CourseIntroduction:
Thefirstpartofthecourseengageswiththediscoursesonthelivinghistoricenvironmentbydwellingon
questionslikethepastbeinglayeredwithmanyculturalsystems,whosepastdoesoneconserve?Howdoes
oneidentifytherelevantvalueoftheexistingbuiltenvironmentthatiseitherdecayingorisunderpressure
ofchange,sometimesbasedontheneedstoimprovethequalityoflifeofthepeople?Whilelaterinputswill
beaboutvariousapproaches,thestudentswillengagewithalivinghistoricenvironmenttobeabletorelate
thesequestionsandapproacheswithgroundreality.

UnderstandingUrbanTransformationinaHistoricEnvironment:AnoverviewofapproachesinHistory,A
studyofRome.
Week2:
PhenomenonofUrbanTransformationinanIndianCity:Explainingvariousstagesofurbantransformation
andheterogeneousresponsesinacitycasestudyAhmedabad.Thislecturealsodiscussestheprocessesof
urbantransformationwithreferencetotheaspirationsofdevelopment.Othercases:Istanbul,Naples.
Week3:
Visitstoallthesitesidentifiedanddiscussionsontheplace.
Week4:
UrbanConservation:Theoriginsoftheideaanditsrelationshiptootherthoughtsonurbandesign/planning.
Thislecturewillalsolinkconservationtotheideaofsustainableurbandevelopmentandexploretheroleof
conservationwithintheframeworkofsustainability.
Week5:
Historicity,Heritageandproductionofvalues:Reading:ThepursuitofhistorybyJohnTosh.Broadening
definitionsofHeritage,theconstructofhistoricvaluesinanIndiancontext,heritageasculturalresourcevs
aneconomicresource.
Week6:
LivingHeritageandtheSenseofPlace:ReadingThepowerofplacebyDoloresHayden.Heritageasa
dynamicentity,ideaoftemporalassociations,thevalueofcreatingnewmemories.Adiscussionof
authenticityandintegrityincontextofalivingcity.
Week7:
PresentationofGroup1and2followedbyadiscussion
Week8:
PresentationofGroup3and4followedbyadiscussion
Week9:
ArtifactbasedApproachtoConservation:Identifyingtheoriginsofthisapproach(incontinuitywithLecture
inweek4),andtheprocessesrelatedtolisting,gradingetc.Italsooutlinesregulations,internationaland
nationalchartersthathavebeendevelopedaroundthisapproach.
Week10:
EcologicalApproachtoConservation:Anapproachthathassofarbeenmorerelevanttoconservationof
biodiversityandculturallandscapes.Thislecturewillalsoidentifythedefinitionsofaculturallandscape
andvaluesofendogenousknowledgeinconservingit.ReadingoftheHistoricUrbanLandscapeDocument.
Week11:
EnvironmentalApproachtoConservation:Animpactassessmentbasedapproachthatincludesparticipatory
processesofarrivingatvaluesandbelievesinpacingthechangetoallowcontinuityofplaces/artifactsof
memoriesandassociationsofthepeople.
Week12:
LivelihoodApproachtoConservation:Thislectureisbasedonspecificcasestudiesthathavelookedat
generationofalternativelivelihoodsforthepeoplelivinginhistoricenvironment.Italsocriticallylooksinto
theideaofculturaltourismanditsrelationshiptoconservation.
Week13:
PlacebasedApproachtoConservation:Thisapproachusesspatialtoolstowardsmakingofahistoricplace
relevanttolifetoday.Thiswillbedemonstratedthroughsomespecificexamplesthatlinktheideaofplace
makingwithappropriatingidentitiesofahistoricenvironment.

PeopleCenteredApproachtoConservation:Developingcountriesareexploringtherightbasedapproach
wherepeoplearenotconsideredjuststakeholdersbutrightsholdersinthedecisionmakingprocessofurban
conservation.
