THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

PRELUDE

Lectionary 22

CONFESSION OF SINS AND PROCLAMATION OF FORGIVENESS

Holy Communion (ELW 3)

INTRODUCTION
Invited and invitingthat is the nature of the church. By Gods grace in
holy baptism we have a place at the banquet table of the Lord. When, by
the power of that same Spirit, humility and mutual love continue among us,
the church can be more inviting still.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
God of compassion, whose Son became poor for our sake: Help us to see
the face of Christ in those who are poor, and in serving them to serve you.
Give us generous hearts so that those living in poverty may have adequate
food, clothing, and shelter. By your Spirit move us to affirm the dignity of
all people and to work for just laws that protect the most vulnerable in
society; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prelude in e minor

Dmitri Shostakovich

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Let us pray.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Let us confess our sins.
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
Gracious God,
We confess that we have turned in toward ourselves and have turned
away from you and from our neighbors. We are truly sorry and
humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us
again to you and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and
serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins
are forgiven. By grace you have been saved. Almighty God give you faith
through the Holy Spirit that Christ may live in your hearts and that his love
may show forth in your lives. Amen.
GATHERING SONG:

Eternal Father, Strong to Save (ELW 756)

GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of
the Holy Spirit be with you all!
And also with you!

CANTICLE OF PRAISE
Worshippers may bow as they sing the name of Jesus and at the words
we worship you, have mercy on us, and receive our prayer.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, you resist those who are proud and give grace to those who are
humble. Give us the humility of your Son, that we may embody the
generosity of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
Please be seated.
A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN
FIRST READING Jeremiah 2:4-13
4

Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the
house of Israel.5Thus says the LORD:
What wrong did your ancestors find in me
that they went far from me,
and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves?
6They did not say, Where is the LORD
who brought us up from the land of Egypt,
who led us in the wilderness,
in a land of deserts and pits,
in a land of drought and deep darkness,
in a land that no one passes through,
where no one lives?
7I brought you into a plentiful land
to eat its fruits and its good things.
But when you entered you defiled my land,
and made my heritage an abomination.
8The priests did not say, Where is the LORD?
Those who handle the law did not know me;
the rulers transgressed against me;
the prophets prophesied by Baal,
and went after things that do not profit.
9Therefore once more I accuse you,
says the LORD,
and I accuse your childrens children.
10Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look,
send to Kedar and examine with care;
see if there has ever been such a thing.
11Has a nation changed its gods,

even though they are no gods?

But my people have changed their glory
for something that does not profit.
12Be appalled, O heavens, at this,
be shocked, be utterly desolate,
says the LORD,
13for my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me,
the fountain of living water,
and dug out cisterns for themselves,
cracked cisterns
that can hold no water.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM 81:1, 10-16
Refrain:

Tone:

Sing with joy to | God our strength

and raise a loud shout to the | God of Jacob.
10
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the | land of
Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and | I will fill it.
11
Yet my people did not | hear my voice,
and Israel would | not obey me.
12
So I gave them over to the stubbornness | of their hearts,
to follow their | own devices. R

13

Oh, that my people would lis- | ten to me,

that Israel would walk | in my ways!
14
I would quickly sub- | due their enemies
and turn my hand a- | gainst their foes.
15
Those who hate the LORD would | cringe in fear,
and their punishment would | last forever.
16
But I would feed you with the | finest wheat
and satisfy you with honey | from the rock. R
SECOND READING: Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16
1

Let mutual love continue. 2Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers,
for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing
it. 3Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with
them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being
tortured. 4Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be
kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. 5Keep your
lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for
he has said, I will never leave you or forsake you. 6So we can say with
confidence,
The Lord is my helper;
I will not be afraid.
What can anyone do to me?
7Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you;
consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8Jesus
Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 15Through him, then, let
us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that
confess his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have,
for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

SERMON Pastor Charles Peterson

HYMN OF THE DAY: Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love (ELW 708)
APOSTLES CREED
Worshippers are invited to bow beginning with the words born of the
Virgin Mary, until the words he descended to the dead.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Verse: Take my yoke upon you and | learn from me;*

For I am gentle and hum- | ble in heart. (Matt. 11:29)
GOSPEL: Luke 14:1, 7-14
As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon
their forehead, then over their lips, and then over their hearts, silently
praying, May the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ be ever on my mind, on
my lips, and in my heart.
The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
7When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told
them a parable.8When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,
do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished
than you has been invited by your host;9and the host who invited both of
you may come and say to you, Give this person your place, and then in
disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10But when you are
invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes,
he may say to you, Friend, move up higher; then you will be honored in
the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11For all who exalt
themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be
exalted.
12He said also to the one who had invited him, When you give a
luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your
relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you
would be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the
crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14And you will be blessed, because they
cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the
righteous.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
With all our heart and with all our mind, let us pray to the Lord. The
assistant will end each petition saying, Let us pray to the Lord. Please
respond, saying "Lord, have mercy."
Please sit or kneel as you are able.
Each petition ends with:
let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, have mercy.
Rejoicing in the fellowship of the saints who have gone before us,
especially Mary, the mother of our Lord, Isaiah the Prophet, King David,
and Saints Paul and Luke, joining our prayers to theirs, we commend all for
whom we pray, O gracious God, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

Please stand and greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.

DIALOGUE

PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
ANTHEM AT THE OFFERING Parergon to Amazing Grace Wells
OFFERTORY HYMN:

PREFACE
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Worshippers are invited to bow through to the words Hosanna in the
highest!

OFFERING PRAYER
Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your
goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our
possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with
your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our
Savior and Lord.
Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lords body
and blood, each time the words Do this for the remembrance of me, are
spoken.
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In
great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick
and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross,
opened his arms to all.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave
thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my
body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are
all who are called to this table.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and your
servant shall be healed.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and
blood. If you have not been baptized, you are also welcome to the table as
Gods guest; we are honored by your presence. We recognize the Body of
Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant
or dont wish to receive today, we encourage you to hold your hands over
your chest for a blessing as you come forward.
LAMB OF GOD

Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await

his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and
unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of
Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor
and glory, now and forever.
Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever.
Amen.

COMMUNION
The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you.
Amen.

SONG DURING DISTRIBUTION: When Peace like a River (ELW785)

another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, died 430
Sunday, August 28, 2016
Augustine was one of the greatest theologians of the Western church. A
native of North Africa, he recovered from a debauched young adulthood
through the influence of his mother, Monica, and Bishop Ambrose of
Milan. Besides writing influential theological books, he served as bishop of
Hippo, in present-day Algeria.
Moses the Black, monk, martyr, died around 400
Sunday, August 28, 2016
Converted from life as a thief and a robber to Christianity, Moses was an
Ethiopian who became a desert monk at Skete. His conversion had a great
impact in his native country. Wearing a white habit, he said, "God knows I
am black within." He was murdered during an attack by Berbers.
Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig, bishop, renewer of the church,
died 1872
Friday, September 02, 2016
Grundtvig was, with Sren Kierkegaard, one of the two great Danish
theologians of the nineteenth century. As a pastor, he battled the prevalent
idea that Christianity was more a philosophy than divine revelation. He
wrote over a thousand hymns.
