample A

Sample B

Sample C

Got it? What type of questions the samples are? Well, there few ways to identify
the questions. First find the keywords. Then, look at the answers given. If the answer
and the distracters are verbs (action words), most probably the questions tested on
tenses.

THE FOUR STEPS

There are four steps for you to answer grammar questions correctly. And they are:

THE FOUR STEPS

Step 1 :

Read the question carefully.

Step 2 :

Identify grammar item tested in this questions

and circle the keywords.

Step 3 :

Analyze the question and answers given.

Step 4 :

Do the distracters elimination process.

Identifying and analyzing questions.

Step 1 :

Read the question carefully.

Step 2 :

Identify grammar item tested in this questions by looking at the answers

given and the question. Circle the keywords.

Step 3 :

Analyze the question and answers given.

Step 4 :

Do the distracters elimination process.

Do remember, before you answer your questions; identify the questions by following the
four steps above.

CHAPTER 2
In this chapter, I will show you how to answer Tenses questions correctly by using my
techniques. Before we proceed to the techniques, heres a simple diagraph of basic
tenses table and what technique to be used.

TENSES TIMELINE
To identify which tenses questions being asked, you must know the Tenses Timeline. By
understanding Tenses Timeline, it will enable you to identify the tenses for the questions.

THE TECHNIQUES
These are the techniques to answer grammar questions.

NOTE:
Must remember to always identify the time line by underlining the keywords of the
tenses timeline.

PRESENT TENSE

1,2 I Love You Plus S No S

This technique is one way to teach Simple Present Tense. I called it 1,2 I Love You
Plus S No S. This rhythmic grammatical expression is a technique Ive been using for
years now. This mnemonic helps the pupils to remember the rules apply when it comes
to Simple Present Tense.
This is how, I teach this technique to my pupils.
1. Memorize the key sentence / formulaic expression 1, 2 I love You, +S S or
one two I love You, plus S no S
2. Draw the formulaic expression into table below
3. Explain the rules

Example
Underline the correct answer.

Syafiq ( like , likes ) to drink coffee.

Heres how to use this technique to answer this question.

NOTE :
+S = +es, +ies (plus s applies to verbs end with h, s, y etc. ( has, does, goes etc. )

PRESENT AND PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

1,2 IYou IsAre WasWere +ING

Another technique I used to teach Tenses is 1,2 IYou IsAre WasWere +ING.
Almost identical to the technique I used to teach Simple Present Tense, but the keywords
here are I, You, Is, Are, Was and Were. If you find these keyword in the sentences, all the
following verbs must be in form of progressive ( +ing ). Although it sounds difficult for
you to memorize this formulation, but give it time and a lot of practice, eventually, you
will get it right.
This is how, I teach this technique to my pupils.
1. Memorize the key sentence / formulaic expression 1,2 IYou IsAre WasWere
+ING or alternatively [ ayu, amiwa, awe the three ladies]
2. Draw the formulaic expression into table below
3. Explain the rules
4. Identify timeline

Example
Circle the correct answer.

Mia and Amal ________ walking at the park when they saw Syafiq.
A.

is

C.

was

B.

are

D.

were

Heres how to use this technique to answer this question.

NOTE :
This technique also applies to answer and distracters in a form of action words (verb).
Example
Circle the correct answer.

Syafiq was _____________ to school yesterday.

A.

cycle

C.

cycling

B.

cycles

D.

cycled

Here another example to identify correct tenses questions answer.

FUTURE TENSE

I We Will Shall, We All (I 2WS WA)

Theres nothing tricky about Simple Future Tense questions. All you have to do is
to identify the keywords which are will, shall, tomorrow, net week, next month etc. But to
make it easier, these are the steps to use this technique.
This is how, I teach this technique to my pupils.
1. Memorize the key sentence / formulaic expression I We Will Shall, We All
2. Draw the formulaic expression into table below
3. Explain the rules
4. Identify timeline (keywords; next, tomorrow etc.)

Example

Syafiq ( will / shall ) paint the wall tomorrow.

