Classes are taught in English. However, students
who are proficient in the German language may
choose additional electives taught in German in
the second and third semesters. Although the
programme is taught in English, part of the
programme is German language classes.
Knowledge of the German language will help the
students during daily life and offers an
additional useful skill for their future. The first
two semesters are accompanied by German
language classes.

Course content
Computational Mechanics of Materials and
Structures is concerned with the simulation of
advanced engineering problems using modelling
techniques, computer implementation,
experimental verification and case study
investigation. This Master of Science
programme provides a basis in high-tech
engineering design for a broad spectrum of
applications.
This rapidly expanding area of science has
engendered a great many research activities
and is accompanied by strong international
collaborations.
Graduates of this unique Master's programme
will be qualified to find employment in a wide
range of professions, e.g. as research and
development engineers or technical consultants
and managers in industry, at laboratories or
universities.
The Master's programme attracts people who
already have finished other studies and wish to
gain expertise in the fertile field of
computational mechanics of materials and
structures.
Educational
organisation
The Master of Science programme is four
semesters long. During the first semester, all
students take the same modules and courses
and concentrate on the basics of mechanics,
statics and dynamics, numerical methods,
discretisation methods and software
engineering.
All courses not only provide an extensive
introduction but also a deep knowledge of the
most important areas in the field of
computational mechanics of materials and
structures.
During the second and third semesters, subjects
can be chosen from a large variety of courses.
In order to establish and promote international
interaction, further advanced subjects are
delivered in summer school by internationally
recognised experts.
The fourth semester is dedicated to the thesis. It
is embedded into the current scientific activities
of the participating research groups.
On successful completion of the programme
(120 ECTS credits), students are awarded a
Master of Science and will be entitled to
continue to study for a doctoral degree without
having to meet additional academic
requirements. Special PhD programmes in this
field are offered at the Universitt Stuttgart.

About the city
The city of Stuttgart, with about 600,000
inhabitants, is the state capital of BadenWrttemberg. Situated in the valley of the River
Neckar, between the hills of the Swabian Alb
and the Black Forest, it is often called "the city
between forests and vineyards". A large number
of cultural highlights are to be found in the city,
including the State Opera, the famous ballet
founded by John Cranko, theatres, concert and
musical halls, art galleries, and various
museums. The Stuttgart region is one of
Europe's strongest high-tech regions specialised in industries such as car
manufacturing, environmental technologies,
machine tools, electronics, information and
communication technology. Many internationally
renowned companies such as Bosch, Daimler,
Porsche and IBM Germany have their
headquarters and factories in the greater
Stuttgart region. In addition, numerous smaller
companies producing machine tools, textiles,
precision instruments, and luxury items are
located here.
