COUNT TO TEN
Kevin was a complete mess! He was covered in dirt and grass stains. His shirt was hanging
out of his trousers and the pocket was nearly torn off. He had lost one his school shoes.
Kevin! cried his mother when she saw him. Youve been fighting again, havent you?
Yes, Mum, Kevin said, hanging his head. But it wasnt my fault! I didnt start the fight!
You seem to think its never your fault, Kevin. But its your bad temper that gets you into
trouble. You must learn to control it. From now on, whenever you feel you are going to lose
your temper, I want you to pause and count to ten. But itll be really hard, Mum!
No buts, Kevin! said his mother sharply. Next time, you will pause and count to ten.
Now promise me! All right Mum, I promise, replied Kevin.
For a whole week, Kevin didnt get into any fights. His mother was happy. Then, one day,
he came home with a large bruise and a black eye. His clothes were torn and dirty again.
This time he had also lost his school bag.
Now what caused you to fight this time, Kevin? I thought I told you to count to ten!
I did, Mum, honestly! But Nick started it anyway! cried Kevin.
Are you sure you counted to ten? asked his mother.
Yes, Mum- but Nicks mother only made him count to five so he hit me first! wailed
Kevin.
