Growth and Renovation

Pastor Mike recently shared FFC leadership’s vision to update
our chapel from its current 1980 appearance. This is being done
in preparation of the new contemporary service and to make the
room more usable for other events (weddings, funerals, special
events, etc.). After several weeks of research, we have been able
to convert the vision into a plan and are ready to move forward.
The Deacons have approved the project after careful review of
the project scope, costs, details and schedules.
What’s going to happen? Following is a brief summary:
• New and brighter house lighting system
• New stage lighting ceiling bays and wall poles
• Update catwalk system (above the ceiling)
• Remove wall-mounted stained glass light boxes and install
acoustic panels
• Remove crow’s nest from the south wall
• New multi-media booth
• Clean the interior of all HVAC (heating & cooling) ductwork
and equipment
• Install a modern HVAC control system
• Repair/replace hard surfaces (ceilings & walls)
• Paint (ceilings & walls)
• Update electrical devices (receptacles, switches, exit signs, etc.)

• Refinish concrete floor surfaces (under seating areas)
• Replace carpet (aisles and stage areas)
• New stadium style seating (with cup holders) for approxi-
mately 600 people
• Reconfigure to incorporate a center aisle
• Wide aisles and ample open space in the front and back of
the room
• Supplemental audio equipment (to allow existing equipment
to support a small band and worship team)
When will the remodeling be complete? Our current timeline
has the chapel ready for occupancy in mid-August. This date may
change as we get further into the project.
Initial demolition tasks began on Thursday, May 1st. There
will be a lot of work taking place in that area for the next several
weeks. Access to the chapel will be restricted due to the con-
struction activities and safety regulations. We will provide you
with regular updates as the project progresses.
We’d like to express our appreciation to the team of donors
(giving above and beyond their regular giving) that is making this
improvement project possible. This is all being done at no cost to
the church. $290,000 is being donated with $40,000 designated to
audio equipment and $250,000 designated to room improvements.
We thank God for another blessing and opportunity that He
has provided us.

Ministry, a quick visit to the Children’s Ministry Registration
Station will provide you with temporary security tags and give us
the information we need to effectively minister to your child.
Infants & Preschool Children
Childcare and teaching are available during the 9:00 hour and 10:30 worship service
in the Nursery and Preschool Departments.
Kindergarten–4th Grade
During the 9:00 hour, K–4th graders meet in graded classroom groups for Bible
learning and fun.
K–2nd graders attend the first part of the 10:30 worship service with their families
and then are dismissed through the large black doors at the front of the auditorium
to attend their own age-appropriate children’s church, called KZ Church. Parents, we
encourage you to go with your children the first time they visit KZ Church.
3rd & 4th graders attend the worship service to listen and learn with their families.
Xtreme AM (5th & 6th Grade)
Our preteens meet in their own Xtreme spot, Room 205, at 9:00 for a time of Xtreme
learning, Xtreme prayer and Xtreme relationship-building, then join their families for
the 10:30 worship service.
Youth (Grade 7–12) & Adults
Groups for ADULTS and activities for YOUTH begin at 9:00AM. Stop by
the Welcome Center to find out about each of the groups and how to get there.
Cellular Phones & Pagers
Thank you for turning off, or muting, your cell phone, pager and other electronic
devices during this morning’s worship service.
Assistive Listening Devices
ALS devices are available for check-out at the Resource Center in the foyer.
AED (Automated External Defibrillator)/First-aid

a news reporter. Michelle has also had
a significant presence at First Federated
Church. While saddened by her death, we
can rejoice in the knowledge that she has
begun her eternity in heaven with Jesus.
Tracy Griess, our Children’s El-
ementary Director, worked closely with
Michelle and summed up the feelings of
many when she said:
“It has been my privilege to serve
alongside Michelle here at First Federated. My first encounter
with Michelle was, like many of you, watching her report the
news around central Iowa. Then one Sunday I saw her in the
halls of Federated and thought how great she would be at the
Children’s Registration Station greeting our members, regular
attenders, and visitors. Michelle gave me an immediate “Yes!”
when asked to serve in this way. Since that day almost two years
ago I have been honored to get to know Michelle and call her my
friend. I can’t count
the number of people
that have com-
mented to me what
a wonderful person

sweet person she
was. Michelle served
in other areas in the
Children’s Depart-
ment over the years, and always did so with her sweet, gentle

