PROBLEMS
Mixture, Compound, and Elements (Section 3-1)
1. In one sentence, state the difference between a mixture and a compound.
Answer: A compound is a single, pure substance, whereas a mixture is a combination of
two or more substances.
2. In one sentence, state the difference between a compound and element.
Answer: A compound is a pure substance that can be decomposed into elements, an
element is a substance that cant be decomposed into simpler substances.
3. Decide weather each of the following mixtures is homogeneous or heterogeneous: a. tea
(the liquid) borange juice c. vinegar
Answer: a. Tea is homogeneous- it is uniform throughout.
bOrange juice is heterogeneous- we can usually see pulp in it.
c. Vinegar is homogeneous- it is unuform throughout.
4. Decide weather each of the following mixtures is homogeneous or heterogeneous: a. salt
ba mixture of salt and pepper c. concrete
Answer : a. Salt is homogeneous
bA mixture of salt and pepper is heterogeneous
c. Concrete is heterogeneous
5. When limestone a white solid is heated to a high temperature, it changes into another
white solid and a gas. From this evidence would you classify limestone as a compound or
an element? Explain.
Answer : If limestone were an element, it would not decompose into two different
substances on heating. Limestone must be a compound.
6. When iron is heated, it doesnt change into other substances and when its melted and an
electric current is passed through it, no change occurs. From this evidence would you
classify iron as a compound or an element? Explain.
Answer : Iron is an element, because iron cant be decomposed into other substances.
States of Matter and Phases (Section 3-2)
7. If a piece of iron were heated to higher and higher temperature, what changes of state
would you expect it to undergo?
Answer : increasing the temperature of a piece of solid iron would change it to its liquid
form (melting) and would eventually change it to its gaseous form (boiling).
8. If a sample of nitrogen gas from the athmosphere were cooled to lower and lower
temperatures, what changes of state would you expect it to undergo?
Answer : decreasing the temperature (cooled) of nitrogen gas would change it to its
liquid form.
9. Imagine a piece of wood floating on water. Including the air above the wood and water,
how many states of matter are present? How many phases?
Answer : All three states of matter are present : solid, wood, liquid water, and gaseous
air. The wood is a solid phase, the water is a liquid phase, and the air (and water vapor) is
a gas phase.
10. Imagine that you stir a teaspoonful of sugar into a cup of water and watch it dissolve.
Before the sugar dissolves, how many states of matter are present? How many phases?
After the sugar dissolves, how many states of matter are present? How many phases?
Answer : all two states of matter are present, liquid water and solid sugar. After the sugar
dissolves, the two phases become one, that is liquid phase (the mixture of sugar and
water)
