MS-DOS Executive in Windows 1.03

Install Information
No key or BIOS date required.

Notes
From readme included:
Windows 1.03
The primary differences between Windows version 1.01 and Windows
version 1.03 are:
- Version 1.03 of Windows now supports the AT&T 6300 and 6300
Plus.
- A number of additional device drivers have been added, and
some of the drivers shipped in 1.01 have been enhanced. Users
who have
installed printer drivers shipped in the 1.01 release should
replace them with the 1.03 drivers included on the Utility disk
(the Setup
program does not automatically install updated printer drivers).
- 14, 18, and 24 point sizes have been added to the Tms Rmn and
Helv fonts.
- Several PIF files have been changed to correspond to the
latest releases of the applications.
10| P a g e

- MS-DOS Version 3.20 is now completely supported. This includes

support for the IBM 4865 Personal Computer 3.5" External
Diskette Drive.
- The new features of the IBM keyboard shipped with the IBM
Personal Computer XT 5160 Models 268, 278, and 089, and the IBM
Personal Computer AT 5170 Model 339 are supported.
- Version 1.03 of Windows supports all of the features of and
replaces both the 1.01 version of Windows shipped in the US, and
the 1.02 version shipped in Europe.

Install Information
No key or BIOS date required.

Notes
From the readme included:
Version 1.04 of Windows supports all of the features of and
replaces version 1.03 of Windows shipped in the US and in
Europe.
The 1.04 release of Microsoft Windows now supports the IBM
Personal System/2 family of equipment. In addition to this, the
following changes have been made:
- A problem in Windows' handling of network failures has been
fixed.
- Windows now properly restores all interrupts upon exiting.
- The interface between Windows and the printer has been changed
to allow for faster printing.
- Using a high resolution screen with Windows 1.03, it was
sometimes possible to move an icon off the screen where it would
be inaccessible. This problem has been fixed in the 1.04
12| P a g e

release.
- The PIF editor has been changed to allow for lower case
parameters.
- Some changes have been made to allow for larger text on the
calculator buttons. Previously, large text sometimes extended
beyond the bounds of the buttons.
- In some international versions of Windows 1.03, the ability to
remove a printer driver using the control panel did not function
properly. This problem has been fixed in the 1.04 release.
- The method by which Windows 1.03 determined how to display the
screen for REVERSI.EXE caused a problem with some displays.
In Windows 1.04 the method by which Windows makes this
determination has been changed.
- The USA keyboard driver has been changed to support the IBM RT
format keyboard.
- The communications port driver has been changed to support the
IBM 3812 printer.
- The drivers for the HP LaserJet and HP LaserJet+ have been
replaced with a driver which supports both printers. This new HP
printer driver better supports the HP LaserJet printe rs and
allows the use of downloadable fonts on the HP LaserJet+. For
information regarding usage of these downloadable fonts, see the
file HPREADME.TXT on the "Supplemental Printer Driver Disk."
- The postscript printer driver has been modified to better
support postscript printers, as well as to add support for IBM's
Personal Pageprinter. Down loadable fonts for postscript
printers are now supported. For information regarding the use of
postscript printers, see the file PSREADME.TXT on the
"Supplemental Printer Driver Disk."

With this build we enter the Beta 2 stage. It is in the 24xx range. For some reason Microsoft

logged in for the first time, you notice a new Start Menu style and icons, including a new
Desktop Background with Whistler in it (although you can only see Whist clearly). This build
also includes the default Watercolor (renamed from Professional) theme and also 2 Test

Visual Styles called Chartreuse Mongoose and Blue Lagoon. In the Control Panel, some
Applets have been updated with icons/text that has been removed/added. It also includes
MSN Explorer 1.1 and Windows Messenger 3.0 and System Restore from Windows
Millennium. Windows Media Player has been updated to Version 8 and Windows Movie
Maker to 1.1. There has also been some work on the Trident Engine for Internet Explorer and
in the About, it now reads version 6.0 instead of 5.60. Outlook Express still identifies itself as
version 5, but has been upgraded to version 6 as by the build number.

