India's 1st Nickel Producing Plant by Hindustan Copper

Limited (HCL) inaugurated India's first
facility to produce nickel, a metal for
which the country is completely
dependent on imports. Shri Balvinder
Kumar, the Secretary, Ministry of Mines,
inaugurated this Nickel Copper and Acid
recovery Plant of Hindustan Copper
Limited in Indian Copper Complex,
Ghatsila of Jharkhand. This will be the
first facility in India to produce Nickel
metal of LME-grade from primary
resource.
Meanwhile, Hindustan Copper share price surged up by 6.79 per cent on NSE since this
morning and is currently trading at Rs 62.90.
The capacity of the plant is initially poised to be 50 tonnes annually, given that the current
production rate from the Surda mines. The nickel output however, is expected to increase
nearly eight times after the completion of mine expansion projects located at Ghatsila, the
company said in an official statement. Demand for pure nickel in India is around 45,000 tonnes
per annum and its domestic market is solely reliant on imports.
Incidentally, the Singhbhum Copper Belt has unique ore characteristics which contain
appreciable quantity of nickel. This prompted HCL to install as well as commission the
technology to recover the metal.
The project will utilize eco-friendly technology and help check pollution, eliminate use of lead,
reduce liquid effluents and cut down solid waste by 75 per cent. It will also utilise less energy
along with providing a safe working environment as well as conserving natural resources, the
statement added.
Besides the mines secretary, top officials of HCL who were present at the event included, K D
Diwan, the chairman, Anupam Anand, the director (personnel), V V Venugopal Rao, the

director (finance), S .K. Bhattacharya, the director (mining), Santosh Sharma, the director
(operations), D K Choudhury, the GM, ICC, and Sanjay Singh the DGM(W), ICC.
