AN OVERVIEW
Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow is a University established in 1983
under an Act of Legislature of the State of Uttar Pradesh. Located on a 550-acre residential campus on
Raebareli Road, Lucknow, it is rated among the top medical institutions in the country. A highly skilled
and dedicated faculty provides quality education and state-of-art patient care, and is involved in research
that strives to meet the needs of the society. The Institute awards DM, MCh and MD degrees that are
recognized by the Medical Council of India. It also offers a PhD program, a 2-year Master in Hospital
Administration program (approved by the University Grant Commission, not approved by the Medical
Council of India) and several one-year Post-Doctoral Certificate (PDC) courses in medical specialties. In
addition, the Institute offers several non-degree/non-certificate training positions, such as Senior Resident
positions in several medical specialties, a Senior Demonstrator program in Molecular Medicine &
Biotechnology, and a Medical Physics Resident program.

Admissions to various courses (DM, MCh, PDC and MHA) are made once a year (in July) and
appointments to Senior Resident (Hospital Service) / Senior Demonstrator / MPR positions are made
twice a year (in January and July) through All-India entrance examinations held on the first Sundays of
June and December. A detailed advertisement listing vacancies is published on the Institutes web site
(www.sgpgi.ac.in) in advance of the entrance examination.

Candidates must possess, as on 30th June 2016, a requisite qualification RECOGNISED by the Medical
Council of India (except for degrees not covered by Medical Council of India, where the degrees must be
recognised by the respective bodies that approve the qualifying courses). Postgraduate degrees from
Departments / Institutions to which MCI recognition has not been formally granted (for example: under
consideration) will not be considered and candidature of applicants with such degrees may be rejected at
any stage (including after admission if this fact comes to notice at that stage).

Age
Upper age limit for eligibility of senior residents is 33 years and for DM, MCh, and PDC courses is 35
years as reckoned on 30th June (for July session) and 31st December (for January session). Age relaxation
to a maximum of 5 years may be given to SC/ST/OBC candidates having domicile of Uttar Pradesh, to
widowed / divorced / legally-separated women who have not re-married, and to disabled/handicapped
persons, as per Government rules. There is no upper age limit for PDF courses.
Reservation
There is no reservation in DM/MCh/PDC programs. For Senior Resident (Hospital Services), reservation
will apply as per UP Government rules. Only candidates having domicile of Uttar Pradesh will be eligible
for the benefit of reservation. Reserved category candidates having domicile other than Uttar Pradesh will
be treated as General category candidates for all purposes.
Reserved category candidates should produce certificate of their category in the prescribed format
available on website hosted by the State Government. The certificate should be less than 6 months old.
Sponsored Candidates
Admission to various courses is open for candidates sponsored by Central/State government
organizations, universities or defense services, subject to the following conditions.
a) Sponsored candidate will not be given relaxation in method of selection, duration of course,
practical training, pattern of examination and payment of prescribed fee, etc. except relaxation in
age as per rules.
b) SGPGI will not pay the sponsored candidates any salary, stipend or any other emoluments during
the entire training period.
c) The candidate should provide a certificate from the sponsoring authority that:
a. The candidate is a permanent employee of the sponsoring organization.
b. She/he will be granted leave for 3 years in case of DM/MCh and 1 year in case of
PDF/PDC programs.
c. The candidate after completing the course will be suitably employed by the sponsoring
organization to work in the specialty in which the training is provided.
d. The sponsoring authority shall be responsible for payment of salary or any other
emoluments to the candidate during the period of training.
d) Sponsorship certificate should be attached with the application form, failing which the
sponsorship will not be entertained.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Information brochure & Application form
The information brochure can be downloaded from the Institutes website www.sgpgi.ac.in or
http://5.9.254.185/ between 28th April 2016 and 18th May 2016. The candidates should follow the
instructions in the brochure carefully while filling up the form.
The candidates need to first pay the application fee online, latest by 18th May, 2016 at 17:00 hours
failing which it is not possible for apply. The application form will become available for online filling
after a gap of one working day (for instance, if fee is deposited on Saturday, May 7, 2016, the form will
become available on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, after a gap of one working day, i.e. Monday); the Institute
will send an SMS / email to each payee when the online form become available. The deadline for filling
the online form is 20th May, 2016 at 5:00 pm.

