Snacking may not seem like


part of a healthy diet, but the
right snacks can help men
and women fight midday
hunger without contributing
to unwanted weight gain. The
following low-calorie snacks
wont compromise adults
efforts to maintain healthy
weights, and they might
prove useful as men and
women look for that extra
boost during the day.

1. Popcorn

Popcorn is low in calories


and a good source of dietary
fiber. Popcorn also is high
in polyphenols, which are
antioxidants that have been
linked to reductions in heart
disease and certain cancers.
Air-popped popcorn that is
prepared without any oil is
your best option, as a cup
of such popcorn may only
add up to about 30 calories.
Avoid adding salt or butter
or purchasing premade
popcorn that is heavy on
both, as both ingredients
can compromise the health
benefits of popcorn.

2. Nonfat
Greek Yogurt

Though its not as low in


calories as popcorn, nonfat
Greek yogurt is still a lowcalorie snack thats high in

protein. Nonfat Greek yogurt


may have as much as two
times the amount of protein
as traditional yogurts, and
thats beneficial because
protein helps you feel full
longer, which should help
you maintain a healthy
weight and avoid overeating.
Nonfat Greek yogurt also
tends to have less sugar than
traditional yogurts, and its
creamy texture gives many
people the impression that
they are eating something
decadent.

3. Hummus

Made primarily from ground


chickpeas, hummus is a
protein- and fiber-rich snack
that has been linked to a
host of health benefits,
including a reduced risk for
heart disease and certain
types of cancers. Dip
vegetables such as baby
carrots into hummus, and
youll have a low-calorie
snack thats also high in
vitamin A and beta carotene.

4. Pistachios

Many people might read the


labels of pistachios and be
turned off by the fat content.
But pistachios are low in
saturated fat and high in
protein, and a couple dozen
pistachios may only amount
to about 95 calories. Eat

add salt, which can negate
their health benefits.

craze can be confusing, and
misinformation regarding the best
way to proceed with a cleanse only
illustrates the emphasis men and
women considering detox diets must
place on learning as much about them

Detoxing involves changing ones diet
for a predetermined period of time
for the purpose of ridding the body of
unhealthy, potentially toxic substances.
While there may be some immediate
weight loss associated with detoxing,
losing weight is not the main purpose
of detoxing.
Men and women have various detox
options to choose from, including
some that target specific areas of the
body or others that aim to improve
overall health.

Detox diets tend to be restrictive diets,


which may not make them practical for
everyone - particularly those who may
have health ailments or specific dietary
needs. Consult with a physician prior
to beginning a detox diet to ensure it
will not interfere with any treatments.

What can women do

if aging and lack of Estrogen is causing problems


with intimacy, bladder infections and urine leaks?

he Genitourinary syndrome
of menopause (GMS) is the
new terminology used to
describe symptoms occurring
due to vulvovaginal atrophy caused
by low estrogen seen at menopause.
This syndrome may also occur after
removal of the ovaries or chemotherapy
treatments for breast cancer. What
we see is the superficial vaginal cell
lining is lost and the layers become
very fragile. This leads to lack of the
natural secretions, folds and elasticity
and the vagina has more laxity,
shortening and narrowing. These
women have symptoms of vaginal
dryness, discharge, itching and Pain
or sensitivity with intercourse. The thin
vaginal skin tears easier worsened
by the lack of lubrication causing the
issues with sexual dissatisfaction. Also,
the vaginal canal changes from a acidic
to a more alkaline environment, causing
the normal good vaginal bacteria to
disappear. The bad bacteria start to
dominate leading to recurrent bladder
infections. This often results in overuse
of antibiotics by unknowing physicians.
It is an amazing fact that 50% of
postmenopausal women in the United
States report symptoms of vaginal
atrophy affecting there quality of life.
These women complain of decreased
sexual encounters, sexuality, negative
impact on marriage or relationships and
self esteem.
As a specialist in treating women with
these issues, I have prescribed estrogen
based vaginal creams or pills to help
overcome the associated symptoms
of GMS. The concerns of such therapy
include potential side effects, the
mess of creams and cost of ongoing

