All the three gunas are in me and I am not in them.
In simple terms, all the three gunas or apara prakriti is dependent on me, I am not dependent on them. Clay pot is dependent on clay for its existence; clay is not dependent on pot for its existence. Clay can exist independently. This is important to know as it gives us relative peace in relative life. For example when an actor assumes the role of beggar, he may express beggarliness properly in his role, but he does not assume the qualities of beggar. He clearly knows he is not a beggar. He does not take the properties of the role as his intrinsic properties. Beggar role is dependent on the actor but the actor is not dependent on the role. Actor can exist without any role. Here actor is Para prakriti and beggar role is apara prakriti. How does this knowledge will help me? At the relative level as an individual one has to play different roles as mother, father, husband, wife and has different duties in different roles. None of the actions should be dictated by personal likes and dislikes. At the relative level the individual Self is provided with free will as a relative expression of absolute freedom at the absolute reality level. All the actions should be done wih the conformity of right and wrong. We have the capacity to do right action and any action that transgresses universal values is a wrong action. Discretion in action is karma yoga. Doing the action in conformity with the universal harmony. In devotional language acting with the attitude of offering it to Iswara. Isvararpana Buddhi. Proper attitude in action is Karma yoga. Accepting the result of the action with a cheerful attitude (without much resentment and grumbling) as a Prasada from Iswara. At absolute level I the Self is free of any qualities and it is nitya suddha Buddha mukta svaroopa.
