STANDARD OPERATING PROCEEDURE FOR STARTING A RAW MILL

1. Verify the Grinding Orders, and make sure the Power Demand level will not be
exceeded. The Production Operator or Field Coordinator must check entire system
for any doors left open. See that guards are in place, and also check the mill feed
conveyors, screw conveyor covers and drives and Weigh Feeders before
attempting to startup a Finish Mill system.
2. Check ahead of time, if possible, to see if there are any Maintenance Clips or
Equipment showing NOT READY on the graphics or start page.
3. Check with Production Operator or Field Coordinator to verify if all Lube
Pressure Gauges show sufficient pressure and that the Mill Trunnions have
overhead oil. All the above is commonly called checking the mill out.
4. If there are no Lube Alarms in Place, then select the COMMON FINISH page
and go to the Start Page. When this section is running, then
5. Select RAW MATERIAL TRANSPORT section and select either #4 or #5 F-K
Compressor and #1 or #2 Raw F-K Pump, the corresponding Pumps and
Compressors must be set up physically in the Plant. Remember that to select
groups on the start pages, click the center button on mouse to make it turn yellow
(which will also say accepted). The left mouse button is used to start selected
groups, using the green start button (donut) on the left side of the screen. If
these mouse functions are not already known, please go directly to jail! Do not
pass go, or collect $200
6. #1 Finish F-K Compressor has a selection button on this page, since this
Compressor can be used as a crossover for the Raw F-K Pumps. Incidentally, the
resets for this compressor must be made on the COMMON RAW page, even if #1
F-K Compressor is being used as a Finish Compressor.
7. After the F-K pump and compressor are running and all pressures and amps look
normal, have field personnel verify that the F-K pump hopper is empty. There is,
also, a high level alarm that will appear if the hopper is full, but do not always
trust this. If the alarm is on, it must be re-set using the silence and re-set buttons
on the COMMON RAW page once the hopper is cleared and emptied.
8. It is now time to start the auxiliary and supporting equipment for the mill. Go to
the #1 or #2 Raw Mill graphics page, and left click on the START page. Center
click on the Raw Material Transport group and it will turn yellow. Click on the
green start button.
9. If starting #1 Raw Mill, make sure the separator is selected to start with the group.
If starting #2 Raw Mill only, make sure the separator is de-selected on #1. The #1
separator DC fan and DC screw need to be running to vent the FK pump. To deselect or select the separator, center click on the orange S square.
10. Watch all equipment on the graphics page and make sure all necessary equipment
starts. Keep an eye on the separator amps along with the FK pump amps and
pressures. Separator amps should come down to around 90 amps and the FK
pump should be around 65 amps and the pressure should be less than 8 psi.
11. Once the mentioned equipment looks normal, it is now time to start the mill. Go
to the start page and center click on the Main Mill Motor group. It will turn

yellow. Make sure that the orange S buttons for Test Permissive Main Motor
and Spot Permissive Main Motor are de-selected. Left click on the green start
button. The Main Mill Motor group now has the command to start.
12. Before and after starting feed to the Mill, keep a constant check on the F-K Pump
amps and line pressure. The pump flapper valve sticks open at times and results
in the pump ceasing to pump. This will very quickly allow the pump hopper to
overflow, causing dusting and spillage in the Mill Room. This can most usually be
detected when the pump amps drop below 63. The pump flapper arm will have to be
lifted up and down until the pump starts pumping again. Sometimes the hopper will
have to be beat on to get the feed to come down into the screw chamber. This is a
common occurrence.
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEEDURE FOR PUTTING FEED TO FINISH MILLS
1. The appropriate timing to start feed to a Mill that has just started is extremely
variable.
2. Feed settings should be verified with the Lab and reconciled between the Raw
Mill Log and the Feed Ratio by left clicking on the RATIO graphics box located
under the Feed-O-Weight graphics on the RAW MILL page.
3. Center Click on the Mill Elevator Amps Control (green on top and orange on
bottom circle located just the Mill graphics) and set to desired set point by left
clicking on the Out box. This value should then show white numbers in a blue
background. Enter the desired setting. The standard set point is 40 TPH, but can
be more, or less, depending on the temperature of the Mill and the condition of
the feed (wet rock vs. dry rock), and the ambient temperature in the Mill Room.
Feed can be started at less than 35 tph if the Separator Dust Collector inlet
temperature is 78 degrees or lower (78 or lower will have TI-31401 or TI-32401
showing alarm status). If this temperature is below 70 degrees, it may be
advisable to start the Hot Air Generator (Todd Furnace). Instructions for this will
be discussed separately. AGAIN, have someone check the wetness of the rock on
the Mill feed conveyor or Weight Feeders (F-O-Ws). A separator DC temp of 85
degrees is a better starting point.
