Unison Scripture
ACTS 8:26-40 (nRSV)
Then an angel of the Lord said to
Philip, Get up and go toward the
south to the road that goes down
from Jerusalem to Gaza. (This is a
wilderness road.) 27So he got up and
went. Now there was an Ethiopian
eunuch, a court official of the
Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in
charge of her entire treasury. He had
come to Jerusalem to worship 28and
was returning home; seated in his
chariot, he was reading the prophet
Isaiah. 29Then the Spirit said to Philip,
Go over to this chariot and join it.
30
So Philip ran up to it and heard
him reading the prophet Isaiah. He
asked, Do you understand what you
are reading? 31He replied, How
can I, unless someone guides me?
And he invited Philip to get in and sit
beside him. 32Now the passage of the
scripture that he was reading was
this:
26

open his mouth. 33In his humiliation

justice was denied him. Who can
describe his generation? For his life
is taken away from the earth. 34The
eunuch asked Philip, About whom,
may I ask you, does the prophet say
this, about himself or about someone
else? 35Then Philip began to speak,
and starting with this scripture, he
proclaimed to him the good news
about Jesus.

As they were going along the road,

they came to some water; and the
eunuch said, Look, here is water!
What is to prevent me from being
baptized? 38He commanded the
chariot to stop, and both of them,
Philip and the eunuch, went down
into the water, and Philip baptized
him. 39When they came up out of the
water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched
Philip away; the eunuch saw him no
more, and went on his way rejoicing.
40
But Philip found himself at Azotus,
and as he was passing through the
region, he proclaimed the good news
Like a sheep he was led to the to all the towns until he came to
slaughter, and like a lamb silent Caesarea.

To Do Justice
Family,
Our activists need us!
During the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan one of
the devices used by our military and intelligence
agencies, when dealing with captured enemy
combatants, was the use of black sites. These
were un-official locations, often in friendly
countries, where the normal rules of military
conduct, or even constitutional protections, had
no standing, and these individuals were subject
to beatings and torture.
Little did we know that these tactics were also
being used right here in Chicago . . .
In our midst the Chicago Police Department
runs a black site right here in the city, known
as Homan Square. According to reporting by
The Guardian more than 7,000 people have
been disappeared into this interrogation
warehouse, with no official record of their being
held (see story tinyurl.com/CPSHoman). From
August 2004 to June 2015, nearly 6,000 of those
held at the facility were black . . . only 68 of
those held were allowed access to attorneys or
a public notice of their whereabouts, internal
police records show.1

To Do Justice
About 4 weeks ago, the Let Us Breathe Collective, ByP100, neighborhood organizers,
students, and other justice organizers, decided to shine a light on this dark situation by
establishing an ongoing protest site they call Freedom Square. Kitty-corner to the police
facility, they have established Freedom Square, an encampment a tent city at Homan
Ave. and Filmore Street, which they say will remain until the Blue Lives Matter bill (that
makes animosity or hostility toward a first responder a hate crime) has been rescinded,
and Homan Square has been shut down.

over the course of the summer and fall, please continue to encourage and support
Freedom Square by visiting and dropping off supplies to these frontline activists. Any of
the items below will be welcomed:
Charcoal and lighter fluid (they cook all
meals on site using grills)
Bottled water
Bags of ice
Book bags and school supplies
(surprisingly, there were a lot of
children)
Bleach
Dishwashing liquid

Healthy snacks
Juice (non-refrigerated)
Toiletries: Toothpaste and
toothbrushes, deodorant, toilet paper,
etc.
Over-the-counter medical supplies:
Band-Aids, antibacterial cream,
aspirin, Tylenol, etc.

Thank you all, in advance, for your support.

2016 Churchwide Theme

and Scriptures
Theme: The Fruit of The Spirit:
Taste and See!
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our
lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is
no law against these things!
Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

January Love

He answered, You shall love the Lord your God

with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with
all your strength, and with all your mind; and your
neighbor as yourself. Luke 10:27 (NRSV)

February Joy

Nehemiah said, Go and enjoy good food and

sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none,
because today is a holy day to the Lord. Dont be
sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you
strong. Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV)

March Peace

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called

children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV)

April Patience

Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall

strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!
Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

July Faithfulness

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, You

are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my
teachings. And you will know the truth, and the
truth will set you free. John 8:31-32 (NLT)

August Gentleness

By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to

youI, Paul, who am timid when face to face with
you, but bold toward you when away! I beg you
that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I
expect to be toward some people who think that
we live by the standards of this world. For though
we live in the world, we do not wage war as the
world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV)

September Self Control

So prepare your minds for action and exercise selfcontrol. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation
that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed
to the world. So you must live as Gods obedient
children. Dont slip back into your old ways of living
to satisfy your own desires. You didnt know any
better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

October Forgive One Another

May Kindness

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words,

and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted,
forgiving one another, just as God through Christ
has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT)

June Goodness

My brothers and sisters, God called you to be free,

but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do
what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with
love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV)

This is what the Lord of Heavens Armies says:

Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to
one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans,
foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against
each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT)
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let
them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the
humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor
bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do
not boast about it or deny the truth.
James 3:13-14 (NIV)

November Service One Another

December Build Up One Another

So encourage each other and build each other up,

just as you are already doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)
