    The magnetic balance test is conducted on transformers to identify inter-turn faults and magnetic imbalance. The test is usually done on the star side of a transformer by applying a two phase supply of 440V across two phases and measuring the voltages between the phases and the open third phase. If the sum of the two measured voltages equals the applied voltage, then the transformer is magnetically balanced, but if not, it could indicate an inter-turn short circuit. The test provides an indication of magnetic balance but is not absolute and should be used along with other tests.

    The Magnetic Balance test is conducted on Transformers to


    identify inter turn faults and magnetic imbalance. The magnetic
    balancetestisusuallydoneonthestarsideofatransformer.A
    twophasesupply440Visappliedacrosstwophases,say,1Uand
    1V.ThephaseWiskeptopen.Thevoltageisthenmeasured
    between UV and UW. The sum of these two voltages should
    givetheappliedvoltage.Thatis,1U1W+1V1Wwillbeequalto
    1U1V.
    For instance, if the voltage applied is 440V between 1U1V, then
    thevoltagesobtainedcanbe
    1U1V=1U1W+1V1W
    440V=260V+180V
    Thevoltagesobtainedinthesecondarywillalsobeproportionaltothevoltagesabove.
    This indicates that the transformer is magnetically balanced. If there is any interturn short
    circuitthatmayresultinthesumofthetwovoltagesnotbeingequaltotheappliedvoltage.
    The Magnetic balance test is only an indicative test for the transformer. Its results are not
    absolute.Itneedstobeusedinconjunctionwithothertests.
