VASUDHAIVA KUTUMBAKAM
VasudhaivaKutumbakam
(Sanskrit: olq/kSodqVEq cde~ from
"vasudha", the earth; "iva", is

a Sanskrit phrase that means that the whole world
is one single family.
The concept originates in the Vedic scripture Maha

our body made of bones and muscles. The blood
inside is water and veins are rivers controlled by
our nervous system which is sky. We call Chandra

thoughts) and Surya and Aaatmkaraka (soul).

Guru Purnima

19-07-2016

GURU IS BRAHMA, VISHNU AND SHIVA

The Full Moon Day in the month of Ashadha
(July-August) is known as Guru Purnima. This
sacred day marks the very first transmission of the
yogic sciences from Shiva - the Adiyogi or First
Yogi - to the Saptarishis, the seven celebrated sages.
This momentous occasion took place on the banks
of the lake Kantisarovar, which stands a few
kilometers above the Kedarnath Temple in the
Himalayas. Thus, the Adiyogi became the Adi Guru
or the First Guru on this day. The Saptarishis carried
this knowing offered by Adiyogi throughout the
world. Even today, every spiritual process on the
planet draws from the spine of knowing created
by Adiyogi. Guru Purnima day is also termed as
Vyasa Poornima because Guru Veda Vyasa is the
greatest editor and compiler of holy texts in
Hinduism.
What Gurus say about Guru:
Let no man in the world live in delusion.
Without a Guru none can cross over to the other
shore. Guru Nanak
I hang out with my guru in my heart. And I
love everything in the universe. That's all I do all
day. Ram Dass
All of the religions are looking after the poor.
At least leave me alone to look after the rich. I am
the rich man's guru. Rajneesh Osho
My parents being Bengali, we always had
music in our house. My nani was a trained classical
singer, who taught my mum, who, in turn, was my

first teacher. Later I would travel almost 70 kms to

the nearest town, Kota, to learn music from my
guru Mahesh Sharmaji, who was also the principal
of the music college there. Shreya Ghoshal
I never say I am a guru.
I have my own spiritual guru, and I'm so
happy, and I feel so satisfied that I might appreciate
many other famous gurus, but, you know, I am not
attracted that way because I have found the person.
Ravi Shankar
"Let each man take the path according to his
capacity, understanding and temperament. His true
guru will meet him along that path."
Sivananda Saraswati
"In times of tragedies, our duty is to lend a
helping hand to those in grief and thus light lamps
of kindness and compassion."
Amma Sri Mata Amritanandamayi
"The Teacher provides Spiritual Energy! Just
like roots provide nutrients to the flowers!"
Master Choa Kok Sui
Guru is not the goal. Anyone who establishes
himself as a guru to be worshipped is not a guru.
Guru is like a boat for crossing the river. It is
important to have a good boat and it is very
dangerous to have a boat that is leaking. The boat
brings you across the river. When the river is
crossed the boat is no longer necessary. You don't
hang onto the boat after completing the journey,
and you certainly don't worship the boat."
Swami Rama of the Himalayas

Food in this season should be easily digestible
Drink only boiled and filtered water, and make sure
that it is consumed within 24 hours of boiling.
Take fresh and fresh prepared food and in little

Use kitchen spices in food to correct your digestive
fire
Garlic, pepper, ginger, asafetida (hing), jeera powder, turmeric and coriander help enhance digestion

(Contd. From back issue)

INTRODUCTION TO SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA

(based on Sankara's Introduction)
Braahmanaas play the role of repositories of
knowledge. They collect, develop and distribute
knowledge in the society. People who are
aggressive and full of valor naturally become
Kshatriyaas. Kshatriyaas handle power and provide
security to the society from internal and external
disturbing forces. People who are industrious and
have a lot of skill and ingenuity become Vaisyaas.
Vaisyaas create wealth in the society by agriculture,
industry and trade. People who are unskilled but
full of loyalty, who need assistance from others by
means of direction of what to do, form the Sudraas.
They work under the leadership and guidance of
Braahmanaas, Kshatriyaas and Vaisyaas. This
division was purely based on inner nature and
external role in the society. Later it tended towards
heredity and slowly petrified to today's status.
Sri Krishna (and thus the Gita and the Vedaas) does
not condemn the pravritti maarga (way of active
performance of work) or the nivritti maarga (way
of renunciation of work). Both are needed for the
functioning of the society. They contribute to
prosperity and emancipation of the society
respectively. However for an individual, these are
considered as stages in the spiritual path.
Everyone seeks happiness by means of three things
in life - security, pleasure and peace. The innate
urge to exist and not to die is expressed in various
ways as the sense of security. This is called artha.
The innate urge to enjoy sense objects is expressed
as a seeking after pleasure. This is called kaama.
Unbridled pursuit of artha and kaama by every
individual in the society will create two problems.
One person's pursuit of artha and kaama will
interfere with another's. Also, the individual's
excessive pursuit and indulgence can become
unsustainable to himself. To avoid these two
problems, restrictions are brought in. This
restriction to the pursuit and indulgence of artha
and kaama, to ensure fair share and sustainability
to everyone, is called dharma. Dharma results in
peace.
(to be contd)

