Course Description
Overview of course
Sixth grade math focuses on reviewing all of the skills learned in the previous years of
mathematics while learning new concepts and skills in order to meet the national and Lincoln
School requirements. Students must be prepared to transition to more advanced math topics
such as algebra and geometry while enhancing their basic arithmetic knowledge. Students will
also learn the necessary tools to approach word problems and activate critical thinking skills
which will engage students in decision-making and thinking logically.

Course Goals
By the end of the course, the student will be expected to

Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.


Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions
by fractions.
Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.
Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between independent and dependent
variables.
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Develop understanding of statistical variability.
Summarize and describe distributions.