medication needs. Our Lake Norman

ancer affects millions of people across


the globe each year. While those
diagnosed with cancer face the biggest
challenges, cancer patients friends and
families also must deal with the consequences
of a cancer diagnosis and the heartbreak that
often accompanies seeing a loved one undergo
cancer treatments. Strong support systems can
help cancer patients during their treatments, but
men and women need not wait until a loved one
has been diagnosed with cancer to begin fighting
the disease. Taking steps to prevent cancer may
be easier when tackled together as a family or
a group of friends. According the University of
Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the
worlds leading centers devoted to cancer patient
care, research, education and prevention, many
foods can help men, women and children reduce
their cancer risk. When shopping for household
groceries, families and groups of friends living
together can aim to make the following cancerfighting foods part of their daily diets.

xercise is an
important
component of a
healthy lifestyle.
Many people establish bold
fitness goals with a mind
toward getting in shape. Its
tempting to jump right in,
especially when friends or
relatives reach their own
fitness goals. However,
inactive men and women
risk injury when diving right
in and not taking a gradual
approach to fitness and
weight loss regimens. To
reap the most rewards from
exercise, take the proper
precautions and follow these
guidelines.
Speak with your doctor
before beginning an exercise
regimen. Get medical
clearance before you begin
a new exercise regimen,
especially if you have
any preexisting medical

conditions. Your doctor may


suggest certain modifications
that can reduce strain on
certain parts of the body
or advise you on the most
effective activities for
people with your condition.
Healthy individuals may be
cleared outright and can
begin their fitness regimens
immediately. Its also wise
to inform doctors of fitness
plans and goals so they can
help track your progress.
Dont eat heavy meals
before exercising. Avoid large
meals before engaging in
strenuous physical activity. A
light, healthy snack gives you
a little fuel without affecting
your ability to exercise. After
eating, the body diverts blood
flow to the gastrointestinal
tract to aid with digestion.
Exercising while this blood
flow is centralized in the
gastrointestinal tract may

cause muscle cramps or


generalized weakness.
Nutrition experts at the
University of California, Los
Angeles, say that people
who exercise strenuously
on a full stomach also may
experience reflux, hiccups,
nausea, and vomiting. Wait
at least an hour after
eating full meals to
exercise.
Warm up. Its important
to warm up muscles
before beginning a
workout. Stretches, light
movements and range
of motion exercises can
improve flexibility and
prepare the body for more
to come. If muscles arent
fully stretched and warm,
injuries like strains and
tendon tears may occur.
Take the time to warm up;
otherwise, you may find
yourself on the sidelines.
Wear the appropriate
equipment. Invest in
quality athletic shoes
and other equipment
made for the activity you
will be performing. The
right equipment can help
prevent injury. Athletic
shoes that fail to provide
adequate support can
increase your risk of
injury. Good shoes do not
have to cost a fortune, as
there are plenty of brands
that will work quite well.
If you need suggestions,
discuss your exercise
regimen and goals with a
podiatrist or orthopedist.
Orthotic inserts can be
used to modify footwear
and provide additional
support. You also may need
equipment specific to a
given activity. For example,

gloves are essential
for kickboxing classes.
Speak with a trainer or
gym employee if you need
assistance.
Take weather into
consideration. Ice, snow,
rain, and wind can make
jogging or other outdoor
activities more challenging,
if not dangerous. Always
exercise caution when your
workout regimen involves
exercising outdoors. Stay
indoors if you see thunder
and lightning.
Stay hydrated. The Better
Health Channel of the
Victoria State Government
says a person can lose
around one and a half
liters of fluid for every hour
of exercise. Drink water
before, during and after
each exercise session.
If you need water while
exercising, take small sips.
Be aware of your body.
Take notice of how you
feel. If something doesnt
feel just right, then stop
immediately, rest and/or
seek medical attention.
Pace yourself and take
the time to rest. Dont
try to do everything all at
once. Slowly build up your
durability and stamina by
gradually increasing the
intensity of your workouts.
Give yourself time to
recover between workouts
as well.
Exercise is a key part of a
healthy lifestyle. Remember
to do so safely and
effectively.

