Students Lack of Interest In Sports
Sports is an essential part of life as it helps keep all of us healthy.
When we exercise during sports, we are in fact moving and flexing our muscles.
In this process, our muscles will gain in strength as well as durability.
For example, when one does weight lifting, one is able to strengthen ones muscles by
conditioning them to retain the heavy payload.
This helps in developing muscle strength as well as increasing muscle mass.
Having said that, it is a tragic scene to see teenagers of late are increasingly replacing this with
sedentary lifestyles.
It is apparent that they prefer indoor activities like playing computer games and watching movies
over outdoor sports like football, basketball and badminton.
With this becoming a widely accepted lifestyle, the health of our future generations are in
jeopardy.
Recently, a survey was conducted to find out the reasons for students lack of interest in sports.
The survey was conducted among 500 students who were selected randomly from Form One to
Form Five.
The results of the survey demonstrated that there are three main reasons for the students lack
of interest in sports.

First of all, the students do not have the right attitude towards sports.
They are not keen to participate in these extra-curricular activities because these activities do
not contribute towards their academic excellence.
They would rather spend time in their studies where visible results can be seen.
They further commented that they do not have time for sports.
This is because most of them are involved in club meetings after schooling hours and
involvement in sports would only physically exhaust them.
Secondly, parents themselves do not encourage their children to participate in sports.
This is to ensure that their children spend most of their studies.
They place greater emphasis on academic excellence.
To achieve this, parents are willing to send their children for tuition classes and would constantly
bombard them with every other academic oriented activities, leaving little time for sports.
The third reason for the students lack of interest in sports is linked to the schools failure in
providing proper sports facilities.
Students find that the sports equipments are insufficient and for those who sincerely tried
involving themselves in sports ended up waiting in queues for their turn.
For example, students have been complaining that the number of badminton courts in the
school is insufficient.
They ended up giving up waiting for their turn to play. In addition, they also complained that
most of the equipment provided are in a bad shape.
This detest the students from getting involved in sporting activities.

For example, the grass of the field is often left uncut and dirtied with rubbish while the courts are
not maintained properly.
It is really unfortunate that these reasons have deterred our students from involving themselves
in sports.
Hence, I have come up with a few suggestion which would probably help alleviate this problem.
Firstly, teachers should stress on the importance of sports to the students.
This could be done through physical education or even out of class interactions.
By doing this, students would be able to understand why sports is important to them beside
academic excellence.
Besides, dialogue sessions with parents can also be organized to help the parents see the
importance of sports.
The school could also probably hand out brochures for the students to take home for their
parents to read.
Most importantly, the facilities need to be improved and repaired.
This will ensure that the facilities are safe besides attracting students to get involved in sports.
Employing qualified trainers for individual sports will also inspire students to participate in sports
while competitions could be organized to encourage participation.
Should these suggestions be taken into consideration, the students in this school would be more
motivated to participate in sports.