Heres how to use this technique to answer this question.

NOTE:

1.

I shall cook the lobster tonight.

2.

She will be cooking the lobster tonight.

3.

We will be going to cook the lobster tonight.

Lets recap.

CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 1
READING COMPREHENSION FROM LINEAR AND NON LINEAR TEXT
Its quite hard if you dont understand what you read. But dont give up yet. Read
the story sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph and guess what is the story is
about. On the other hand, non-linear text such as advertisements, posters and notices,
are more straight forward since less words (compact and precise) and pictures as
guidance or additional info.
Drilling on the items, read and understand the questions and making inference,
getting the main idea are some tips to answer these subjective questions.

Here are my tips to answer the subjective questions.

Tips
Step 1 :

Read the question (passage/text/non-linear presentation) carefully.

Step 2 :

Identify main idea / what the text is about.

Step 3 :

Read the questions, understand what the question wants.

Step 4 :

Use RAGE technique.

RAGE TECHNIQUE

Here is step by step on how to answer comprehension questions.

SAMPLE 1

SAMPLE 2

SAMPLE 3

Here is another structured way to teach weaker pupils to answer subjective

questions. One of the questions in the Penataran UPSR 2016 sample set, asking pupils to
give their opinion on the action of the characters.

(e) Ramli and his wife emptied the box of worms onto Ujangs head. Was the action correct? Why?
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________

So these are few words / phrases for you to answer the question.
STATEMENT:
Ramli and his wife emptied the box of worms onto Ujangs head.
QUESTION 1:
Was the action correct?
SUGGESTED ANSWER:
What Ramli and his wife did was wrong.
QUESTION 2:
Why?
SUGGESTED ANSWER:
It is because ______________________________________________

the action does not show

Bravery
Enthusiasm

Kind-heartedness
Honesty

Love and Affection

Loyalty
Peace-Loving
Perseverance
Sacrificing for Other
Self-Confidence
Sincerity
Strong Belief

COMPLETE ANSWER:
Ramli and his wife emptied the box of worms onto Ujangs head. Was the action correct?
Why?
What Ramli and his wife did was wrong. It is because the action does not show
kind-heartedness, love and effection to his friend.

On the contrary, these words (moral values) can be use to describe positive actions too.
The keyword here lies in the first few words of your answer. Instead of having to
memorize different kind of adjectives or morals, use these words instead.
This is an example of positive opinion(s) on an action.

(e) Syafiq Elias helped the old man to cross the road even though he was late for school. Was it the
right the to do? Why?

SECTION B
For this section, you have to write your opinions, review, suggestions, ideas or
comments in a form of letters, e-mails, notices etc. For this section, words / phrases /
picture clues has been given for you to help with your writings. You just have to expand
your ideas and put in your own ideas and suggestions.
Remember to read the questions carefully and used words in bold as your guide
to write. For instance, take a look at the question from Penataran UPSR BI 2016.
Your friend from Australia would like to visit some places of interest in
Kuala Lumpur in December. He wants to know more about the city. Write
an e-mail to your friend telling him about at least three places he can visit
on the KL City Tour bus. Write your answer between 50 to 80 words.
So, all you have to do is to suggest three places from the maps. In this case, you
have to write an-email to the respondent. Make sure read carefully the questions and
identify the gender of your friend. If you read the Bahasa Melayu instruction, the word is
rakan anda and there is no way for you to know your friends gender. But the English
instruction, clearly stated he wants to..., so you know your respondent is a male. Here
is some ideas on what and how to write.
1. Write a brief introduction.
E-mails/Letter:
Dear David Wilson,
Hi, how are you doing? I hope youre doing just fine. I am glad that youre coming to visit
Malaysia in December. Let me tell you some of the interesting places you could visit on the
KL City Tour bus. First, ...
2. Use sequence words:

first

second

next

then

finally

3. These are sentence starter you can use to start your sentence:

4. Unlike previous format, there were many suggested reasons and sentence
patterns to help you to write your answer (opinions) for question Section B(2).
Based on Penataran sample question, I believe that, the stimulus / non-linear text
will provide you with the ideas and it is a matter of how you put the ideas into your
own words.