Sleep
right:

How to ensure
a more restful
nights sleep

dequate sleep is an essential


element of a healthy lifestyle.
But as beneficial as a good
nights rest is, restful sleep is
proving elusive for millions of people
across the globe.
According to the American Academy of
Sleep Medicine, 10 percent of adults
in the United States have a chronic
insomnia disorder. That translates
to roughly 32 million people in the
United States alone who struggle
to fall asleep or stay asleep at least
three times per week for at least
three months. Sufficient sleep boosts
energy levels and makes it easier to
focus and concentrate, while insomnia
contributes to poor memory, disturbs
mood and leads to daytime sleepiness.
But insomnia is not just harmful to
individuals. The AASM notes that
researchers estimate that insomnia
costs an estimated $63 billion in lost
work performance each year in the U.S.
Combating insomnia is no small task,
but the following healthy sleep habits
may help men and women overcome
their bouts of insomnia and get more
restful sleep.

Avoid too many beverages before


bedtime. Drinking water or beverages
that include caffeine or alcohol too
close to bedtime can interrupt sleep or
make it difficult to fall asleep. Too much
water before going to bed may lead to
nightly bathroom breaks that interrupt
your sleep. Along those same lines,
alcohol consumed too close to bedtime
may make it easy to fall asleep fast, but
youre likely to wake up once the effects
of the alcohol wear off, which can be
very soon after your head hits the pillow.
In addition, avoid caffeinated beverages
in the late afternoon or evening, as
caffeine stimulates the central nervous
system and may compromise your ability
to fall asleep. Nicotine also serves as a
stimulant, so smokers fighting insomnia
should avoid tobacco products in the
hours before they plan to go to bed.
Get out of bed if you cant fall asleep.
The AASM recommends getting out of
bed if you havent fallen asleep within
20 minutes of lying down. The longer
you lay in bed without falling asleep,
the more likely you are to dwell on your
sleeping problems. If you need to get
out of bed, spend some quiet time
reading a book in another room before
returning to bed.

Dim the lights inside your home. Two


to three hours before bedtime, dim the
lights in your home. Dim lighting signals
to your brain that it should begin making
melatonin, a hormone that is closely
associated with sleep.
Eliminate potentially distracting
sounds. A poor sleep environment can
contribute to insomnia, and distracting
sounds can make it hard to fall asleep.
Fix distractions such as leaky faucets
and close bedroom windows if nearby
traffic is compromising your ability to
fall asleep at night. If necessary, use
a white noise machine that blocks
out distractions but contributes to a
consistent sleep environment.
Use your bed only for sleep and sex.
Resist the temptation to finish watching
a movie, television show or ballgame in
bed, using your bed only for sleep and
sex. If you grow accustomed to working
in bed or watching television in bed, you
may have trouble falling asleep once you
turn the lights off and close your eyes.

Medication mismanagement

Medication management
is an important issue for
seniors and their families.
Failure to properly manage
medications can threaten the
lives of seniors, highlighting
the emphasis families must
place on ensuring seniors
take their medications in
strict adherence to their
physicians instructions.

Polypharmacy, or the taking


of multiple medications for
different conditions, can be
a potential health hazard
for the thousands of seniors
who must manage health
conditions with prescription
drugs. Harmful drug
interactions are a result of
the confusion that can arise
when seniors take multiple
medications at the same
time. The American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists
estimates that more than 34
percent of senior citizens are
prescribed medications by
more than one physician, and
72 percent use medications
they were prescribed more
than six months prior. Many
people also have begun
pharmacy shopping to
save money. According to
a study published in 2010
in American Nurse Today,
44 percent of men and 57
percent of women older than
age 65 take five or more
medications per week, with
some taking as many as 10.
Medication confusion is one
risk, but older adults also
metabolize medications

differently than young people.


