TheAmericanHeartAssociationisdedicatedtocombatingheartdiseaseandstroke.Theyfund
innovativeresearch,fightforstrongerhealthpolicies,providecriticaltoolsandinformationto
saveandimprovelives,andtheyaretheworldsoldestandlargestvoluntaryhealth
organization.Aspartoftheirfightagainstheartdisease,AHAiscommittedtoeducatingthe
publicbyprovidingsciencebasedtreatmentguidelinestocliniciansandpublishingkeyresearch
inmedicaljournals.TheAmericanHeartAssociationpledgestotakeactionwiththreatstoa
healthylifestyleandmakingaplantoimprovecardiovascularhealthintheentirenation.

Opportunity/Problem

AmericanHeartAssociationiskickstartingtheirnewcampaigninspiringhearthealthforcollege
students.CentralMichiganUniversitywillplayhosttothebeginningoftheirnewcampaign.
EveryCMUundergraduatestudentislookingtoliveahealthierlifestyle.However,becauseof
thelackofnutritiousoptionsindininghallsandtheeverydaystressorspresentatalltime,living
healthyisalwaysachallenge.

SupportingResearch

IntheInternationalReviewJournalaboutAdvancesinNutrition,morethanhalfofyoungadults
todayaged1824yearshaveatleastonecoronaryheartdiseaseriskfactorandonequarter
haveadvancedatheroscleroticlesions.Unhealthydietarychoicesmadebythisagegroup
directlycorrelatetoweightgainanddyslipidemia.Mostyoungadultsarenotscreenedandare
unawareoftheirrisk(Arts,Fernandez&Lofgren,2014).

IntheAmericanJournalofHealthStudies,collegestudentsexperiencestressrelatedto
academics,finances,timemanagement,healthandselfimposedstress.Academicisthetop
stressorlinkingtothestudentsperceptionoftheextensiveknowledgebaserequiredandthe
perceptionoftimetodevelopit.Thegreatestsourceofacademicstressresultsfromtakingand
studyingforexams,gradecompetitionandthelargeamountofmaterialtomasterinasmall
timeframe.Whenstressbecomesexcessive,studentsexperiencephysicalandpsychological
impairment(Misra&McKean,2000).

TheCollegeStudentJournalexaminedthedifferentstressorsbetweenmalesandfemalesand
facultyandstudentperceptionsofstudentsacademicstress.Femalesexperiencedhigher
levelsofselfimposed,frustration,orpressurerelatedstressthanmales.Themostcommon
reactionamongallstudentswasemotional(fear,anxiety,worry,anger,guilt,grief,or
depression)andcognitivereactions(i.e.theirappraisalofstressfulsituationsandstrategies)
(Misra,McKean,West&Russo,2000).

AccordingtotheAmericanCollegeHealthJournal,57percentofmaleand61percentoffemale
collegestudentsreportedthattheyperformednovigorousormoderateexerciseatleastthree

daysaweek.Thedeclineinphysicalactivityinyoungadultsisarapidlygrowingtrendand
pervasivehealthconcern.Physicalinactivityhasbeenassociatedwiththeriskofseveral
chronicdiseasesandhealthconditions.Studiesshowthatthetypicalcollegestudentspends30
hoursperweekstudying,buttheyalsoindicatedthatmoststudentsengageinadequatelevels
ofmoderateactivitygreaterthan,orequalto,fivedaysperweekandlevelsofvigorousactivity
werereportedasgreaterthanorequaltothreedaysperweek(Buckworth&Nigg,2010).

Arecentstudyonalcoholdrinkingamongcollegestudentsandtheresponsibilityforpersonal
troublesfoundthatonaverageofthe7,015studentssurveyed1.7drinkswereconsumedper
dayand2.8episodesofabusivedrinkingamonth.Itwasalsofoundthatthemoreacollege
studentwasexposedtocollegeenvironmentalfactors,thegreatertheriskofheavy,frequent
andabusivedrinking.Alcoholconsumptionincreasedforstudentslivingoncampus,livingina
dormitorywithahighernumberofroommates,andhavingbeenattheUniversityforlongerthan
ayear.Thisseverelyincreasedtheriskofheartdiseaseespeciallyasignificantincreaseinthe
dangerssuchashighbloodpressure,obesity,havingastroke,breastcancer,suicideand
accidents.Thestudyconcludedthatcollegestudentsneedtohaveresourcesavailableto
createanenvironmentofresponsibledrinking(Lorant,Nicaise,Soto&DHoore,2013).