The Funny Side of Teaching Children

Recently I received an email describing
what a typical group of Sunday school children
learned during their year in class. While I am
fairly certain their teacher was very specific, it
was discovered that some events from the Bible
were heard in a new light by these precious
children. Here are some excerpts:
“In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there
was nothing but God, darkness, and some gas. The Bible
says, ‘The Lord thy God is one,’ but I think He must be a lot
older than that. Anyway, God said, ‘Give me a light!’ and
someone did. Then God made the world. He split the Adam
and made Eve.”
“Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren’t embarrassed
because mirrors hadn’t been invented yet. Adam and Eve
disobeyed God by eating one bad apple, so they were driven
from the Garden of Eden. Not sure what they were driven in

 MISSION ONE Reaching others for Jesus Christ
Jeff & Carolyn Anderson
Mission Board: New Life
Location: Santander, Spain
What do they do? Jeff and
Carolyn are co-directors
of La Industria, a 9-month
discipleship program offered
to Spanish youth on the northern coast of Spain to strengthen
and develop leadership. In Contra Corriente the goal is to
motivate through events that challenge young people to fully
abandon their lives to God.
Carolyn participated in many FFC mission trips as a teen. She is
the daughter of Mike and Jan McCourt.
Prayer Requests:
• For God’s leading to purchase a place for La Industria.
• For spiritual awakening in the hearts of their children.
• For financial needs for family and ministries.
• Planning for the Contra Corriente conference in June.
• For the cell group they lead in their home.
Bill & Jenni Hunt
Mission Board: Campus Crusade for Christ
Location: Orlando, Florida
Answered Prayer: In late June, Hunts will move to Little Rock,
Arkansas, to become part of the Global Outreach office of
FamilyLIFE. Bill is assigned to develop FamilyLIFE in 25
African countries through shepherding, training, equipping
and mentoring national staff. Pray as they look for a home to
buy or rent this week.
Rita Ibbotson
Mission Board: TEAM
Location: Harare, Zimbabwe
What does she do? Rita is the senior tutor-in-
charge at the Karanda School of Nursing as-
sociated with the Karanda Mission Hospital.
The hospital, in a rural area, serves the Shona people. Rita’s
goal is to train nurses that are prepared to meet both physical
and spiritual needs of their patients—also to prepare students
to be active members of their churches when they finish the
program. Bible classes are included in the curriculum.
Prayer Requests:
• For Rita as she takes online classes toward a post masters
certificate in nursing education through Indiana Wesleyan
University, planning to complete the program and return to
Zimbabwe, November 14, 2008.
• For the people of Zimbabwe as they await a runoff election
for president—that the runoff will be fair.
• For Zimbabwe’s people who are plagued by hyperinflation,
shortages of everything from food, to water and electricity.
• For upcoming speaking engagements.

Elroy & Gordia Condit
Mission Board: Wycliffe Bible Translators
Location: Orlando, Florida/Arkansaw, Wisconsin
What do they do? The Condits serve at
the Orlando Headquarters in Florida
during winter months. They ministered
seven years overseas. Later, Elroy
served with project funding for transla-
tion projects in the US and Africa.
He currently phones and thanks donors for their gifts to
Wycliffe projects. Gordia participates in WBT’s worldwide
prayer ministry. She is daughter of the late Roy and Bea
Shafer, and served FFC as church organist for several years.
The Condits were married at FFC in 1951.
Prayer Requests:
• For opportunities to pass the torch for Christ to the next
generation.
• For safety in travel.
• For continued good health and stamina.
• For joy in their work whether in Florida during the winter,
or from their office at home in Wisconsin, with computer,
printer and email.
• For their vital part in the task of giving God’s Word to those
who do not yet have it in their own language.

Drake University International Student Friendship Ministry
Coordinators, First Federated Church
This ministry provides a way for
international students, who are far
away from home and family, to con-
nect with and become friends with an
American family during the students’
time in the US. The friendship pro-
gram is unique in that the students do
not live with their American family.
While the program is officially
non-faith based, their goal as volun-
teer coordinators is to recruit host
families from Bible believing churches before recruiting from
alternate sources to ensure that each student has an opportunity
to see and experience the love of Jesus through their host family
and, hopefully, desire to have Jesus as a part of their life as well.
Currently, there are 354 international students enrolled
at Drake University and more than 175 are involved in the
friendship program. On average, 100 new international students
arrive each fall with approximately 75% of them requesting host
families.
Many of the students return to their countries and become
leaders in their fields of study. What an opportunity we have to
reach the lost in foreign countries from our own homes here in
the US.