Having created the cosmos and seeking to ensure

its existence, the Lord brought forth in the
beginning the Prajaapatis (progenitors) - Marichi
and the rest. Then he imparted to them the Vedic
path of work - pravritti lakshanam dharmam
(Karma Yoga). Later, bringing forth the Kumaras Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanaatana and Sanatkumaara,
He imparted to them the path of renunciation of
work - nivritti lakshanam dharmam (Jnaana Yoga),
marked by jnaana (knowledge) and vairaagya
(renunciation). This two-fold path (dharma) of the
Vedaas makes for the world's stability. For
prosperity and emancipation, people of different
natures should follow this path with faith according
to their varna (role in society) and aashrama (stage
in life).
Due to the lapse of long periods of time, the
practitioners of the dharma came to be dominated
by cravings. By the lack of discriminative
knowledge, adharma (lawlessness) came to
dominate dharma (righteousness). Therefore, with
a view to ensuring the well being of the world, the
primal and all-pervading Agent, celebrated as a
Naaraayana, is held to have born of Vasudeva from
Devaki's womb by an aspect of Himself as Krishna
in order to safeguard the spiritual power in the
world. Once the dominance of spirituality is
assured, the survival of the Vedic dharma is
guaranteed, which is supported by people doing
their duties according to their varna (role in society)
and aashrama (stage in life).
Varna should not be confused with the jaati (caste
based on birth) of today. Krishna tells "chaatur
varnyam mayaa strustam guna karma
vibhaagasaha" (4.13). Varna is based on guna (inner
nature) and karma (work or role in society). He
also describes how the four varnas have been
allocated different works based on their inner
nature in 18.41. This is not jaati.
A part of the society lives by the active performance
of work. People who are calm, introvert and
thoughtful by nature become Braahmanaas.

VASTU TIPS FOR BEDROOM

Vastu Shashtra is considered a sacred science

that helps people live a stress-free life. People have
relied on Vastu for centuries for living in perfect
harmony and keeping problems at an arm's length.
It is even more important for your bedroom, where
you retire to escape from the worries of the world
and have a tension-free sleep. In context of
bedroom, Vastu takes into consideration different
determinants to ensure harmony in the house. The
main things that become important, while
constructing and designing
bedrooms, are location,
placement of bed, color scheme,
direction and placement of
doors, windows, and furniture,
set up of electronic gadgets, etc.
Let us explore the basic Vastu
guidelines that have to be
followed, in case of the
bedroom.
Vastu Tips For Bedroom
For ensuring peace in the house, the main
bedroom should be constructed in the south,
south west direction.
While placing the bed, make sure that you keep
it in such a way that the occupant sleeps with
his/her head pointing towards the south.
Having the head in the north direction should be
completely avoided, while sleeping, as it acts as
a source of nightmares and disturbed sleep.
If you want to have a bookshelf in your bedroom,
west or southwest corner is the, as per the Vastu
guidelines for a bedroom.
For constructing the master bedroom, southwest
direction is just perfect. Other bedrooms can be
constructed on the eastern or northern side of
the master bedroom.
Square and rectangle shape bedrooms are just
perfect for ensuring peace and prosperity in the
house. Irregular shapes should be completely
avoided.
The bedroom door should open at least ninety
degrees, to fully allow positive opportunities to

,LVkseSfVDl

15

flow to you. This is because the door of your

bedroom is symbolic of the opportunities life
presents you. A door that cannot open fully will
limit the support and prospects life has to offer
you.
The first thing that you see when you enter your
bedroom should give you the feeling of
peacefulness and serenity. Such feelings can be
enhanced by a photograph, inspiring quote,
painting, sculpture or even flowers. Locate these
things at such a place that the
moment you enter your
bedroom, your gaze falls on
them.

