WCDMA RAN
Control Channel Interference Cancellation Feature Parameter
Description

2 Overview

Overview

2.1 Background
With the popularization of intelligent terminals, the number of online UEs is continuously
increasing. Therefore, uplink control channels, including DPCCH, HS-DPCCH, and E-DPCCH,
occupy a large amount of rise over thermal (ROT) resources, causing significant interference
on other uplink channels and affecting uplink system capacity. Huawei introduces the control
channel interference cancellation feature to reduce this type of interference and at the same time
improve uplink system capacity.

2.2 Introduction
l

Control Channel Parallel Interference Cancellation (CCPIC)

CCPIC cancels interference from the DPCCH, thereby reducing the interference from this
DPCCH on other channels.

CCPIC (Phase 2)
As an enhancement to CCPIC, CCPIC (Phase 2) improves CCPIC efficiency and extends
the range in which CCPIC can take effect.

CCPIC (Phase 3)
The Control Channel Parallel Interference Cancellation (Phase 3) feature is developed from
the CCPIC (Phase 2) feature. In addition to cancellation of the interference caused by the
DPCCH, this feature introduces regeneration and cancellation of interference caused by
the HS-DPCCH and E-DPCCH.

2.3 Benefits
When uplink Uu resources of a cell are insufficient, control channel interference cancellation
provides the following benefits:
l

Increased number of uplink UEs in connected mode supported by the cell

Improved uplink throughput of the cell

3 Technical Description

Technical Description

3.1 WRFD-010210 Control Channel Parallel Interference

Cancellation (CCPIC)
CCPIC is implemented as follows:
1.

The NodeB detection module demodulates and decodes received DPCCH signals.

2.

The NodeB regeneration module regenerates UE signals on their respective DPCCHs by

using information such as the detection result and the channel estimation result.

3.

The NodeB cancellation module performs cancellation on the regenerated DPCCH signals
by removing the regenerated DPCCH signals from all UEs carried on the same CCPICcapable board from the total received signals.

After the interference from the DPCCH is canceled, the DPDCH and E-DPDCH are
demodulated. This reduces the interference from the DPCCH on other channels, thereby
improving demodulation performance of the other channels.
CCPIC only supports intra-board IC.

3.2 WRFD-140202 Control Channel Parallel Interference

Cancellation (Phase 2)
CCPIC (Phase 2) introduces the advanced regeneration cancellation algorithm, which makes
DPCCH regeneration more accurate and as a result improves CCPIC efficiency.
In addition, this feature allows inter-board IC. The regenerated DPCCH signals of all UEs carried
on all CCPIC-capable boards, rather than a single board, are removed from the total received
signals. After the interference from the DPCCH is canceled, the DPDCH and E-DPDCH are
demodulated. When multiple baseband boards form an uplink resource group, the CCPIC gains
for the UEs carried on one board benefit the UEs carried on other boards.

3 Technical Description

3.3 WRFD-160201 Control Channel Parallel Interference

Cancellation (Phase 3)
In addition to interference regeneration and cancellation of the DPCCH, which are supported
by CCPIC (Phase 2), CCPIC (Phase 3) also supports interference regeneration and cancellation
of the HS-DPCCH and E-DPCCH, therefore increasing the gains in cancellation of control
channel interference. The technical principles of CCPIC (Phase 3) are as follows:
1.

The detection module demodulates and decodes the received HS-DPCCH/E-DPCCH

signals.

2.

The regeneration module regenerates UE signals on their respective HS-DPCCH/EDPCCH by using information such as the demodulation, decoding, and channel estimation
results.

3.

The cancellation module removes the regenerated HS-DPCCH/E-DPCCH UE signals from

the total signals received before the demodulation and decoding.

4.

The demodulation module demodulates the DPDCH/E-DPDCH signals according to the

cancellation results to reduce the interference caused by the HS-DPCCH/E-DPCCH to the
DPDCH/E-DPDCH and therefore improve the demodulation performance.

offset for HSUPA and HSUPA Adaptive Retransmission decrease. Likewise, when
Adaptive Configuration of Traffic Channel Power offset for HSUPA or HSUPA Adaptive
Retransmission is enabled, gains from CCPIC decrease. This is because CCPIC increases
system capacity by canceling interference from the DPCCH while Adaptive Configuration
of Traffic Channel Power offset for HSUPA and HSUPA Adaptive Retransmission reduces
the DPCCH power and therefore leaves less interference from the DPCCH to be canceled.

HSUPA, see Power Control Feature Parameter Description.

