Course Description:
The continued development of spelling, reading, writing, listening, speaking and
critical thinking skills will be emphasized. This course focuses on the art of written and oral
communication.

standard written English.

text.

Assessment/Grading Policy:
50% Tests and Papers
30% Quizzes
20% Homework and Class Work
**There will be a Mid-term and a Final exam. Each will count as two test grades**
Classroom Procedures/Requirements:
Students must bring the appropriate text and a writing utensil daily as well as keep a
notebook, which will be graded at the end of each grading quarter. Homework is due the
next day when assigned. Unexcused late homework will not be accepted. A Paper or Project
received late will incur a 10 pt penalty every day it is late. Students are responsible for any
makeup work, tests, or quizzes after absences from school. Extra help is available to any
student needing clarification through an appointment with the teacher. Extra preparation
needed for MCAS can be arranged with advance notice.
Students are required to write MLA style research papers. Students are responsible
for the integrity of all papers written for class. All papers must be saved to a disk or hard
drive. Subsequently, students are also responsible for properly citing sources used in writing
papers. If the teacher questions documentation on any paper written to meet course
requirements, the teacher may request that the student submit the paper on a floppy disc or on
a CD ROM within three (3) days. Failure to do so will result in a zero grade (0) for that
paper. See rules concerning plagiarism in the STUDENT HANDBOOK.
No extra credit is available in order to pass for the year. Students must complete all
required work. Extra credit may be given by the teacher in order that students may earn extra
points on tests and/or quizzes.

2. Keep cell phones and other electrical devices out of sight. Do not use them in
school.