Don't place your bedroom

mirror on the wall opposite your
bed, as it disturbs sleep. At such
a position, the mirror reflects
your image and holds back your
stress, rather than allowing you to throw it off.
Remove clutter from under you bed, as it keeps
your mind lingering in the past and hinders future
progress. Wherever clutter exists, you life energy
becomes stagnant. Clutter is symbolic of all that
has not been completed in your life. It will also
not allow you to have a sound sleep, as it disturbs
your subconscious mind.
Don't sleep in direct alignment with sharp
corners. This can create stress in your nervous
system. In a room that has sharp corners, you
will never be able to experience peace, unless
you soften them by placing plants in front. Also,
move your bed away from direct alignment with
them.
The Vastu colors ideal for your bedroom are soft
pastel shades of blue, green and off white. Avoid
using dark and excessively bright colors in your
bedroom.
Vastu Shastra rejects the idea of keeping an
aquarium in the bedroom. It is believed that if
they live there, they will attract material loss
Avoid placing divine idols in the bedroom. The
best place for them is your pooja room.

Yoga

Management of Back Pain

Swami Bhaktipoornananda Saraswati

Contd. from previous issue

Acute pain
If we are in an acute phase of pain, then exercise is
not appropriate. At this stage we need rest and then
mobilization of the joints. Acute pain needs rest and
I do mean rest - not watching the TV or reading, but
the deep healing rest of yoga nidra and prana nidra,
plus meditation practices with movement of
awareness in the frontal passage or along the spine
with breath and/or mantra. Complementary therapies
may be useful (osteopathy, physiotherapy or similar
bodywork). Then exercise is phased in as therapy
phases out. We can assist in this process with gentle
loosening and massage of the affected areas using
practices like 'pelvic rocking' and 'rocking and
rolling'. If medication is used to dull the pain, then it
is not advisable to do any body movements like these
until the medication has worn off.
Chronic pain
Chronic pain can be constant or recurring. It can seem
to move around or always come from one area. It
can be hot, burning, stabbing, knife-like, or cold,
aching or dragging. We need to discover if it is
referred pain (visceral pain) which can come from
the liver (usually experienced around the right
shoulder blade) or menstrual (usually worse before
or during the monthly bleed). If so, add the
appropriate practices for the liver and endocrine
system respectively, such as twisting and sideways
bends for the liver and surya namaskara (salute to
the sun) for endocrine (see also Asana, Pranayama,
Mudra, Bandha - Bihar School of Yoga).
Whether pain is acute or chronic, we also need
practices to help us to attune to the mental and
emotional stuff that always accompanies pain. When
we have pain, we react on all levels of our being.
In physical pain there is:
mental reaction: judgement (e.g. 'good' pain when
we have a massage, 'bad' pain when we are
incapacitated in some way), memory and
comparison;
emotional reaction - dislike, anger, annoyance;
physical reaction to protect the area of 'bad' pain.
Similarly when we have emotional pain, e.g. grief or
anger, we have mental and physical reactions.
Back pain is seen mostly as a reflection of deep
subconscious or unconscious beliefs and
conditioning. Writers like Louise Hay have even
pinpointed how different parts of the back reflect
different issues. This came home to me loud and clear
when I met a man with multiple sclerosis which only
affected his body below the 12th thoracic vertebra.
His father was super critical of his actions. Criticism

,LVkseSfVDl

is seen as affecting the joint between the 12th thoracic

and the 1st lumbar vertebra. I realized that if he was
to gain any notable remission, first he would have to
deal with his reactions to the criticism he received
from his father.
Before examining the mental and emotional aspects
of pain and how to deal with them through yoga we
need to examine posture and the common patterns
of imbalance. Regular practice of hatha yoga can help
to correct poor patterns of posture that created the
tiny injuries which led to back pain.
Postural patterns
Regular practice of hatha yoga can help to correct
poor patterns of posture that have created the tiny
injuries which led to back pain. Different postural
problems require a different emphasis in exercise.
Lordosis is a forward curving of the spine found in
the lower back (sway back) or neck. Kyphosis is an
exaggerated forward curve of the thoracic spine. A
lordosis of the lower back is often accompanied by a

kyphosis of the thoracic spine (round shoulders) and

a lordosis of the neck. Scoliosis is a sideways curve,
'C' or 'S' shaped when viewed from behind. Many
people have a 'short leg' or a flattened back in the
lumbar region. These too have their own patterns of
wear and tear and pain.
Role of exercise in correcting posture
Exercises are done to address the structural problems
in the joints and the spine as a whole. They can be
therapeutic or preventative. They keep the muscles
in good tone and prevent contraction, so that the
muscles can allow complete movement and
lubrication of the joints. Tone is the amount of tension
in a muscle when it is at rest. The more tone there is,
the less you can extend it, so a muscle that is highly
toned becomes shorter. It may appear strong, but it
can't let go and release to a full stretch. The joint
consequently cannot go through its full range of
movements. Conversely, the weaker muscles become
longer. Paired muscles become of equal length and
equal strength. For example, with the elbow joint, if
weight lifters do more work with the muscles that
bend the elbow than with those that straighten it, they
will eventually not be able to straighten the elbow
completely.