WRFD-010641 HSUPA Adaptive Retransmission

System throughput is always greater when CCPIC is enabled together with Adaptive
Configuration of Traffic Channel Power offset for HSUPA or HSUPA Adaptive
Retransmission, as compared with when CCPIC is not enabled together with Adaptive
Configuration of Traffic Channel Power offset for HSUPA or HSUPA Adaptive

Description

5 Network Impact

Network Impact

5.1 WRFD-010210 Control Channel Parallel Interference

Cancellation (CCPIC)
System Capacity
CCPIC noticeably increases the uplink cell capacity and enables CCPIC-capable UEs to benefit
from each other when the uplink DPCCH uses a large proportion of RTWP in a cell (for example,
when a large number of UEs camp on the cell but the uplink throughput is low) and a small
number of boards are configured in the uplink resource group that serves the cell.
CCPIC increases the uplink cell capacity for macro cells in urban areas that are configured with
the TU3 channel and serves only AMR 12.2 kbit/s UEs in the uplink.
l

If the uplink Uu-interface load threshold for the cell is 50%, the uplink cell capacity
increases by 11%.

If the threshold is 75%, the uplink cell capacity increases by 18%.

Network Performance
None

5.2 WRFD-140202 Control Channel Parallel Interference

Cancellation (Phase 2)
System Capacity
CCPIC (Phase 2) significantly increases the uplink system capacity by improving CCPIC
efficiency and extending the range in which CCPIC can take effect. CCPIC (Phase 2) can
increase the uplink system capacity by up to 20% when the uplink DPCCH uses a large
proportion of RTWP in a cell, for example, when the uplink throughput is low but a large number
of UEs camp on the cell. Gains provided by CCPIC (Phase 2) decrease if the uplink DPCCH
uses a smaller proportion of RTWP.

WCDMA RAN
Control Channel Interference Cancellation Feature Parameter
Description

5 Network Impact

Network Performance
You are advised to replace the WBBPa or WBBPb board with a WBBPd, WBBPf, UBBPd board
to maximize the gains provided by CCPIC (Phase 2). The reason is as follows:
Assume that a WBBPa or WBBPb board and a WBBPd, WBBPf, UBBPd board form an uplink
resource group. To ensure that a WBBPa or WBBPb board can benefit from CCPIC gains
provided by a WBBPd, WBBPf, UBBPd board, the INTERBOARDICSW parameter can be set
to FULL_IC. To improve the air interface capacity, the INTERBOARDICSW parameter should
be set to FULL_IC. However, UEs whose data channels are carried on the WBBPa or WBBPb
board must set up DPCCHs on the WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd board for power control
purposes. In addition, UEs whose downlink services are carried on HSDPA channels must set
up another HS-DPCCH on the WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd board. The new channels consume
extra resources, which reduces the total number of users supported by the system and decreases
the access success rate. Therefore, to fully benefit from the inter-board IC gains provided CCPIC
(Phase 2), the WBBPa or WBBPb board should be replaced by a WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd
board.
If the WBBPa or WBBPb board cannot be replaced, set the INTERBOARDICSW parameter to
PART_IC.

5.3 WRFD-160201 Control Channel Parallel Interference

Cancellation (Phase 3)
System Capacity
Compared with CCPIC (Phase 2), CCPIC (Phase 3) also supports interference regeneration and
cancellation of the HS-DPCCH and E-DPCCH in addition to the DPCCH, thereby improving
uplink system capacity. Gains become more noticeable as the load on the HS-DPCCH and EDPCCH increases.
When all baseband processing units in the base station are UBBPd boards, CCPIC (Phase 3)
provides the following gains compared with CCPIC (Phase 2):
l

In a cell that has 8 to 12 full-buffer UEs (UEs transmitting data continuously), the uplink
cell throughput increases by 5% to 25%. If CCPIC was not enabled in the cell, the uplink
cell throughput increases by 10% to 35% after CCPIC (Phase 3) is enabled.

In a cell that has 2 full-buffer UEs and 20 to 30 burst UEs (UEs transmitting data abruptly
in a rather short period of time), the uplink cell throughput increases by 10% to 30%. If
CCPIC was not enabled in the cell, the uplink cell throughput increases by 20% to 40%
after CCPIC (Phase 3) is enabled.

In a cell where there are only burst UEs and the load is heavy (RoT > Target RoT 2), the
maximum number of connections increases by 5% to 20%. If CCPIC was not enabled in
the cell, the uplink cell throughput increases by 10% to 40% after CCPIC (Phase 3) is
enabled.

Only the UBBPd boards support CCPIC (Phase 3). Therefore, when the UBBPd boards are used
together with other boards, the gains of CCPIC (Phase 3) compared with CCPIC (Phase 2) will
decrease.

