Variations of Choral Speech, Using Instruments

by Adele Lowen
A variation of choral speech is to add instruments to the performance. Once
students can recite a poem, discuss with them which instruments could be used
to:
- create a sound effect at the end of a line
- substitute a word with an instrument sound
- create a sound scape, introduction, interlude, or coda for the poem
- create an ostinato to be played while the poem is being recited
- add students acting out the poem while another group of students are reciting
the poem
- make up new words to the poem
