The Ellipse

An ellipse is formed when

the plane cuts only one of
the cones, but is neither
perpendicular to the axis
nor parallel to the a
generator.

An ellipse is the set of all points P in a plane such

that the sum of the distances of P from two fixed
points on the plane is constant.
The two fixed points are called foci and denoted
by F and F.

An ellipse has two latera recta (plural of latus rectum),

which are chords of the ellipse perpendicular to the
major axis and containing the foci.

Definition:
If the axes of an ellipse are parallel to the coordinate axes and
the center is at (h, k), we can obtain its equation by simply
subtracting h from x and k from y in the standard equation of
an ellipse.

Each ellipse is associated with a number, called the

eccentricity.
Eccentricity is the ratio of the distance from center to focus to
the distance from center to vertex. For any ellipse, the
eccentricity is
distance from center to focus

=
= =
distance from center to vertex

The eccentricity of an ellipse satisfies the inequality 0 < <

1.
It gives a measure of the shape of the ellipse: the closer the
eccentricity is to 0, the more nearly circular is the ellipse.

eccentricities

the given conditions:
Eccentricity is ; center at the origin, and
vertex at (0, 4).

Approximating a distance in an
elliptical path

Halleys comet has an elliptical orbit with

eccentricity = 0.967. The closest that
Halleys comet comes to the sun is
0.587 . Approximate the maximum
distance of the comet from the sun, to the
nearest 0.1 .
* astronomical unit used to specify large distances

The moons orbit is an ellipse with the

earth at one focus. The length of the major
axis is 478,000 miles and the eccentricity
= 0.0549. Find the least and greatest
distances from the earth to the moon.

Orbiting satellites (including the earth and the

moon) trace out elliptical paths.

1.) A bridge is supported on an elliptical arch ( half an

ellipse) of height 12 meters and width at the base
of 40 meters. Find the clearance under the bridge
at 10 m from the center of the arch.

2.) A cabinet maker wants to build a table with an

elliptic top. It is to be 120 inches long and 50
inches wide at its widest point. He uses two pins
and a string to draw the top. How far apart should
he position the pins and how long should the string
be?