6.1 WRFD-010210 Control Channel Parallel Interference

Cancellation (CCPIC)
6.1.1 When to Use Control Channel Parallel Interference
Cancellation (CCPIC)
Use CCPIC when the following conditions are met:
l

The uplink system capacity needs to be expanded.

The uplink DPCCH uses a large proportion of RTWP in the target cell.

UE distribution is unbalanced among boards.

The uplink Uu-interface load is high in the target cell when,

for example, the following inequality is true:
VS.MeanRTWP > BackgroundNoise + Target load - 2 dB, where Target load = 10 x
LOG10 (1/(1 - MaxTargetUlLoadFactor(BSC6900,BSC6910)))

A large number of UEs camp on the target cell when,

for example, the following inequality is true:
VS.CellDCHUEs > 12

Only a small number of boards are configured in the uplink resource group. For example,
only one CCPIC-capable board is configured in the group.
NOTE

It is recommended that the gain of this feature be evaluated in networks with contiguous coverage to avoid
the impact of data volume fluctuation on the feature gain.

If there are a large number of UEs and the uplink load is heavy in a cell, this feature can improve
HSUPA throughput and reduce uplink load of the cell. After the feature is activated in a cell
where the traffic model remains the same, for example, the values of the VS.CellDCHUEs,
VS.HSUPA.UE.Mean.TTI2ms, and VS.HSUPA.UE.Mean.TTI10ms counters remain the same,
the HSUPA throughput is expected to increase and the uplink load is expected to decrease.

Uplink System Capacity

CCPIC can increase the uplink capacity for a cell when the cell load is high. The uplink cell
capacity can be monitored by the average number of online UEs in the cell or the uplink cell
throughput as follows:
l

Cell-level capacity gain

Compare the values of the VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMorX and
VS.HSUPA.DataTtiNum.ROTMorX counters before and after feature activation to
evaluate the feature gain in uplink throughput. After CCPIC is enabled, the values of
VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMorX and VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMorX/
VS.HSUPA.DataTtiNum.ROTMorX are expected to increase. X equals the result of 10 x
LOG10(1/(1-MaxTargetUlLoadFactor(BSC6900,BSC6910))), which is 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13,
20, or ALL.
If the power-based admission control algorithm is enabled, observe the value of the
VS.CellDCHUEs counter before and after feature activation to determine the feature gain
in cell uplink user number. The power-based admission control algorithm is enabled when
the NBMUlCacAlgoSelSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter is set to
ALGORITHM_FIRST, ALGORITHM_THIRD, or ALGORITHM_FOURTH.

RNC- or cluster-level capacity gain

Use the VS.CellDCHUEs vs VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput.TotalBytes or
VS.CellDCHUEs vs VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput to determine the overall gains in
throughput. That is, create a scatter diagram by using the value of VS.CellDCHUEs as the
horizontal coordinate and the value of VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput.TotalBytes or
VS.HSUPA.MeanChThroughput as the vertical coordinate to determine the throughput
gain with the user number unchanged.

The uplink system capacity needs to be expanded.

The uplink DPCCH uses a large proportion of RTWP in the target cell.

The uplink Uu-interface load is high in the target cell when,

for example, the following inequality is true:

6.2.3 Deployment
Requirements
l

Dependencies on Hardware
The 3900 series base stations support this feature and must be configured with the WBBPd,
WBBPf, or UBBPd board.
To support inter-board IC in a BBU3900, at least one WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd
board must be configured in slot 2 or 3 as a centralized IC board.
To support inter-board IC in a BBU3910, a UBBPd board can be configured in any slot
as a centralized IC board.
This feature is supported by the BTS3803E and is recommended for the BTS3803E.
However, the BTS3803E is an integrated base station and therefore does not support interboard IC gains. Hence, the BTS3803E cannot obtain as many gains from CCPIC (Phase 2)
as 3900 series base stations do.
The DBS3800, BTS3812E, BTS3812A, BTS3812AE, and BTS3902E do not support this
feature.

Activation Observation
Check whether CCPIC (Phase 2) has been activated using the RNC or NodeB LMT. If the base
station is configured with the RRU3801C, the following verification modes do not apply.
NOTE

Observe the activation effect only when there are a large number of UEs because CCPIC (Phase 2) gains
are obvious only in this scenario.

Using the RNC LMT:

1.

On the RNC LMT, click Monitor, choose Cell Performance Monitoring > RTWP, enter
the cell ID, and click Submit.

2.

Check whether a valid value is displayed for Cell measured RTWP After First Stage
Interference Cancellation.
Expected result:
A valid value is displayed, indicating that the CCPIC (Phase 2) feature is functioning
properly. When there are a large number of UEs, Cell measured RTWP After First Stage
Interference Cancellation is smaller than Cell Measured RTWP. The RTWP decrease
further indicates that this feature has been activated. Figure 6-2 shows the RTWP
monitoring result displayed on the RNC LMT.

