Inmyopinion,connectingwitheachstudentdevelopsasenseofinclusion.ThefollowingscenariosareexamplesofhowIconnectwithallstudents.

1/ClassroomManagementAclassroommanagementsystemisthebeginningtoafunctioningclassroomwhereallstudentsareengagedsocially,
emotionally,physically,andacademically.
IdonothaverulesinmyclassroomIhaveexpectations.Iaskstudentswhatkindoflearningenvironmentworksbestforthem.Theycreatealist
thatisnearlyidenticaltotheschoolscodeofconductofkind,caring,andrespect.Studentsappreciatethestructuretheseexpectationscreate
aroundwhatrespectlookslike,feelslike,andsoundslike.Inaddition,theexpectationsnaturallysetupaskeletonforbehaviourinallschool
settings.Weeklyclassmeetingsaswellasdealingwithissuesonthespotreinforceexpectations.
Withintheseexpectations,aclearandfairprocessisidentifiedandagreedupontosolveproblems.Naturalconsequencesfollowwithoftenvery
littleextradisciplineotherthanlettingparentsknow.
Usingmanners,Istatements,andyournamewhenbeingaddressedareincluded.
Iusethewordexpectations,asitisapositiveterm,unlikerulesthataremeanttobebroken.

OneexampleIaddresseachyearisthecloakroom.Iaskstudentsiftheywantanassignedspotfortheyearorafirstcomefirstserveprocedure.The
result?Studentswanttobeabletopickouttheirownspotandhaveitfortheyear.Thisgivesstudentsthepowertochoose.
Asecondexampleisliningup.Studentstendtojumpthelinetojoinafriendinsteadofgoingtothebackoftheline.Italkaboutbullyingandthe
perceptionofthispersonfeelingsuperiortoeveryoneelsebygoingaheadofothers,andhowthatmakesotherstudentsfeelawful.Liningupattheback
ofthelinewithyourfriendsolvesallproblemsandmakeseveryonefeeltheyareequallyimportant.
Assigningclassroomjobsandrotatingthrougheverytwoweeksisoneothermethodoffosteringinclusion.

2/GettingtoknowyourstudentsForstudenttofeelgenuinelyincluded,theyneedtobefamiliarwiththeirsurroundings.Inaroomwith30strangers,
childrentendtowithdraw.Discoveringinterestsofeachchildandpairingstudentsbasedonsharedinterestsisveryvaluabletomaintainengagement.
Forinstance,mystudentsaregroupedtogetherinfours.Atthebeginningofthemonth,Itellthestudentstheyneedtositwithatleasttwoother
studentsoftheirchoice.Thisstrategyprovidesanopportunityforstudentstoworkwithmostoftheclass,yetkeepagoodfriendnear.
AnotherroutineisMusicalMornings.EachmorningwegreeteachotherinFrench,andIgivethem5minutestosharewhateverisontheirmind.I
circulate,joininconversations,andaskaboutfamilymembers.Inthebackground,IputonasongandcallitMusicalMornings.Oncethesongis
over,soisthetalking.Ashortsharingsessionwrapsupthemusicalmorning.WhatIlearnfromthesestudents,Iapplyasmotivatorsthroughout
theyear.
OnelastexampleIwillmentionisthejokeoftheday.Iaskstudentstobringajokeorriddletosharewiththegroupbeforesilentreading.Adding
humourtothedayisapowerfulstrategytokeepeveryonelaughing.Inaddition,studentswanttovisitthelibraryandtakeouthumorousbooks.
Theseexamplesassistwithsocialandemotionalengagement.

3/Utilizingunstructuredtimesduringrecessandorlunch,especiallyatthebeginningoftheyear,Iwillspendtimeoutsideobservingstudents.
Sometimes,Iwillengageinplay,butmygoalistoobserveandofferencouragementwhennecessary.Viewingchildrenindifferentenvironmentsisvery
helpfultounderstandthewholechild.Thestudentpopulation,notjustexceptionalchildren,alsoseesmeinadifferentroleandideally,theirperceptionof
mebecomesmorefavourable.Inmyexperiences,childrenwhoseeyouadvocatingforthemwillinreturn,trytheirbestforyou.

4/BodyLanguageNonverbalcommunicationsisanareaIhaveconsciouslydeveloped.Theuseofbodylanguageisverytellingandchildrenareable
topickuphowIfeelveryquickly.IhavehadtobecomemoreawareofhowIstand,andwhatIdowithmyhandsandeyes.Movingclosertostudents
whentheyaretalkingdemonstrateswhattheyhavetosayisimportant.Talkingtoyoungerchildren,Igetdowntotheirlevelandlookthemintheeye.
WhenImodelbodylanguagethatshowsIcarewhatisbeingsaid,therestoftheclassfollows.Modelingappropriatebodylanguageassistschildrenwith
autismandaspergerstocopymeandpracticeimprovedsocialskills.

