English III

Fall 2016
LAP 1
First Encounters
The Colonial Period
Objectives:
To improve reading proficiency and expand vocabulary
To gain exposure to notable writers of the American Colonial Period
To define and identify significant literary techniques: allusion, allegory, metaphor, conceit, pun,
paradox, and tone
To interpret and respond to historical accounts, a journal, a sermon, and poetry through analysis
of their elements
Rationale:
The settlers who journeyed across a hostile ocean and forged homes in a new land were generally
far too busy just surviving to create poems and other types of literature that matched those of other areas
of the world. The early settlers did succeed, however, in writing vivid narrative accounts a literary form
that has remained popular to this day.
Grading:
Tests, major papers, projects = 60%
Homework assignments, daily quizzes = 30%
Class participation, journals = 10%
Extra Credit: (Daily grade replacement-Due on or before the day of the test. Both should follow
MLA format for any credit!)