InablogpublishedbyUSATodayentitledCollege,theauthorstatesthattheresultsofa
recentpollbytheInternationalFoodInformationCouncilFoundationshowadultsarefailingat
eatingthegovernmentrecommended45servingsoffruitsandvegetablesaday.Abindingto
campusdiningservicesbymealplans,studentshaveconstantobstaclestoabalanceddiet.
Thereisapoorselectionoffreshfruitandvegetables,thereisahighcostthatcomeswithfresh
foodincomparisontoprocessedsnacksandthereisalsolimitedaccesstonutritional
informationincafeterias.Ontopofthat,38percentofstudentsurveysarenevertakeninto
considerationbythedininghallmanagersmakingitimpossibleforstudentsvoicestobeheard
(Massa,2012).

glowinthedarkheartpinsthatflash.Wewillalsohaveglowinthedarkpaintalongthe
racecourseonthesidewalkandonbuildingwallswithfactsaboutheartdisease.This
racewillstartat9p.m.andwillendapproximatelyat11p.m.Sincethisisanightrace,
wewillworkwiththeCMUPoliceDepartmenttotemporarilyclosedowntheintersection
onEastCampusandBroomfieldsoourrunnerscancrosssafelywithoutworryingthey
cantbeseen.WewillalsohaveEMTsridingonbicyclesalongsidetherunnersfor
emergencysituations.AHAwillbeprovidingheadlightsfortheEMTsbicycles.

ThestartoftheracewillbeattheCMUsignbyGrawnHallandwillendatthe
ScoreboardoutsideofKellyShortsStadium,whichwillfeatureaheartbeatonitwith
soundstoencouragetherunnersastheapproachthefinishline.Therunnerswillbe
sentinwavesaccordingtowhentheyfeeltheywillfinishsoastoavoidpeoplebeing
trampledandpushed,andfromparticipantsfallingoffofthecourse.Nomorethan50
runnerswillleaveinasinglewave.Attheendoftherace,participantswilleachreceive
atickettotheHeartBeatsconcertthenextday.

Atthefinishline,AHAwillhaveatentsetupwithrefreshments(water,granolabarsand
fruit)andwillbeannouncingthewinnersoftheraceforfirst,secondandthirdplace.
WinnerswilleachreceivealimitededitionpairofBeatsheadphonesfeaturingthe
AmericanHeartAssociationlogo.

RegistrationfortheracewillopenamonthbeforetheraceonApril27,2017.Itwillfirst
beannouncedoncampuswhenstudentscomebackfromspringbreakandregistration
willgountil3p.m.thedayoftherace.Ticketsfortheracewillbesoldat$35,whichwill

StrengthCompetition:thiscompetitionwillconsistoffivecompetitions(endurance,
pushups,pullups,burpeesandplanks)

Endurance100mdash
Participantswillbegivenachancetorun100metersasfastastheycan.This
willbetimed.
Pushups2minutes
Participantswillbegiventwominutestodoasmanyfullreppushupsasthey
can.Participantsmaytakebreaksduringtheirtimegiven,butthetimerwillkeep
running.Therewillbejudgesassignedtoeachindividualparticipanttoassure
thattheparticipantsaredoingfullrepetitions.Ifthejudgemakesthedecisionthat
therepetitionwasnotfull,therepetitionwillnotcount.
PullupsUntilfailure
Participantswillbegivenachancetodoasmanypullupsastheycanuntilthey
candonomore.Oncetheparticipantsfeettouchthegroundortheyletgoofthe
barwitheitherorbothhandsthentheirattemptisover.Therewillbejudges
assignedtoeachindividualparticipanttoassurethattheparticipantsaredoing
fullrepetitions.Ifthejudgemakesthedecisionthattherepetitionwasnotfull,the
repetitionwillnotcount.
Burpees5minutes
Participantswillbegivenfiveminutestodoasmanyburpeesastheycan.They
maytakebreaksiftheychoosemeaningtherewillnotbeapenaltyforstopping.
Therewillbejudgesassignedtoeachindividualparticipanttoassurethatthe
participantsaredoingfullrepetitions.Ifthejudgemakesthedecisionthatthe
repetitionwasnotfull,therepetitionwillnotcount.
PlanksUntilfailure
Participantswillbegivenachancetoholdaplankpositionforaslongasthey
can.Oncetheproperformofaplankisbrokenthentheirtimewillexpire.Aplank
canbebrokenbyeitherunstraighteningtheirback,settingakneeontheground,
orliftinganarmofftheground.Therewillbejudgesassignedtoeachindividual
participanttoassurethattheparticipantsaredoingfullrepetitions.Ifthejudge
makesthedecisionthattherepetitionwasnotfull,therepetitionwillnotcount.

RegistrationforthiseventwillbeginMarch15whichisalsothedaythattheStrength
Competitionwillbeannounced.ParticipantscanregisteronlineorattheStudentActivity
Center.Participantswillbedividedintotwocategories,maleorfemale.Participantswill
betestedinapretrialperiodonMarch20.Atthistimetheywillbedoingalloftheevents
listedabove.TheactualeventwillbeginonApril16.Wewillcomparetheirstatisticsin
eachcategoryfromthepretrialtotheactualevent.Thelargestimprovementwillwin
thatround.

Onemalewillwineachroundandonefemalewillwineachround.Onceaparticipant
haswonacompetition,theywillnotbeabletowinadifferentone.Alltogether,therewill
be10winners.EachwinnerwillreceiveatickettotheHeartBeatsconcert,ameetand
greetwithKidRockbeforetheshowandalimitededitionofAmericanHeartAssociation

BeatheadphonesThetop30percentofparticipantsoverallwillreceiveatickettoHeart
Beatsaswell.

