Course Description: In 6th grade math, the student will experience reinforcement in working basic
operations with whole numbers and decimals and expanding knowledge of fractions. The student will
also learn to apply these skills in problem solving and consumer mathematics. Applications of basic
operations to ratios and proportions will be presented. The study of geometric shapes and mathematic
patterns will be examined. Students will be exposed to integers, their use and their properties.
Subjects of Emphasis include: Expressions and Equations, Number Systems 1 (Fractions), Number
Systems 2 (Integers), Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Geometry, and Statistics.
Supplies: Students will be expected to bring their math notebooks, pencil, and IPads to class daily.
Assessment Procedures:
See pages 25-26 in the student handbook for information about standards-based learning, progress
reports, report cards, and feedback about learner behaviors.
Homework is assigned and is important for students to practice, acquire new knowledge, and apply new
skills. The motivation for doing homework should come from each students clear understanding that it
will contribute to their learning, not compliance or grading. Homework will be evaluated but not
included in the final grade.