Uplink System Capacity

CCPIC (Phase 2) can increase the uplink capacity of a cell when the uplink cell load is heavy.
The uplink cell capacity can be monitored by the average number of online UEs in the cell or
the uplink cell throughput as described in the following:

VS.CellDCHUEs counter before and after feature activation to determine the feature gain
in cell uplink user number. The power-based admission control algorithm is enabled when
the NBMUlCacAlgoSelSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter is set to

6.3.4 Performance Monitoring

CCPIC (Phase 3) performance can be monitored by the IC efficiency, uplink system capacity,
and uplink load. The three items are measured by the counters listed in the following table:
Counter Name

Description

VS.CellDCHUEs

Number of UEs in CELL_DCH State for Cell

VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMorX

Cell Throughput of HSUPA Users Under Different Uu

Interface Loads (X=3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, or 20, or ALL)

VS.HSUPA.DataTtiNum.ROTMorX

Number of TTIs in which HSUPA Users Have Data to

Transmit Under Different Uu Interface Loads in a Cell
(X=3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 20)

VS.HSUPA.DataTtiNum

Number of TTIs in which HSUPA users transmit data in

a cell

VS.FirstStageIcEff.Mean

Average Value of First-Stage IC Efficiency

VS.FirstStageIcEff.Max

Maximum Value of First-Stage IC Efficiency

VS.HSUPA.LoadOutput.X

Number of Times That Cell Uu-lnterface Load Is Between

Ydb to Zdb (Ratio of the Actual RTWP in a Cell to the
Reference RTWP) (X=0~25)

If there are a large number of UEs and the uplink load is heavy in a cell, this feature can improve
HSUPA throughput and reduce uplink load of the cell. After the feature is activated in a cell
where the traffic model remains the same, for example, the values of the VS.CellDCHUEs,
VS.HSDPA.UE.Mean.Cell, VS.HSUPA.UE.Mean.TTI2ms, and
VS.HSUPA.UE.Mean.TTI10ms counters remain the same, the HSUPA throughput is expected
to increase and the uplink load is expected to decrease.

IC Efficiency
If CCPIC (Phase 2) has not been activated before CCPIC (Phase 3), the values of the
VS.FirstStageIcEff.Mean and VS.FirstStageIcEff.Max counters are not 0 after CCPIC (Phase

3) is activated. If CCPIC (Phase 2) has been activated before CCPIC (Phase 3), the values of the
counters increase after CCPIC (Phase 3) is activated.
NOTE

The efficiency of stage 1 IC is calculated using the following formula: Efficiency of stage 1 IC = (RTWP
measured before IC RTWP measured after first-stage IC)/RTWP measured before IC

Uplink System Capacity

When the uplink load is restricted and there are multiple HSUPA UEs, this feature improves the
cell uplink HSUPA throughput or increases the average number of online uses as follows:
l

Cell-level capacity gain

Compare the values of the VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMorX and
VS.HSUPA.DataTtiNum.ROTMorX counters before and after feature activation to
evaluate the feature gain in uplink throughput. After CCPIC (Phase 3) is enabled, the values
of VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMorX and VS.HSUPA.Thruput.ROTMorX/
VS.HSUPA.DataTtiNum.ROTMorX are expected to increase. X equals the result of 10 x
LOG10(1/(1-MaxTargetUlLoadFactor)), which is 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 20, or ALL.
If the power-based admission control algorithm is enabled, observe the value of the
VS.CellDCHUEs counter before and after feature activation to determine the feature gain
in cell uplink user number. The power-based admission control algorithm is enabled when
the NBMUlCacAlgoSelSwitch parameter is set to ALGORITHM_FIRST,
ALGORITHM_THIRD, or ALGORITHM_FOURTH.

Uplink RTWP
If the uplink cell capacity remains unchanged, CCPIC (Phase 3) helps improve the uplink load
performance of cells as follows:
l

Cell-level load performance gain

Compare the value of the VS.HSUPA.LoadOutput.X counter before and after feature
activation to evaluate the feature gain in uplink load. After CCPIC (Phase 3) is enabled,
the changes in the value of this counter indicate that more uplink load values are distributed
in small-value ranges.

RNC- or cluster-level load performance gain

Use the VS.CellDCHUEs vs VS.MeanRTWP to determine the overall RTWP gain. That
is, create a scatter diagram by using the value of VS.CellDCHUEs as the horizontal
coordinate and the value of VS.MeanRTWP as the vertical coordinate to determine the
RTWP gain with the user number unchanged.

For examples of gain analysis, see section 6.2.4 Performance Monitoring.