5/Communication
Communicationtoparents,supportworkers,schoolbasedteammembers,andstudentsisconsistentandfair.
Commentingonsuccessprovidestheexceptionallearnerwithconfidenceandboostsselfesteem.
KeepingtheIEPdocumentaliveiskeytoinclusion.
Withexceptionalstudents,communicationbetweenhomeandschoolmaylookdifferentasmorethanlikelyspecificinformationwillberequired.
Listeningandapplyingwhatparentscommunicateisalsoimportant.Ultimately,praiseandfocussingonthepositiveswillmotivateanddevelop
inclusion.

Inmypractice,Istressstrongverbalcommunicationskillsthroughmanypublicspeakingactivities.

TheTalkJarStudentsgenerateatopictheyarefamiliarwithandwriteitdownonaslipofpaper.Allpaperiscollectedinajar.Twostudentsaday
selectapieceofpaperandhavetopresentaoneminutespeechtotheclassthefollowingdayontheselectedtopic.Ifthetopicselectedisonea
studentknowsnothingabout,theychoosetheirowntopic.Ihavefoundexceptionalstudentslovesharingtheirideasandreceiveplentyof
encouragementfromtheirpeers.
Iusedebatesthroughouttheyear.Eachpersonhasaroleaspartofateam.Ihavefoundexceptionalstudentsembraceteamwork.

6/ProblemSolvingWhenaproblemarises,Ihavetorememberthatthereisoftenmoretotheactionsthantheissue.Hearingbothsidesoftheissue
andidentifyingthecauseofthebehaviour,whetheritisattentionseeking,seekingpower,seekingrevenge,orbuildingselfconfidenceiskey.Revealing
theneedthatislackingforthestudentsinvolvedandattemptingtoaddressitshowscompassionandcaring.

7/ShapeoftheDayToenhanceinclusion,everychildparticipatesinsomeofthesameactivitiesthroughouttheday.
Avisualscheduleisonthechalkboardforthedayandtheweek.Specialeventsarelistedintheweeklyschedule.
Inmyroom,musicalmornings,morningannouncements,silentreading,libraryvisits,computerroomtime,drawing,art,dailyPE,chantingtimes
tablesbeforemathbegins,and5minutegamesfortheclassroomareexampleswhereeverychildisengagedinthesamelowriskactivity.

8/EvaluationIfindevaluationthequickestwaytodestroyclasscohesionandlabelstudentsfortheworst.Mypracticewithevaluationismoreabout
assessmentforlearning,notassessmentoflearning.Asateacher,providingthetoolsforeachchildtolearnandthetimetodevelopskillsarecrucialfor
inclusionofallstudents.Qualityoverquantityisimportanttoremember.
Forinstance,wecreatedatrailerwithiMovieforafantasystory.Trailerswerecomplete,butnotverywelldone.Asaclass,weviewedthemand
pointedoutwhatworkedandwhatshouldbechangedfornexttime.Ihadthemdoasecondtrailerforanygenre,andthesecondattemptwasmuch
improved.Afterthesecondattempt,thestudentsrealizedtheycouldimproveontheireffortswithsound,font,pictures,andpace.Providingtime
andsharingwhatworkswaskeytoheighteningthelevelofengagementforallstudents.Ievaluatedthedifferencebetweenthetwotrailersandhad
studentsexplaintomehowtheymadechanges.
Duringcertainlessons,Itellstudentstheyarepracticingskills,sotheirworkwillnotbeevaluatedtoday(orthisweek),butwillbenexttime.
Inmyexperience,assessmentoflearningcreatesanxietyandnegativeselftalk.Itrytoensuretestingissolelyonthematerialcoveredandthat
thepracticeworkismorechallengingthantheactualtest.

9/AcademicsTocreateagenuineinclusiveenvironmentteachersneedtolistenandunderstandtheneedsofexceptionalstudents.
IneedtoprovidewhatisrequiredforthestudenttolearnbyimplementingtheIEP.
Utilizingtheschoolteamandfamilytoassistingrowth
Ineedtoacceptdifferencesandbeflexibleenoughtochangedirectionwhennecessary.
Dependingonthestudent,lessonswillbeadaptedandormodifiedinvariouswaystoworktowardsmeetingthegoalsoftheIEP.
ApracticeIapplyisthe3beforemerule.Studentsask3peersforhelpbeforetheyaskme.
Utilizingthescaffoldingmethodofteachingshowandtell,thinkoutloud,accesspriorknowledge,providetalkingtime,preteachvocabulary,
includevisualaids,andaskquestions.
Whengroupworkisassigned,specificrolesareprovidedsoeachchildmustparticipateandcontributesomethingdifferentthantheothers.
Utilizingtechnologyhashelpedwithinclusionasallstudentsareabletoengageinameaningfulway

Overall,Ibelievetocreategenuineinclusion,achildmustbeputinapositiontosucceed,andtheirprogressfosteredbyalladults.Connectingwithall
children,notjustexceptionalones,isthekeytogenuineinclusion.

5/Evaluationconnectedtothenewcurriculumwillbeinterestingtolearn.Imhopingformorerubrics.