SECTION C
Section C consists of 2 questions of narrative writing and you have to choose one
between the two questions. One is open / close ended and the other one is open ended
essay based on picture series.

GENERAL TIPS

Read the instructions carefully.

Underline the

important points.

Look and study the picture given. Read the words

given.

Identify main idea of the story based on the helping

words.

Recognise as many words that you know and cross

out the words that you dont understand and never
use the words!

Start drafting your story based on the story prompt.

Write variation of sentences - simple, compound and

complex sentences.

Remember! Your task is to write grammatically

correct sentences.

Dont forget to check your grammar, spelling and

punctuation.

Remember that you have to write 80 to 100 words

story / essay. Do word counts and write the number
of words.

GENERAL WRITING TIPS

As a teacher, I would like to see my pupils to write on their own without any
restrictions and dos and donts. I rather to see them express their own thoughts and ideas
without being too limited to techniques and what I called carbon copy sentences i.e.
S+V+O, S+V+O and repeatedly the same structures over and over. But then again, we
have to be realistic when it comes to our pupils.
For this section, narrative writings, using mind map is one of the best tools to
brainstorm and generate ideas. With the help of WH-Questions, pupils might come up
with excellent story line.
QUESTION 1
Sample question 1 for Section C

saw
fire
neighbours house
called
fire station
fire brigade
arrived
put out
safe

Step by Step to Narrative Writing

1. Look at the picture and get general idea of the picture / event / incident.
2. Use the BME chart to organize your ideas.
3. Brainstorm ideas using WH-Questions mind map.
4. Publish your story.
STEP 1
The story is about
STEP 2
How do you want the story to be

Or traditionally, you can use the TSVROS table like this;

Keywords for time :

QUESTION 2
You can use the same technique as question 1, but you can skip STEP 2 because it
has already done for you. Each picture series have already layout the beginning, the
middle and the end of the story which is easier for weaker pupils.

This is another technique you can use to teach your pupils narrative writing, which I
called the Linking technique.

THE LINKING TECHNIQUE APPROACH

What is Linking Technique approach?
Linking technique approach is where the pupils are to write other corresponding
sentences to the sentence they wrote before. Here, the use of WH-Questions tag plays
important role to brainstorm and generate ideas of what to write. Pupils are also not
bound to the only words given to help them write. However, this technique is used solely
to help pupils to write something if they are short on ideas.
What is Linking Technique?
Linking technique acquires few step or method. First, they have to group the words given
in each picture into smaller group. Then, they write simple sentence based on one
smaller group words. From there, pupils will circle words that they can elaborate on
using WH-Questions tag. Same process goes to the new sentence.
Sample writing using linking technique approach.
Step by step using linking technique.
Example:
Step 1 :

Group words into smaller group.

Step 2 :

Write sentences from the smaller group words

(kitchen bake cake)

Shiela is in the kitchen and wants to bake a cake.

Step 3 :

From the sentence, circle word you want to elaborate

Shiela is in the kitchen and wants to bake a cake.

lemon

favourite

what

why

Brainstorm
using WHquestions
tag

cake

She is going to bake a lemon cake. It is her favourite cake to bake.

From the first sentence of the smaller group fragments, you have already written 3
sentences.

Shiela is in the kitchen and wants to bake a cake. She is going to bake a lemon cake. It is her
favourite cake to bake.

Last but not least, you need to check for your spelling and grammar.

Grammar Check :

1. Make sure you essay is either in Simple Present and Present Continuous or
Simple Past and Past Continuous Tense.

2. Simple present tense ( +s, +ies, +es ) use 1, 2 I love You +S S Technique
and present continuous tense using is and are follow by ing.
3. For simple past tense, circle the verbs and add +d, +ed, +ied or totally
change (caught, went, brought) or not change the verbs (put, cut, read).
4. Past continuous tense, find the is and are and change to was and were.

I hope these help!
