i) Structuring an argument
When you write an essay or take part in a discussion, you need to be able to structure your argument. Its
important to know how to:
make points clearly and concisely
identify key points and counter other peoples arguments
justify your opinions
organise your material
use logical paragraphs in your writing.
The AQA A2 written paper (Unit 3) includes an essay (250 words minimum) on one of the cultural topics you
have studied. The highest marks will be awarded for

thorough understanding and knowledge of the task

a wide range of relevant examples and evidence
clear evidence of evaluation and well-justified personal reaction
a well-organised structure with clear progression.

Your studies and revision will address the first two of these bullet points; the second two will require skill and
practice. The same skills are required in the Unit 4 Speaking test.

Make points clearly and concisely

Although it is tempting to show off your knowledge of sophisticated linguistic expressions, this can sometimes
get in the way of making points clearly and may reduce your mark.

Identify key points

Take your time and try to think in terms of separate aspects of your argument. When discussing a cultural topic
you may think in terms of characters, symbols, themes, techniques, historical background, social impact,
universal significance and so on.

Organise your material

Plan your essay/presentation by noting down ideas in the form of headings or bullet points. Dont rush to get
everything out all at once.

Use logical paragraphs in your writing

Your essay should begin with an introduction in which you demonstrate that you have understood the question.
Start a new paragraph for each point you make. Include your personal reaction to each point and give concrete
examples and evidence to justify your reaction in each paragraph. Your conclusion does not have to come down
on one side or the other you can leave it open!

Counter other peoples arguments
Before you can do this you have to understand what objections might be made to your point of view. Part of
your preparation is to try to anticipate and appreciate fully the other side of the argument.