This build is the earliest build that is leaked of Windows Vista, then Codename Longhorn.
There is much to tell about Codename Longhorn and Windows Vista, but you can look up
121| P a g e

that yourself. The only thing I note generally is that before reset it was based on Windows
.NET Server 2003 Release Candidate and after the reset on Windows Server 2003 Service
Pack 1 Release Candidate. In this build there are several differences between the previous
client version of Windows (XP) and this one. It features a new wallpaper, a new theme called
Plex (Luna in Blue/Green/Silver and Windows Classic is still available). The Explorer shell also
has some updates. In the computer it has bars on how full the drive is and in the folder view
it has a detailed view on top. In the Control Panel, the options are mostly the same as in
Windows XP, but there are some new items like: My Hardware, Portable Audio Devices.
Some hints of Avalon are also there. The Display Properties is an Avalon Application, but
hardly complete and buggy. You can install the Media Center Edition via the steps included.
After installation, it is highly unstable. In VMware, it opens and closes almost instantly.

a PnP installation screen. The OOBE is still broken. There is a new login screen. The XP style
has been replaced with a newer version. Also a new multiple accounts login page. The theme
is till Plex, but contains a smaller taskbar and a button. The XP Luna and Classic are still
available, although the Taskbar stays in Plex format. Parental Controls has a new option as
well as a Game Library (which doesnt function). Windows Messenger 4.0 has been upgraded

And with this build we reach Milestone 6, which means another wallpaper change. This time
for a red one instead of blue. The same login is kept from 4029 as well as the bootscreen.
The Pig latin is still present. The sidebar is a bit emptier and the clock is bigger. Plex has been
updated a bit, like removing the Windows Flag and the Computer icon has been replaced. In
the Control Panel, the Sync Manager has a new icon as well as the icons in Explorers Game
Library have been updated. On the desktop there is a new icon called File a Longhorn bug
which leads to an internal website. Outlook Express has now a functioning about box
displaying the Outlook Express 7, Windows Messenger has also been updated to version 6.0,
still for internal usage only. Internet Explorer 6 is still present as 6.05 and the toolbar is now
besides the menu bar instead of being below it. Windows XPs Luna (3 variants, blue, olive
green, and silver) and the Windows Classic are still available, but when chosen as with the
previous build the Plex Taskbar and Sidebar are still displayed.
VoteNow
Included in this build is an internal application named VoteNow.exe it displays a message so
that employees using that build can vote the build after some time (~4 hours). It seems that
the desktop Notification that should display with You have been using this Longhorn Build
for a few hours now. By using the Vote Now button below, you can vote to let us know what

This is the build from the Longhorn PDC (PDF2003). It was distributed as a kit, containing
the Professional builds, free and check/debug. Also the CTP of SQL2005 was included. This
build features an updated wallpaper as seen in 4042. This is also the first build to have IPv6

enabled by default and the login screen is black with a colored Windows Flag. The 32-bit
version includes the Preinstallation Environment installation, which is now also in the
installation. This build also can partition and format the hard-disk it is going to install to. It
includes the Windows Media Player 9 (updated) and Windows Messenger (unchanged,
except this version allows all accounts. It is however missing the notifications on the desktop.
64-Bit
This is the first x64 version of Longhorn that was distributed. It contains the i386 style of
setup. In the 2nd stage and after installation, the basic drivers only. After installation, you see
the desktop with no sidebar and the start button contains the word Start. In the Control Panel
there is no category view and in Explorer there is no left side-bar. Internet Explorer is
available in a 32-bit and 64-bit version. Outlook Express is only available in 32-bit, but you
cant run it since it isnt configured to run in 64-bit. Furthermore, there are more applications
missing like Media Player and Messenger. As with the 32-bit version, it also includes the
Windows XP Luna and Windows Classic Themes. But unlike the 32-bit version, with the 64bit, the taskbar also changes.
Check/Debug
The Check/Debug builds wont install. It fails in the beginning before you can start the setup.
It could work on real machine, but this is so far untested by TCB

Windows Messenger is not available in this build. Internet Explorer is still at version 6, but with

