Inthiscoursestudentswillincreasetheirglobalperspectivethroughthestudyofissuesthat
affectpeopleoforfromcountriesotherthantheUnitedStatesofAmerica.

Asitisinthenatureofanycourseinsocialstudies(thestudyofsocialrelationshipsandthe
functioningofsociety:history,government,economics,civics,sociology,geography,and
anthropology),wewillbeexamininganddiscoveringissuesthatmaytouchuponorinvolve
controversialissuesandtopics.IfIdeemitparticularlyappropriateandifIcananticipatethe
discussionofsuchcontroversialissuesandtopics,Iwillprovideyouandyourguardian(s)prior

Avarietyofresourcesontheinternetwillsupportyourlearninginthiscourse.Youare
expectedtomakefulluseoftheseresources,logininfrequentlyandcheckforupdates.Ifyou
donothaveaccesstoacomputerorinternet,aCampbellHighSchoollaptopwillbeavailable
foryouruseduringschoolhours.Theinternetacceptableusepolicyisoutlinedinthestudent

ATTENDANCEPROCEDURES:
Punctualattendanceineveryclasssessionisrequired.
Classroomattendanceisnotlefttothediscretionofthestudent.Itisunderstoodthatastudent
willbepresentinclassexceptforlegitimatereasons.Explanationsfortardinessorabsences
areexpectedimmediatelyafterreturning.Tardinessandunexcusedabsenceswillberecorded.
Theattendanceandtardypolicyisdetailedinthestudentplanner.
ParentsaretonotifytheAttendanceClerkofabsencesbyatelephonecallorbywritten
notewithintwodaysuponthestudentsreturntoschool.Thetelephonenumberis

Anabsencewithoutawrittennoteortelephonecallwithintwo(2)schooldayswillbe
regardedasanunexcusedabsence.

Tardystudentswillnotbeadmittedtoclasswithoutavalidpass.Chronictardinesswill
resultinAfterSchoolDetention,SaturdaySchoolDetention,orSuspension.
PLAGIARISM:
Plagiarismisacademicdishonestystealingandcheating.Plagiarismistheinappropriateuse
ofsomeoneelseswrittenwork.Forexample:
1) copyingsomeoneelsesideasandanswersonatestorquiz
2) givingorreceivinginformationonexamsoutsidetheclassroom
3) directlycopyinganswersfromatext.Youmustciteyousources
Plagiarismwillnotbetolerated.Evidenceofplagiarismwillresultinazeroforthat
assignmentand,dependingontheweightoftheassignmentinthefinalgrade,probable
failureofthecourse.
LATEWORK:
Makeeveryefforttoturnworkinontime!Icannotstressthisenough.Scholarshipandcollege
deadlinesare irm,andwillnotbeacceptedbytheagencyorcollegeafterthedeadline.Late
workwillbepenalizedandwillnotbeeligibleforgradeshigherthan3.0onthe4.0scalebelow.

YourFinalGradeinthisclasswillbedeterminedasfollows:
AsthisisanupperlevelJuniorandSeniorclass,afewassignmentsatthestartofthetermmay
beformativeinnaturetoassistinmyevaluationofstudentgrowth.However,because
studentsareexpectedtohavemasteredbothcriticalreadingandargumentative(persuasive)