HeartBeatsFestival:AmericanHeartAssociationisplanningtohostaconcerttitled
HeartBeatsonApril22,2017atKellyShortsStadium.Theconcertwillfeaturelocal
actsandcelebrities.ThestagewillbeplacedatthecenterofKellyShortsStadium.Itwill
beasquarestagewithnobackorsides,allowingforfullviewingfromtheentirestadium.

Ticketsfortheeventwillbegivenouttoparticipantsinthe5kandthestrength
competition.Thetop30percentofparticipantsinthestrengthcompetitionwillbe
awardedfreeticketstotheconcert.Thewinnersofeachcategorywillbeawardedwith
VIP,backstagepasses.Theseticketholderswillbegivenpriorityseatingintheseconds
outlinedonthemap.Therewillalsobeopportunitiestowinticketsatvarioustents
outsidetheevent,whichwillbeexplainedbelow.Allwinnersofticketswillbegiven
priorityseatinginsectionsB47andF1619.Thesesectionsarelabeledonthemap
providedintheappendix.

Ticketswillbeonsalebothonlineandatthedoor.Thepriceforgeneraladmissionwill
be$40.Therewillalsobe200ticketssoldforthestadiumfloor,allowingticketholdersto
gaincloseraccesstothestage.Theseticketswillbesoldfor$150.Doorswillopenfor
theareaat5:30p.m.andthemusicwillbeginat7p.m.

LocalactswillbefoundviavariousinstitutionsinMountPleasant.Flyersdetailingthe
eventwillbepostedinallbarsthatfeaturemusicaswellaspostedontheirsocialmedia.
Interestedbandswillbetoldtocontactthemusiccoordinatorfortheeventandsenda
sampleoftheirwork.Outofallsubmissions,thetopfivewillbechosenforliveauditions.
Thesebandswillperforminfrontofthemusiccoordinatorandmustbringtheirown
equipment.Outofthesefive,onewillbechosentoopentheconcert.Theremainingfour
bandswillbetoldtobeonstandbythedayoftheeventincaseofanemergency.The
chosenbandwillperforma45minuteset.

Followingthelocalband,KidRockwillperform.BecauseofhistiestoMichiganandhis
diversemusic,KidRockwaschosen.HehasalargefanbaseinMichiganandhismusic
caterstomanydifferenttastes.Thiswillcreateahighattendancerateattheconcert.Kid
Rockwillperformanhourlongset.

HeadliningtheeventwillbeEminem.Again,becauseofhistiestoMichiganandhis
largefanbase,Eminemwaschosen.Toembracethethemeofthecampaign,priorto
enteringthestage,Eminemwillbehookeduptoaheartmonitor.Allstagelightswillgo
darkandEminemsheartbeatwillappearonthescoreboard.Thesoundofhisheartbeat
willbeprojectedthroughthespeakers.Thiswillservetwopurposes.First,itwillconnect
EminemsperformancewithAmericanHeartAssociationscampaign.Second,itwill
servetogetthecrowdexcited.TheheartmonitorwillcutoffthemomentEminembegins
hisfirstsong.Atthistime,themusicwillbeginandthestagelightswillbeturnedon.

Priortotheconcertsstart,therewillbeasmallheartfestivalintheparkinglot,taking
placefrom2p.m.until6p.m.Tentswillbesetupfeaturingvariouslocalhealthfoods
andactivities.Tentswillinclude:

Relaxationbooth:aseriesoftentssetupwithcalmingmusic,air
conditioningandcomfortableseating.Theseboothswillcontain
informationonstressrelieftechniquesandhowstressimpactsheart
health.

Destructionbooth:aseriesoftentssetupallowingparticipantstorelieve
stressbydestroyinganobject.Objectswillbepurchasedfromthedollar
storeandwillincludeplates,ceramicknickknacksandotherhighly
breakableobjects.

Participantswillberequiredtowearsafetyeyewearandstaybehinda
designatedlifefortheirsafety.Therewillbeachargeof$2toparticipate.
Theboothwillcontaininformationonstressrelieftechniquesandhow
stressimpactstheheart

Jeopardybooth:asmalljeopardygamewillbesetupforparticipantsto
answerquestionsregardinghearthealth.Twocontestantswillbeaskeda
questionandrequiredtobuzzintheiranswer.Thecorrectcontestant,or
thefirstcorrectcontestantinthecasewherebothareright,willbe
enteredintoadrawingtowinafreetickettotheconcert.Adrawingwillbe
givenevery30minutes.Threeparticipantswillwinateachdrawing.

Foodbooths:Numeroustentswillbesetuptoservefoodanddrinks.The
foodservedwillbebothhealthyandunhealthy.Allnutritionalinformation
willbepostedbytheboothsaswellasexplanationsonhowcertain
foods/foodgroupsimpacthearthealth.