This is the official Beta 1 build. In this build the name Windows Vista is first mentioned as the
build string on the desktop on top of a new grassy wallpaper. Windows Setup has been
completely overhauled. It is now has a dark blue background and a lighter blue Windows
Logo, but the bootscreen remains unchanged. There are several changes since the pre-beta
build. The theme is still called Aero, but several enhancements to the Start Menu and taskbar
have been made such as the Beta 1 are darker and uses black colors while the Pre-Betas one
used lighter gray. It also includes the Security Pop-up seen in the Pre-Beta and Windows XP
Service Package 2. On the first boot, you also see a program running that is called the
Supplemental Driver Pack Installation Wizard which cant be used. There are several new
icons on the desktop: A readme, a link to the Supplemental Driver Pack and how to file a bug
report. The recycling bin is bigger and has turned. It is now facing left instead of right which
remains unchanged even in later Windows versions. The Control Panel has changed once
more. Now it shows groups with none, 1, or 2 basic tasks below it. It includes some updated
icons for some applications, but also includes some new ones like: Auxiliary Display, Indexing
and Search Options, Solutions to Problems and Windows Parental Controls (which was in the
pre-reset builds, but now reintroduced). In the 32-bit version, there are 2 portable devices
folder. One is named Portable Media Devices. In the 64-bit version there is an extra folder for
View x86 Control Panel icons. The solutions to problems is a new application which checks
for solutions online for problems your computer faces. In later Windows Versions it is still
present. In the Explorer you find Virtual Folders. The explorer windows themselves have
different colors: Blue, Green, Orange, and Red. It includes: Documents, Pictures, Music and a
games folder. The included applications are updated such as Media Player then to 3717,
Internet Explorer to 7 Beta. Outlook Express is still at version 6, but now includes 3 sample emails, includes an email about a feature only found in Vista Betas Outlook not in earlier
versions. Windows Messenger remains absent, but included is movie Maker 2.1, which cant
run without Audio Hardware. Other applications included are the Windows Backup Beta,
called SafeDocs when running. Also present is a Program Compatibility Wizard which helps
you install older applications, It also includes the UAP Settings which is default disabled. You
know it as User Account Control in later versions of Windows. It displays a message to
continue if you want to do an administrative task. As said before, the default theme is still
Aero with some enhancements. Unlike the Pre-Beta, it does not include Windows XPs Luna

way is described here:
-

Create a .VMDK for VMware Workstation (50 GB), partition and format it.
Mount it via VMware Workstation
***Run VMware Workstation as admin if you are on Windows Vista and higher,
otherwise the mounted drive is not visible for GImageX***
Use GImageX to apply the install.wim to the mounted drive
Then just unmounts it and boot the VM (Dont forget to set the date ;) ).

Released Version

Notes:
Released on 22 October 2009 after for than 2 years in development. It introduced several
changes since Windows Vista. The most notable being the Superbar which replaces the
taskbar and introduces Libraries. There are 6 SKUs which have several sub version: E, N, K,
and KN. The E edition was meant for the European Union and had Internet explorer removed
but this version was never made available. The N edition lacks the Windows Media-related
technologies and was sold in Europe along with the regular Windows Edition. A Media
Feature pack is available which puts the Media-related technologies back in. The K edition is
only released in the Korean language and includes specific Korean links to programs. The KN
158| P a g e

edition is the same as the K edition but as with the N edition, this version does not include
Windows Media-related technologies. A Media Feature Pack is available which puts the

Notes:
This build has been distributed at the build 2011 Conference in Anaheim.
It comes in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors, the 64-bit also has a separate release including
Developer Tools like Visual Studio with Blend. This was the first official preview of Windows 8.
It includes the features we know now in the Release to Manufacturing build of Windows 8,
such as the Startscreen, Charms bar, Lockscreen and Control Panel, but as this is an early
preview it looks and behaves differently, such as the Charms bar is in the left lower corner
169| P a g e

where the start menu was located. When you open an Metro Application it also display's text
besides the App specific Logo. The Ribbon UI in this build resembles the Office 2007 /
Windows Live, the aero is still transparent as in Windows 7, but squarer. It also includes
several Sample Applications not shipped in the Release to Manufacturing version, although
some do but are named differently.

This is the first leak after Public Preview (9431). It features some small updates, but other that
the ToolTips, you are presented with, it is not much different. During installation, you notice
that the introduction has been scaled down. Just a single line of text and then 2 new ones
during the color screens. In the Start Screen Personalize option you can see the dragon is
now available which was missing from the Preview when installed but was shown at BUILD
2013. The following is a list of applications available:

Notes:
The UI changes seen in 10125 are now available in the 10130 Insider build released by
Microsoft such as: New icons, sounds (again), the darker Cortana screens and better fly out
menus. In Microsoft Solitaire Collection, the beta logo has been removed. Updated MSN
Apps such as Money, News, Weather, included when first started the edition you want to
watch. Also included is the mysterious (for now) Network Beta map (although we can guess
199| P a g e

that its for showing nearby Wi-Fi connections as available on Windows Phone). Also updated
for the first time is when you are asked Add your Microsoft Account, but its fancier than the
previous one.
