ELECTRICAL MACHINES

LABORATORY
GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1) Never work alone in the laboratory
2) Dont touch any terminal or switch without ensuring that it
is dead.
3) Keep away from all moving parts as far as possible.
4) Never wear loose dress while working in the laboratory.
Pants and shirts are the approved dress in the
laboratories. Dhotis, pyjamas, chooridars, neckties etc.
should not be used.
5) Lady students should keep their hair tied up.
6) Bangles and long neck chains should not be used in the
electrical laboratory.
7) Shoes with nailed soles should not be worn. Always wear
shoes with rubbersole.
8) Use fuse wire/MCB of proper rating only.
9) Use sufficiently long connecting wires rather than joining
two or three small wires. Open joints are dangerous.
10)
Make sure that the electrical connections are right and
tight.
11)
The circuit should be switched off before changing
any connection.
12)
Be familiarized with the shock-chart instructions.

ELECTRICAL MACHINES
LABORATORY
GENERAL RULES
1) Be alert and maintain utmost discipline in the laboratory.
2) Every student should have a rough record. All details (aim,
circuit diagram, instruments required. Necessary tabulation,
steps for calculation and expected curves) pertaining to the
experiment of the days work must be written in the same.
3) Complete specifications of the machines and equipments to
be used in the experiment should be noted down from the
nameplate of the respective equipment. The range of all
instruments to be used in the experiment is to be decided in
accordance with the specifications noted. Special care
should be taken to see the upper as well as lower limits
of voltage ,current, power, speed etc.
4) Show the rough record and get the teachers consent after
thorough explanation of the procedure of the experiment.
5) Fill the indent slip and get the instruments from the counter.
6) Ensure that the instruments received are of the proper
rating and type.
7) Handle all theinstruments with care.
8) Suitable sizes of wires should be used for different parts of
the circuit. For example, flexible wiresmay be used for
connecting voltmeter and pressure coil of wattmeters since
current is negligible. Thicker wires of sufficient crosssection should be used for the other parts of the circuit.
9) Keep all the meter/instruments used for the experiment in
their proper position.
10) The supply to any electric circuit should be switched on only
after ensuring the correctness of connection. Get the

connections checked by a teachers before switching on the

supply.
11) Never apply full voltage to a motor at the time of starting
unless the motor of small rating. Use proper starting device
(stater or a variac)
12) Whenever an electrical load is to be applied, it has to be
gradually. Similarly switch off the load only gradually.
13) Any live terminal should not be touched while the supply
is ON.
14) If you notice anything unusual with the operation of the
machine, call the instructor immediately.
15) During load test, in the case of machines with brake drum,
cool the drum using water occasionally.
16) Get the readings certified by the teacher before dismanting
the connections.
17) Notify the damage caused to instrument/equipment,if any.
18) Ensure that all instruments are returned before leaving the
laboratory.
