INTRODUCTION

As the national outcry and panic over the crack epidemic abates, public attention
and concern is now concentrated on DRUG. Drug is a chemical substance that
brings about physical physiological, behavioral and or psychological change in a
person taking it. Drugs may be legal or illegal. Psychoactive drugs affect the central
nervous system and alter a person's mood, thinking and behavior. It is divided into
three categories such as; Depressants, Stimulants and Hallucinogens.
Depressants: Drugs that decrease alertness by slowing down the activity of the
central nervous system (e.g.heroin, alcohol and analgesics).
Stimulants: Drugs that increase the body's state of arousal by increasing the activity
of the brain (e.g. caffeine, nicotine and amphetamines).
Hallucinogens: Drugs that alter perception and can cause hallucinations, such as
seeing or hearing something that is not there (e.g. LSD and 'magic
mushrooms'). Other: Some drugs fall into the 'other' category, as they may have
properties of more than one of the above categories.
There are many illegal drugs that are being abused by our society today. Drugs such
as marijuana, meth, and the abuse of prescription medications are on the rise. It is
important for everyone to raise their level of awareness in order to reduce the risk of
drug abuse or to help someone they care for who is already suffering from drug
abuse or addiction.
Illegal drugs come in different shapes, sizes, and types. Each particular drug
produces unique effects on the user, this is why you may have heard the term "drug
of choice". This means, the drug that the user prefers. People use illegal drugs for
many reasons, boredom, to fit in, experimentation, etc. They begin to
abuse drugs when they repeatedly take them to solve their problems or to make
them feel "normal".
As one encounters health problems, drugs are always there to ease the same. It
does not only cure illness per-se, but the same event prevents the spread of
diseases. In some parts of our country, the non-industrial societies in particular, were
people are used to applying primitive ways to medication, are now open to accepting
modern means of alleviating diseases thru one of mans best invented tools-drugs;
indeed, such is a sign of our countrys development.
The proper intake of drugs as prescribed by the physicians will not only prolong the
life of a sick individual, but the same may eventually led to healing or a total
recovery. Proper use of it in accordance with ones bodily needs prevent risk inherent
overdose and gets rid of possible harm.

However, the proper use of drugs make cease to exist if there in legal purposes will
not be observed. As the individual overuses the same, it will surely bring harmful
effects to him in the long run. Initially, such uncontrollable usage will expose a
person to addiction, drug dependency, so to speak. Such abuse will definitely affect
the individuals behavior, mindset, lifestyle, and even set of beliefs which, if not
prevented, may translate to violation of laws, commission of crimes, and inflicting
harm to oneself and others. Hence, the supposed means to cure illnesses diseases
is now an instrument that pushes the individual into further abuse.
Indeed, serious problems arise when a drug abuser is not cured or does not stop
improper use of drugs; here, one becomes more aggressive in perpetrating illicit
activities. Consequently, he will be considered a menace to society.
Insofar as drug dependents or abusers are concerned, if caught for the first time
they will be subjected to a rehabilitation program for the purpose of winning back
their natural condition so as to be acceptable again to society.
A proper and adequate rehabilitation program can reverse many disabling conditions
or can help patients cope with deficits that cannot be reversed by medical care.
Rehabilitation addresses the patient's physical, psychological, andenvironmental ne
eds. It is achieved by restoring the patient's physical functions and/or modifying the
patient's physicaland social environment. The main types of rehabilitation are physic
al, occupational, and speech therapy.
Among the different approaches for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of drug
addiction, exploring the evolutionary basis of addiction would provide us with better
understanding since evolution, personality, behavior and drug abuse are tightly
interlinked. It is our duty as researcher to explore the evolutionary basis and origins
of drug addiction so as to uncover the underlying causes rather than continuing to
solely focus on the physiological signs and global activity of this epidemic. Too often
the treatment of addiction simply works to alleviate the symptoms of addiction,
dealing with overcoming the physiological dependence and working through
withdrawal symptoms as the body readjusts to a non-dependent state of
homeostasis. However, we must not only concentrate on this aspect of addiction
when considering global treatments and preventative programs. We must take into
consideration that it is not purely the physiology of addiction we are battling.
Cognizant of foregoing concerns, the researchers emphasize individual needs of
drug users such as Social skills training and counseling services provided to address
the emotional adjustment needs of the individual and family.