As a result, they may be more
susceptible to overdose or
other ill effects. Families
looking to help seniors
effectively manage their
medications should consider
the following tips.
Keep a running list of
medications. Maintain
a list of all medications
being taken, noting both
prescription and over-thecounter medications and
any supplements and herbs.
Provide a copy to any new
doctors you visit and any new
pharmacies you patronize.
Use pill sorters. Medication
sorters can keep medications
organized and eliminate
some of the personal error
in medication management.
Organizers have daily slots
and may also differentiate
between nighttime and
daytime medications.
Understand why each
medication is being
prescribed. Ask your
pharmacist and doctor to
explain why each medication
is prescribed. This
information should be printed
on the prescription label.
Some drugs designed for
one symptom may actually
be used to treat other issues
as well.
Ask for help. Some seniors
may benefit from friendly
reminders from a loved
one regarding when to

take certain medications,


especially if they need to take
multiple doses throughout
the day. Cognitively impaired
seniors may require the
services of a visiting nurse or
another caregiver.

Recognize that not all


medications are right for
seniors. The American
Geriatrics Society maintains a
list of medications that older
adults should avoid or take
with extreme caution. Some
drugs pose a high risk of side
effects or interactions, while
others are less effective.

Discuss alternatives with


your physician if you are
prescribed one of these
medications.

Keep a medication diary.


Record any side effects
that occur and how the
medications make you
feel. Always bring up issues
promptly with a doctor.
Proper medication
management can help
seniors avoid drug-related
accidents or worse.

is cancer?
Common forms
of cancer

ancer can affect


anyone. Sometimes
it strikes with
no warning,
while other times people
may have a genetic
predisposition. Various
medical organizations say
there are between 100
and 200 different types of
cancer. Everyone has heard
of cancer, but some are still
unsure of what cancer is.

Defining cancer
The organization Cancer
Research UK defines cancer
as abnormal cell growth.
Cancer cells are cells that
divide in an uncontrolled way.
New human cells normally
grow and divide to form new
cells as the body requires
them. As healthy cells grow
old or become damaged, they
die off and new cells take
their place. However, when
cancer develops, this process
goes haywire. Damaged cells
become even more abnormal
and can survive when they
would normally die. These
cells keep multiplying and
eventually can form lumps
or masses of tissue called
tumors. This is the case

in most cancers, with the


exception of leukemia,
wherein cancer prohibits
normal blood function due to
abnormal cell division in the
bloodstream.
Not all lumps in the body are
tumors. Lumps that remain
in place and do not spread
to other areas of the body
can be harmless or benign.
According to the American
Cancer Society, cancerous
tumors are malignant, which
means they can spread into,
or invade, nearby tissues.
Cancer stages actually are
determined based by how far
cancerous cells have spread
beyond their point of origin.

Cancer stages
Cancer is staged according
to particular criteria based
on each individual type of
cancer. Generally speaking,
lower stages of cancer,
such as stage 1 or 2, refer
to cancers that have not
spread very far. Higher
stages of cancer, such as 3,
mean cancer has branched
out more. Stage 4 refers
to cancer that has spread
considerably.

Cancer can occur just about


anywhere in the body.
Cancers of the breast, lung,
colon, and prostate cancers

The 2013 Canadian Health
Measures Survey found that,
between 2009 and 2011,
the number of Canadians
with unhealthy levels of LDL
increased significantly with
age, with 40 percent of men
and women between the
ages of 40 and 59 suffering
from unhealthy LDL levels.

reputation, that stature can

two types of cholesterol, one

disease and stroke. Highdensity lipoprotein, often
referred to as HDL or
good cholesterol, absorbs
low-density lipoprotein,
or bad cholesterol, or
LDL, and carries it back
to the liver, which then
flushes it from the body.
HDL accounts for a minority
of the bodys cholesterol.
Unfortunately, the majority

Eat right. Avoid foods that

saturated fats and trans fats.
The AHA notes that foods
that contain saturated fats
contribute to high levels of
LDL. Fatty beef, lamb, pork,
poultry with skin, lard and
cream, butter, and cheese
are just a few of the foods
that contain saturated
fats. Those foods all come
from animal sources, but
many baked goods and
fried foods are also high in
saturated fat and should be
avoided. Fruits, vegetables
and whole grains are hearthealthy foods that can help
women lower their LDL levels
and reduce their risk for
cardiovascular disease.
Exercise regularly.
Routine physical activity
can help women lower their
LDL levels, especially when
such exercise is combined
with a healthy diet. The
Office on Womens Health
recommends women get two
hours and 30 minutes of
moderate-intensity aerobic
activity each week, or one
hour and 15 minutes of
vigorous-intensity aerobic
activity each week. Speak

condition. Women who want to
do more than aerobic activity
can still meet their exercise
requirements by combining
moderate and vigorous

