WhenSorosopensthehunt,theinternationalmoneymarketsgetmovingandthereservebanksstart
worrying.

InSeptember1993hesucceededovertheBankofEngland.Hewascertainthatthebankwouldhaveto
takethepoundthatcameunderpressureoutoftheEuropeanexchangemechanismanddevalueit.He
gambledtenbillionUS$withsuccess.HemadeonebillionUS$whichtheBritishtaxpayersnowhaveto
comeupwith.Hehimselfopenlylikestobeknowsasthemanwhowantstoinfluencethebigmoney
marketsoftheworld.

Thisisaveryunusualstanceforaninvestortotake,whoshouldratherbeinterestedinusingsituations
unobservedlythatthecompetitorshavenotyetdiscovered.InMarch1993Sorosactivitiesbecame
knownwhenhepredictedariseinthepriceofgold.Itisassumedsincethisstartedabuyingspreein
preciousmetalsthatthisdrovethepriceup20%overthehighestpricesincetheGulfWar.

InthebeginningofJune1993hewroteanopenlettertothebusinesseditoroftheLondonTimes,Anatole
Kaletsky,announcingthatheintendedtourgethemoneymarketstoselllargeamountofGerman
governmentbondsinfavorofFrenchstocks.Whichmeans:DownwiththeGermanmarkandattackon
theBundesbank!InseveralnewspapersacrosstheworldSorosispraisedasakindofRobinHoodofthe
ComputerAgesincebyspeculationhetakesfromtherichnationsingrandstyletohandouttoEastern
EuropeandRussiaviaseveralSorosFoundations,topreparethewayfordemocracyinthosepoor
countriesthathadbeenbleddrybyCommunism.
WhothenisSoros?Theofficialstorysaysthathewasbornin1930toJewishparentsandasateenager
hadbeenchasedfromBudapestbytheNazis.HeenrolledattheLondonSchoolofEconomicsandinthe
mid50scametotheU.S.TherehewasmagicallydrawntoWallStreet,buthiscareeruntil1969was
