Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide the fundamental skills
and knowledge required for scientific investigation. Through the many hands-on
learning activities, students begin to pose questions, develop respect for scientific
evidence, weigh and evaluate their own observations, and reflect on the process as
well as on their own growth. While the 6th grade curriculum emphasizes the study
of earth and environmental science, the course includes aspects of the physical and
life sciences as well.
Goals and Objectives:

discovery of the practical nature of scientific protocols and

procedures;
insight into the methods used for studying very large, long-ago or
far-away objects;
appreciation of the powerful forces which shape our Earth;
utilization of the appropriate tools and technology for scientific
investigation;
communication of results of investigations through lab write-ups
and oral presentations;
demonstration of accurate data interpretation and grade-level
appropriate graphing and mapping skills;
development of critical thinking skills, including identification of
relationships between ideas and/or events;
increasingly good study habits and class preparation, and the
resulting high level of achievement and self-esteem;
recognition of the ethical considerations of scientific endeavors.
Course Expectations: I expect all students to:
Bring appropriate materials to each class;
Complete all assignments, and turn them in promptly;
Participate in class activities and discussions;
Maintain a lab book (I.N.) containing all results of investigations;
Adopt a positive attitude and a cooperative spirit;
Always leave the lab/classroom CLEANER THAN YOU FOUND IT.

Course Outline:
First Trimester:
Investigation and experimentation - developing the skills necessary
for scientific research. Sharpen your pencil!

Earths Changing Surface - Mapping, climate, the water cycle,

weather, and the role of heat, density, buoyancy and energy in geologic
processes. Go with the flow!!
Second Trimester:
I Feel The Earth Move Under My Feet earthquakes, volcanoes, and
other evidence /effects of plate tectonics. Prepare to be moved!
Third Trimester:
Ecosystems and Ecology- All is interrelated!

Environmental Education - A study of ecosystems, biomes, and the

geologic history of Central California, culminating in a six-day study trip to
Pinnacles National Park. Lace up those boots!
Evaluation and Grading Policy: Students receive points for all assignments, which
include homework, text study, class work, labs, projects and tests. While there is
variation from time to time, homework, daily class work and text study are graded
on a 5- or 10- point scale, quizzes and tests generally range from 10-50 points, and
projects (including Interactive Notebook work and essays) are considerably more.

6th graders are expected to accept responsibility for learning and practicing good
work habits. Because we all need a little extra time now and then, late work is
accepted up to two weeks after the due date, for full credit. Be aware that
habitual abuse of this privilege is not viewed favorably, and will result in a parent
conference. Please keep current with your work!