While research does not indicate
that smoking directly impacts
LDL levels, the toxins produced
and inhaled from cigarettes can
modify existing LDL, making it
more likely to cause inflammation.
Cholesterol does not discriminate,
and women need to be just as
mindful as men when monitoring
their total cholesterol levels.

excited about eating right

hildhood obesity is reaching


record heights across the
globe. According to the World
Health Organization, an
estimated 41 million children were
obese or overweight as of 2014.
Obesity is an all-too-familiar problem
for parents, many of whom are aware
of the long-term threat that childhood
obesity poses to their sons and
daughters. According to Lets Move!,
an initiative launched by First Lady
of the United States Michelle Obama
thats dedicated to solving the problem
of childhood obesity, obese kids are
more likely to become obese as adults
than youngsters who maintain healthy
weights throughout their childhoods.
In addition, obese children may be at
greater risk for cardiovascular
diseases such as high cholesterol
and high blood pressure.

Combatting obesity can start in the


kitchen, where parents can set a
positive example by making sure the
whole family eats healthy. Parents know
that encouraging youngsters to forgo
fatty foods in favor of healthier fare is
not always so easy. But the following
tips can help get kids excited about
eating healthy, which can help them
maintain healthy weights and lower their
risk of various ailments.
Invite kids into the kitchen. Kids
might be more excited about healthy
foods when they play a role in preparing
the meals they eat. People who cook
often cite the pride they feel when they
cook meals that they and their families
or guests enjoy. Kids feel the same
sense of pride and accomplishment
when preparing meals, and that pride
may increase the likelihood that they
will eat the entire meal, including

vegetables and other healthy foods,


without complaint.
Reinvent foods kids dont like. Rare is
the child who embraces vegetables. But
parents can experiment with vegetables
in ways that might make them more
attractive to youngsters. For example,
rather than serving carrots without
sauce or seasoning, serve them with

Available in various flavors, hummus is

not discourage parents too much, as
much of the fat found in hummus is
unsaturated fat that wont negatively
affect kids hearts. If hummus does not
do the trick, parents can look for other
healthy dips, such as those with a Greek
yogurt base, that can add flavor to

veggies without compromising their


nutritional value.
Solicit kids input regarding the
menu. Much like kids might be more
excited about eating meals they
prepare, they may also be more likely
to embrace healthy diets when their
parents solicit their input regarding
the weekly meal menu. If kids ask
for unhealthy fare like hamburgers or
macaroni and cheese, compromise
by preparing healthier alternatives,
such turkey burgers or whole grain
pasta with parmesan cheese
sprinkled on top. Explain your
reasons for preparing healthier
alternatives. In addition, dont be
afraid to veer off course every so
often and let kids choose a meal
thats not as nutritious as you would
like. Straying from healthy fare is only
problematic if it becomes routine.
But periodic indulgences in pizza and
other less nutritional fare should not
affect kids long-term health.

Make experimenting fun.


Parents who love trying new things
in the kitchen or when dining
out can encourage the same
spirit of experimentation in their
children. Kids who are focused
and enthusiastic about trying new
foods may not think twice about
how the new foods theyre trying
are healthy. Make experimenting
with new foods a family affair by
alternating who gets to choose the
restaurant when ordering takeout or
the type of cuisine to cook on nights
when the family experiments in the
kitchen. Once the choice has been
made, choose healthy items and
share dishes so kids can try various
healthy foods in a single meal.

colon cancer and 39,000

will be diagnosed in 2016.
Colorectal cancer is the
third most common cancer
diagnosed in men and
women. However, coffee may
help reduce instances of
colon cancer.
A study titled Coffee
Consumption and the Risk
of Colorectal Cancer,
which was published in the
journal Cancer Epidemiology,
Biomarkers & Prevention,
found that regular coffee
consumption inversely
correlates to colorectal
cancer risk. Coffee has been
identified as a protective

to Dr. Stephen Gruber, the
author of the study, coffee
contains many elements
that contribute to overall
colorectal health, which may
explain coffees preventive
properties. Caffeine and
polyphenol can act as
antioxidants, limiting the
growth of potential colon
cancer cells. Melanoidins
generated during the roasting
process have been thought
to encourage colon mobility,
and diterpenes may prevent
cancer by enhancing the
bodys defense against
oxidative damage.
Although data continues to
suggest that coffee can help
reduce colorectal cancer
risk and survival rates,
additional information is
still needed before doctors
can start recommending
coffee consumption as a
preventative measure.

