COURSEDESCRIPTION:
Inthiscoursestudentswillincreasetheirhistoricalperspectivethroughthestudyofissues
thataffectpeopleoftheUnitedStatesofAmerica.

Asitisinthenatureofanycourseinsocialstudies(thestudyofsocialrelationshipsandthe
functioningofsociety:history,government,economics,civics,sociology,geography,and
anthropology),wewillbeexamininganddiscoveringissuesthatmaytouchuponorinvolve
controversialissuesandtopics.IfIdeemitparticularlyappropriateandifIcananticipatethe
discussionofsuchcontroversialissuesandtopics,Iwillprovideyouandyourguardian(s)prior
requestandseekwrittenconsenttocontinueourexploration.Ilookforwardtochallengingyouin

TEXTS:
Classmaterialswillnotbederivedfromanyonesourceortextbook.Studentsshouldbe
preparedtobeexposedtoandtobeabletosynthesizeissuesfromabroadandpossibly
internationalselectionofreadingandwriting.Itistheintentofthiscoursetomakeeach
studentattentivetosocialstudiesdisciplinesincludingbutnotlimitedtothoseidentiiedinthe
HawaiiContent&PerformanceIIIDatabase(HCPSIII):globalinterdependence(Standard1);
conlictresolution(Standard2);socialjustice(Standard3);culturalinteractionsand
perceptions(Standard4);largescalechangeandfutureimpact(Standard5).Accordingly,we
willchallengeourselvesinacademicrealmsofgeography,history,politicalscience,psychology,
sociology,andeconomics.

TECHNOLOGYANDINTERNETACCESS:
Avarietyofresourcesontheinternetwillsupportyourlearninginthiscourse.Youare
expectedtomakefulluseoftheseresources,logininfrequentlyandcheckforupdates.Ifyou
donothaveaccesstoacomputerorinternet,aCampbellHighSchoollaptopwillbeavailable
foryouruseduringschoolhours.Theinternetacceptableusepolicyisoutlinedinthestudent
planner.AnyuserwhodoesnotcomplywiththeInternetUsePoliciesandGuidelineswilllose
networkprivilegesforaperiodofnotlessthanoneweek.

ATTENDANCEPROCEDURES:
Punctualattendanceineveryclasssessionisrequired.
Classroomattendanceisnotlefttothediscretionofthestudent.Itisunderstoodthatastudent
willbepresentinclassexceptforlegitimatereasons.Explanationsfortardinessorabsences
areexpectedimmediatelyafterreturning.Tardinessandunexcusedabsenceswillberecorded.
Theattendanceandtardypolicyisdetailedinthestudentplanner.

ParentsaretonotifytheAttendanceClerkofabsencesbyatelephonecallorbywritten
notewithintwodaysuponthestudentsreturntoschool.Thetelephonenumberis

Anabsencewithoutawrittennoteortelephonecallwithintwo(2)schooldayswillbe
regardedasanunexcusedabsence.

Absencesofmorethanthree(3)daysrequireanotefromadoctor/dentist/court.

Tardystudentswillnotbeadmittedtoclasswithoutavalidpass.Chronictardinesswill
resultinAfterSchoolDetention,SaturdaySchoolDetention,orSuspension.

PLAGIARISM:
Plagiarismisacademicdishonestystealingandcheating.Plagiarismistheinappropriateuse
ofsomeoneelseswrittenwork.Forexample:
1) copyingsomeoneelsesideasandanswersonatestorquiz
2) givingorreceivinginformationonexamsoutsidetheclassroom
3) directlycopyinganswersfromatext.Youmustciteyousources
Plagiarismwillnotbetolerated.Evidenceofplagiarismwillresultinazeroforthat
assignmentand,dependingontheweightoftheassignmentinthefinalgrade,probable
failureofthecourse.

LATEWORK:
Makeeveryefforttoturnworkinontime!Icannotstressthisenough.Scholarshipandcollege
deadlinesareirm,andwillnotbeacceptedbytheagencyorcollegeafterthedeadline.Late
workwillbepenalizedandwillnotbeeligibleforgradeshigherthan3.0onthe4.0scalebelow.

GRADING:
YourFinalGradeinthisclasswillbedeterminedasfollows:

AsthisisanupperlevelJuniorandSeniorclass,afewassignmentsatthestartofthetermmay
beformativeinnaturetoassistinmyevaluationofstudentgrowth.However,because
studentsareexpectedtohavemasteredbothcriticalreadingandargumentative(persuasive)

summativeassessmentswillallowustoengageinthoughtfulessays,welldeliveredoral
