Control Channel Interference Cancellation Feature Parameter
Description
2 Overview
Overview
2.1 Background
With the popularization of intelligent terminals, the number of online UEs is continuously
increasing. Therefore, uplink control channels, including DPCCH, HS-DPCCH, and E-DPCCH,
occupy a large amount of rise over thermal (ROT) resources, causing significant interference
on other uplink channels and affecting uplink system capacity. Huawei introduces the control
channel interference cancellation feature to reduce this type of interference and at the same time
improve uplink system capacity.
2.2 Introduction
l
CCPIC (Phase 2)
As an enhancement to CCPIC, CCPIC (Phase 2) improves CCPIC efficiency and extends
the range in which CCPIC can take effect.
CCPIC (Phase 3)
The Control Channel Parallel Interference Cancellation (Phase 3) feature is developed from
the CCPIC (Phase 2) feature. In addition to cancellation of the interference caused by the
DPCCH, this feature introduces regeneration and cancellation of interference caused by
the HS-DPCCH and E-DPCCH.
2.3 Benefits
When uplink Uu resources of a cell are insufficient, control channel interference cancellation
provides the following benefits:

Technical Description
The NodeB detection module demodulates and decodes received DPCCH signals.
2.
3.
The NodeB cancellation module performs cancellation on the regenerated DPCCH signals
by removing the regenerated DPCCH signals from all UEs carried on the same CCPICcapable board from the total received signals.
After the interference from the DPCCH is canceled, the DPDCH and E-DPDCH are
demodulated. This reduces the interference from the DPCCH on other channels, thereby
improving demodulation performance of the other channels.
CCPIC only supports intra-board IC.

WRFD-160202 Flexible Power Control for Uplink Low Data Rate Transmission
When CCPIC is enabled, gains from Flexible Power Control for Uplink Low Data Rate
Transmission decrease. Likewise, gains from CCPIC decrease when Flexible Power
Control for Uplink Low Data Rate Transmission is enabled.
This is because CCPIC increases system capacity by canceling interference from the
DPCCH while Flexible Power Control for Uplink Low Data Rate Transmission reduces
the DPCCH power and therefore leaves less interference from the DPCCH to be canceled.
System throughput is always greater when CCPIC is enabled together with Flexible Power
Control for Uplink Low Data Rate Transmission, as compared with when CCPIC is not
enabled together with Flexible Power Control for Uplink Low Data Rate Transmission, or
when neither of the features is enabled.

When Dynamic Configuration of HSDPA CQI Feedback Period is enabled, gains from
CCPIC (Phase 3) compared with CCPIC (Phase 2) decrease.
This is because CCPIC (Phase 3) increases system capacity by canceling interference from
the HS-DPCCH and E-DPCCH while Dynamic Configuration of HSDPA CQI Feedback
Period reduces the HS-DPCCH power and therefore leaves less interference from the HSDPCCH to be canceled. The system throughput produced when CCPIC (Phase 3) and
Dynamic Configuration of HSDPA CQI Feedback Period are both enabled is greater than
that produced when they are not both enabled.

You are advised to replace the WBBPa or WBBPb board with a WBBPd, WBBPf, UBBPd board
to maximize the gains provided by CCPIC (Phase 2). The reason is as follows:
Assume that a WBBPa or WBBPb board and a WBBPd, WBBPf, UBBPd board form an uplink
resource group. To ensure that a WBBPa or WBBPb board can benefit from CCPIC gains
provided by a WBBPd, WBBPf, UBBPd board, the INTERBOARDICSW parameter can be set
to FULL_IC. To improve the air interface capacity, the INTERBOARDICSW parameter should
be set to FULL_IC. However, UEs whose data channels are carried on the WBBPa or WBBPb
board must set up DPCCHs on the WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd board for power control
purposes. In addition, UEs whose downlink services are carried on HSDPA channels must set
up another HS-DPCCH on the WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd board. The new channels consume
extra resources, which reduces the total number of users supported by the system and decreases
the access success rate. Therefore, to fully benefit from the inter-board IC gains provided CCPIC
(Phase 2), the WBBPa or WBBPb board should be replaced by a WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd
board.
If the WBBPa or WBBPb board cannot be replaced, set the INTERBOARDICSW parameter to
PART_IC.
In a cell that has 8 to 12 full-buffer UEs (UEs transmitting data continuously), the uplink
cell throughput increases by 5% to 25%. If CCPIC was not enabled in the cell, the uplink
cell throughput increases by 10% to 35% after CCPIC (Phase 3) is enabled.
In a cell that has 2 full-buffer UEs and 20 to 30 burst UEs (UEs transmitting data abruptly
in a rather short period of time), the uplink cell throughput increases by 10% to 30%. If
CCPIC was not enabled in the cell, the uplink cell throughput increases by 20% to 40%
after CCPIC (Phase 3) is enabled.
In a cell where there are only burst UEs and the load is heavy (RoT > Target RoT 2), the
maximum number of connections increases by 5% to 20%. If CCPIC was not enabled in
the cell, the uplink cell throughput increases by 10% to 40% after CCPIC (Phase 3) is
enabled.
Only the UBBPd boards support CCPIC (Phase 3). Therefore, when the UBBPd boards are used
together with other boards, the gains of CCPIC (Phase 3) compared with CCPIC (Phase 2) will
decrease.

