Class Expectations and Policy

8th Grade ELA:

- About me: My name is Holly Paul. This is my third year at SMS, and my 21st year of
teachingI I received my undergraduate and Masters degrees from the University of North
Alabama, which is located in my native state. I received my Education Specialist degree from
MTSU, and my Doctor of Education from Trevecca. In addition to teaching 8th grade, I also
teach graduate students at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN and doctoral
students at Trevecca. I enjoy teaching reading and staying current on reading research, and
teaching at these three levels certainly helps me to do that!

- Parent E-mail: Anytime you have a concern and wish to speak with me, the best first step as
a parent is to contact me via email. I check my e-mail several times a day during the week
and will respond to e-mails as soon as I can, usually after school.

Classroom Expectations and Student Behavior:

- Seated and SilentTardiness: I expect students to come into the classroom, pick up the
materials they need for the day, and to be seated at their desk by the time the bell rings.
Students who are late more than 1 time in a week will receive detention before school or
during lunch.

- Seat Assignments: Students are assigned new seats regularly these are non-negotiable
seating assignments. Students who are not seated in their assigned seat when the bell rings
will be counted as tardy.

- Borrowing Materials: Students should not take school supplies without asking. If a student
comes to class without supplies, I will loan anything he needs for the days class in exchange
for a cell phone (or comparable collateral).

- The Restroom: Students should go to the restroom between classes or during other free
times throughout the day. Leaving the classroom during class is allowed only during an
emergencyI will not allow students to leave the classroom, including going to the
restroom, more than three times per semester. I only allow one person to leave the room
at a time, and students will not be allowed to leave the room the first or last 10 minutes of
class. I log every time a student leaves the classroom in his agenda; if he does not have an
agenda, he cannot leave.

- Food and Drink: Please do not eat or drink in my classroom. The mess is too much. If I see
it, I will ask you to put it away (except bottled water).

- Phones and Electronic Devices: RCS has a BYOD (bring your own device) phone policy.
During certain times and for specific instructional reasons, students may use phones in the
classroom. This privilege should not be taken advantage ofstudents should not use
phones in the classroom without being instructed to do so. If I find them, I will hold them until
the end of the day or turn them in to the office.

- Dismissal Policy: Students should remain in their seats until the bell rings. If a student is
out of his/ her seat when the bell rings, I will hold him until all other students have left the
room. Periodically, I will stop class 5-10 minutes early and hand out cleaning task-cards.
Students will be asked to clean and straighten the room according to whatever is written on
their card. I will hold students after the bell until all tasks have been completed.

- Detention: I regularly assign lunch detention. If a student is assigned detention and skips, I
will notify parents and schedule detention either before or after school. If a student
participates in a club or is on a team, I will notify the sponsor/coach of the students behavior.

- Friday Reward Day: Every other Friday, students who have not been written up, given
detention, or missed any work, including bell work and homework, will be allowed to
participate in a guided free-period. I will give the students a leisure, but academic, activity to
complete the last 30 minutes of class. All other students will be finishing make-up work or
completing literacy activities.

Grades and Academic Expectations:

- Grading Philosophy: Grades relay to students the progress they are making in class. I post
at least one grade per week. The grades listed on progress reports and report cards reflect
both the amount of effort and the percentage of material that a student has learned during the
grading period. Learning is an interactive processstudents need to interact with the teacher
and with other students. The longer a student waits to complete an assignment, the less likely
he is to actually engage the material being assessed; assignments should be completed as
soon as possible.

- Website: I update my website/grading program regularly. If you need to know whether or not
something has been graded, please check online before asking me.

- Homework/ Literacy Practice: Homework will be assigned every other Monday. Students
have 4 days or until the Thursday of the same week that it is assigned to complete the HW.
If a student misses Thursdays class, the homework is due on Friday when he returns.
Students who do not turn in their homework will complete it during the Friday reward day.

- CFAs: CFAs will be taken 5 times this year. Any student who fails a Common Assessment
will need to schedule a time with me before school or during Training Camp for remediation
and to retake the CFA. I will not make time during class to retake these tests.

- Late Work: Students who miss class or who do not complete assignments by the due-date
for an excused reason have 3 days to complete that work for full credit. It is each students
responsibility to search out and complete missing work when he misses class or does not turn
in an assignment. I will stop taking any make-up/ redo work one week before grades are
supposed to be submitted. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.

- Portfolio: Each student will be responsible for compiling an 8th grade portfolio.
Samples of work, both teacher selected and student selected will be included. Upon
completion, the student will present this portfolio as evidence of his preparedness for
high school.
