Colleagues,

Iamwritingwithabriefupdate,asyouhavenodoubtseentheannouncementby
KathleenNeset,wholeadstheStateBoardofHigherEducation,aboutaninvestigation
intotheissuesaroundathleticsissuanceofmediaguidelines.

First,Ifullywelcomeanobjectiveinvestigationintothismatter,andthankChairNeset
fortheopportunity.Whileithasplayedoutinmediaasatumultuousissue,anobjective
reviewofthefactswilleffectivelyconcludethismatter.

Second,IbelieveIamcomingtoagreaterunderstandingofwheresomeofthemedia
coverageistangled.LastTuesday,NDSUissuedastatementrescindingtheguidelines,
andinit,IsaidIwasprofoundlydisappointedwhenIlearnedthefactsaboutthis
issue.ItappearsthatthiscommenthasbeeninterpretedtomeanthatIwas
disappointedinthenewguidelines,wheninfact,Iwasdisappointedintheprocess.
Becauseofthisinterpretation,somepeoplebelievethatmyinitialsupportofthe
guidelinesovertheweekendcannotbereconciledwiththisstatement.Icanunderstand
howsomemisunderstoodmymeaning.ThesimpletruthremainsthatIwas
disappointedintheprocess.

Herearethefacts:
Friday,July29:Guidelineswerereleasedwithoutmyknowledge.Ihadnotbeenconsultedaboutthem
inadvance.
FridaySunday,July2931:Isupportedtheathleticsstaffbasedonmyunderstandingofthefactsatthe
time.

Monday,Aug.1:Otheruniversityofficialslookedintothematterandinformedmethattheguidelines
hadnotbeenincludedintheoriginalbidinformationinFebruary,andthatsuchguidelineswerenotas
commonasIhadbeenleadtobelieve.ThesearetheconcernsthatIreferencedinmystatementon
Tuesday.
Tuesday,Aug.2:Idirectedthestafftorescindtheguidelines.IhadbeenkeepingtheChancellor
informedthroughouttheweekend,andonTuesday,IinformedtheChancellorandStateBoardmembers
aboutmydecision,includingthefollowing:Afterfurtherstudyoverthepasttwodays,Ivelearnedmuch
moreaboutthismatter.Myinitialunderstandingofthesituation,asitwasdescribedtome,wasnot
accurate.AlthoughIgraspthedirectionandultimategoalsofourAthleticDepartmentregardingthismatter,
theirprocesswasflawedtoalevelthatrequiresanimmediaterevocationofthemediapolicypendingfurther
study.