Dependencies on Hardware
The 3900 series base stations support this feature and must be configured with the WBBPd,
WBBPf, or UBBPd board.
To support inter-board IC in a BBU3900, at least one WBBPd, WBBPf, or UBBPd
board must be configured in slot 2 or 3 as a centralized IC board.
To support inter-board IC in a BBU3910, a UBBPd board can be configured in any slot
as a centralized IC board.
This feature is supported by the BTS3803E and is recommended for the BTS3803E.
However, the BTS3803E is an integrated base station and therefore does not support interboard IC gains. Hence, the BTS3803E cannot obtain as many gains from CCPIC (Phase 2)
as 3900 series base stations do.
The DBS3800, BTS3812E, BTS3812A, BTS3812AE, and BTS3902E do not support this
feature.

Activation Observation
Check whether CCPIC (Phase 2) has been activated using the RNC or NodeB LMT. If the base
station is configured with the RRU3801C, the following verification modes do not apply.
NOTE
Observe the activation effect only when there are a large number of UEs because CCPIC (Phase 2) gains
are obvious only in this scenario.
1.
On the RNC LMT, click Monitor, choose Cell Performance Monitoring > RTWP, enter
the cell ID, and click Submit.
2.
Check whether a valid value is displayed for Cell measured RTWP After First Stage
Interference Cancellation.
Expected result:
A valid value is displayed, indicating that the CCPIC (Phase 2) feature is functioning
properly. When there are a large number of UEs, Cell measured RTWP After First Stage
Interference Cancellation is smaller than Cell Measured RTWP. The RTWP decrease
further indicates that this feature has been activated. Figure 6-2 shows the RTWP

Hardware
Only 3900 series base stations (except the BTS3902E) support this feature. The uplink
resource group must be configured with at least one UBBPd board.
The DBS3800, BTS3812E, BTS3812A, BTS3812AE, BTS3803E, and BTS3902E do not
support this feature.

If there are a large number of UEs and the uplink load is heavy in a cell, this feature can improve
HSUPA throughput and reduce uplink load of the cell. After the feature is activated in a cell
where the traffic model remains the same, for example, the values of the VS.CellDCHUEs,
VS.HSDPA.UE.Mean.Cell, VS.HSUPA.UE.Mean.TTI2ms, and
VS.HSUPA.UE.Mean.TTI10ms counters remain the same, the HSUPA throughput is expected
to increase and the uplink load is expected to decrease.
IC Efficiency
If CCPIC (Phase 2) has not been activated before CCPIC (Phase 3), the values of the
VS.FirstStageIcEff.Mean and VS.FirstStageIcEff.Max counters are not 0 after CCPIC (Phase

3) is activated. If CCPIC (Phase 2) has been activated before CCPIC (Phase 3), the values of the
counters increase after CCPIC (Phase 3) is activated.
NOTE
The efficiency of stage 1 IC is calculated using the following formula: Efficiency of stage 1 IC = (RTWP
measured before IC RTWP measured after first-stage IC)/RTWP measured before IC
Uplink RTWP
If the uplink cell capacity remains unchanged, CCPIC (Phase 3) helps improve the uplink load
performance of cells as follows:
