030 HAROLD WASHINGTON LIBRARY SCAVENGER HUNT

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEACHERS

This folder includes staggered instructions for four teams, labeled A-D. Ideally each
class will have 3-4 teams of 3-4 students. Print one set of instructions for each of your
teams.

Teams are instructed to use their phones to take pictures of various items in the library
and to email them to their instructor. Be sure to either insert your own email address or
to change those instructions to suit your needs.

Each team is instructed to use the card catalog computers to locate the following:

A. Four books for which the instructor provides the titles. You can use the online
card catalog to find books in various fields. Ideally each team should have four
different books to look for; otherwise; the team that gets to a book first may not
return it to its proper place.

B. A book in the field of study of each member. When forming teams, try to
separate students who are studying the same field.

C. A book in the first language of each member. When forming teams, try to
separate students who speak the same first language.

The team instructions mention that teachers will be available on Floors 4-7. We should
pick a floor and try to hang out in a central location to monitor students progress or to
help if necessary.

The hunt should take around an hour, depending on how quickly students are able to
get their library cards.

Re: Harold Washington Library Class Field Trip

Thursday, October 1, 2014

Dear Students:

On Thursday of next week, the Level 3 Reading and Writing classes will be taking a field
trip to the Harold Washington Library in the Loop. We will meet outside of Addams Hall
at 2:00 pm that day and take the CTA Blue Line together to the Jackson station. From
there we will walk to the library. You will be done in plenty of time to return to UIC for
the break before your Listening and Speaking class. Please bring a fare (Ventra) card
with $4.50 for the public transportation cost.

During our trip, you will have the opportunity to explore the librarys available resources
in small groups. You will also be able to get a library card that you may use at any
Chicago Public Library location*. This card will allow you to check out books, videos,
and even museum passes that you can use for up four people to visit one of the many
museums in the city.

In order to get a library card, you need to bring two things to

the library:

1. Your student ID card

2. A piece of mail with your name and a Chicago

address on it.

*If you live outside the city of Chicago, you will need to get a local library first. Talk to
your instructor.

If you want to go to the library directly, you can meet us there at 2:30 at the Van Buren
Street Entrance. The address of the library is:

Harold Washington Library Center
400 South State Street
Chicago IL 60605

PLEASE BE AT THE LIBRARY BY 2:30, OR YOU WILL BE MARKED LATE. ALSO,

REMEMBER THAT REGULAR ATTENDANCE RULES APPLY.

*If you get lost and need assistance, you can contact me at 312-315-5030.