Juices: Juice seems like a


healthy choice, but whole
fruits are the better option.
Juices may not retain the
peels of the fruits, which
tend to contain the fiber and
the bulk of the nutritional
content. Juice may also be
loaded in calories, whereas
whole fruit tends to be low
in calories.
Granola: Granola is full
of healthy ingredients, but
it also may contain other
ingredients that can be
high in fat, like oils or nuts.
Granola is best when eaten
in moderation.
Good fats: Certain
superfoods contain a lot of
nutritional benefits, but may
be high in fats as well. For
example, avocados contain
fiber, vitamin C, vitamin E,
and potassium, among other
antioxidants, and can be
quite filling. However, they
also are calorically dense, so
keep an eye on serving sizes.

Wine: The health benefits


of red wine have been
widely touted. People who
consume wine may be at
a reduced risk for heart
disease, Alzheimers disease
and certain cancers. Red
wine also may help keep
weight gain in check. But
its important to avoid
overconsumption of red
wine. A five-ounce serving
is roughly 130 calories, and
too many glasses of wine can
impair your judgment.
Yogurt: Check the labels
on your favorite yogurts.
Yogurt is a great source of
protein, but that may be
offset by sugar or chemical
additives. Plain Greek yogurt
is a smart choice, and you
can supplement yogurt with
fresh fruits.

While not all joint pain is
debilitating, the discomfort
of joint pain is such that its
wise for adults to take steps
to protect their joints with the
hope of preventing joint pain
down the road. Recognizing
that joint pain can negatively
affect quality of life, the
Arthritis Foundation offers
the following joint protection
tips to men and women.
Forgo fashion with regard
to footwear. When women
choose their footwear,

fashion should not be their


top priority. According to
the Arthritis Foundation,
three-inch heels stress the
feet seven times more than
one-inch heels and heels put
additional stress on knees,
possibly increasing womens
risk for osteoarthritis. Though
heels may be fashionable,
the risk of developing joint
pain is not worth making the
fashion statement.
Get some green in your
diet. A healthy diet pays
numerous dividends, but
many may not know that a
healthy diet can help prevent
joint pain. Green vegetables
such as spinach, broccoli,
kale and parsley are high in
calcium and can reduce agerelated bone loss while also
slowing cartilage destruction.
Shed those extra pounds.
If you start including more

healthy vegetables in your


diet, you might just start to
lose a little weight as well.
Such weight loss also can
help your joints, as the AF
notes that every extra pound
a person gains puts four
times the stress on his or
her knees. The AF also notes
that research has shown that
losing as little as 11 pounds
can reduce a persons risk of
osteoarthritis of the knee by
50 percent.
Hit the pool. Swimming
is a great full-body workout
and can be especially
helpful to the joints. The
buoyancy of water supports
the bodys weight, reducing
stress on the joints and
minimizing pain as a result. If
possible, swimmers already
experiencing pain should
swim in heated pools, which
can help relieve pain. While
you can still benefit from

swimming in pools with


colder temperatures, cold
water may not soothe the
joints like warm water can.
Take breaks at work. Many
people develop joint pain
thanks to their jobs. If you
spend all day sitting at a
desk or standing on your feet,
try to find a greater balance
between the two. Joints can
grow stiff from sitting all day,
while standing throughout
your work day can stress the
joints. Take a short break
every 30 minutes to stand up
and walk around if you spend
most of your day at a desk.
If you stand a lot at your job,
stop to sit down for a few
minutes once every half hour.
Joint pain and aging do not
have to go hand in hand.
