EIE205 INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION

Course Prerequisites: EIE203


Objectives:
To develop a better understanding of various sensors & instrumentation system applications
in industrial monitoring and control.
To provide a good design level understanding of industrial measurement systems.
To understand the instrumentation methods available to monitor and control process
variables like temperature, pressure flow & level.
Expected Outcome:
Understand the methods of instrumentation for various parameters
Will be able to design the industrial measurement system
This course meets the following student outcomes
a. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
b. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
c. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
d. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
e. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for
engineering practice.
Unit I
Force, Torque and Velocity
6 Hours
Electric balance Different types of load cells Magnets Elastic load cells - Strain gauge load
cell Different methods of torque measurement Strain gauge, relative regular twist Speed
measurement Revolution counter Capacitive tacho-drag cup type tacho D.C and A.C tacho
generators Stroboscope.
Unit II
Pressure Measurement
10 Hours
Units of pressure manometers different types elastic type pressure gauges Bourdon tubes,
bellows, diaphragms Electrical methods elastic elements with LVDT and strain gauges
capacitive type pressure gauge piezo resistive pressure sensor resonator pressure sensor
measurement of vacuum McLeod gauge pirani gauge - thermal conductivity gauges
Ionization gauge cold cathode and hot cathode types dead weight tester.
Unit III
Flow meters
10 Hours
Basic terms, pressure gradient techniques, Positive displacement flow meters turbine flow
meter Rotameter: Design and datasheet interpretation Coriolis mass flow meters thermal
mass flow meter volume flow meter. Electrical type flow meter: Electromagnetic flow meter,
different types of ultrasonic flow meters laser doppler anemometer systems vortex shedding
flow meter target flow meter solid flow rate measurement.
Level Measurement
10 Hours
Unit IV
Basic terms, Direct level sensing devices -Gauge glass technique level switches level
measurement using displacer and torque tube bubbler system. Boiler drum level measurement
differential pressure method hydra step systems electrical types of level gauges using
resistance, capacitance, nuclear radiation and ultrasonic sensors.

Unit V
Temperature Measurement
9 Hours
Basic terms, bimetallic thermometers Thermoresistive sensors: RTDs and their characteristics
3 lead and 4 lead RTDs and Thermistor, Data sheet interpretation- Thermocouples
fabrication of industrial thermocouples signal conditioning of thermocouple output, Design
and commercial circuits for cold junction compensation. Data sheet interpretation, Radiation
methods of temperature measurement: radiation fundamentals total radiation and selective
radiation pyrometers optical pyrometer. Sources of errors and their compensation.