After online submission, the candidate must take a print out of the completed application form, sign it at
the requisite places, and send to Executive Registrar, SGPGI, Raebareli Road, Lucknow 226014 along
with documents in support of age, qualifications, proof of recognition of MD/MS degree by the MCI (e.g.
a print out from the MCI website), reservation, etc. The candidate must self-attest all enclosures with
his/her signatures. The printed application forms along with the enclosures must reach by 25th May,
2016, by speed post, registered post or courier. The envelope should be superscribed with the
advertisement number and Application for entrance exam to DM / MCh / PDC / SR(HS) (name of
specialty).
Only those who complete all the steps (pay the fees, complete the online form, and send the printed form
with enclosures by the above deadline) will be eligible for the entrance examination.
Filling the application form

Open the home page of SGPGI at www.sgpgi.ac.in 1


Click on the link that announces the admission to DM/MCh/PDC/SR(HS) courses
On the Online form submission tab, click on Register and Pay Online. The State Bank of India,
State Bank Collect, page will open. Accept Terms and Conditions, and click on Proceed.
Select Category as application fee, select the correct Advertisement Number, fill details of
payment and submit. At this stage, you will be required to provide your name, date of birth, 10-digit
mobile phone number, email ID, fathers and mothers names.
While filling your online registration slip / application form. It is your responsibility to remember
your email-id and bank transaction number beginning with DU and date of birth. No telephonic
/personal request, in this regard, will be entertained.
Verify details and confirm transaction
Pay fees using options provided (Net banking, credit card, debit card or challan paid in a branch of
State Bank of India).
A transaction alert will be sent to your registered mobile number
After one clear working day (for instance if you made payment on working day 1, then should log
in on working day 3; Sundays and holidays do not count), log onto SGPGI website at
www.sgpgi.ac.in 2. On the tab, Online form submission, select Complete form
Fill the transaction number and your date of birth
The main form will open, partially populated with some personal details. Complete it. Click on
Submit once and please wait, and upload documents
You will require to have scanned copies of your recent photograph, signature and all relevant
documents as separate files which you need to upload.
When entry of data and uploading of documents has been completed, click on Back to print
documents. Then, print pages 1, 2 and 3, and send these along with self-attested supporting
documents posted to the Executive Registrar as explained in the next section.
If you are unable to access the website www.sgpgi.ac.in , you may reach the banks website directly at
https://www.onlinesbi.com/prelogin/icollecthome.htm . Then accept Terms and conditions and click
on Proceed. For State, choose Uttar Pradesh, and for Type of corporate/institution, choose
Educational institutions, and for Educational Institutions Name, choose SGPGI. Then choose
Payment category as Application fee, select the correct Advertisement number, fill details and
proceed to the subsequent steps.

Application fee
Rs 1000, payable by Net Banking, Debit / Credit card or through a computer-generated challan form in
any branch of State Bank of India through State Bank Collect. Additional bank transaction charges may
apply. Application fee is not refundable either in full or in part under any circumstances.

Checklist
Please complete and arrange your application in the following order before sending to the Institute.
(a) Printed application form in 3 pages (2-page form + 1 page of identification-cum-attendance card)
with your signature at two places (page 2 of the form and on the identification-cum-attendance card,
page 3), and paste self-certified, recent, passport-size, coloured photographs at appropriate places.
(b) A self-certified copy of matriculation/age-proof certificate.
(c) Proof of MD /MS / DNB course recognized by Medical Council of India / State Medical Council
and a self-certified MCI recognized MD/MS/DNB degree / passing certificate. Applicants who are
likely to complete the 3-year requisite tenure and degree by 30th June, 2016 (from an MCI
recognized program only) will be provisionally permitted subject to production of a proof of such
completion from competent authority.
MD / MS / DNB teaching program (i.e. Department or Institution) which is an essential qualification
must be recognized by the MCI as on date. Qualifications from programs where recognition is
pending / in process will NOT be entertained and no correspondence in this regard will be
entertained. For other programs (eg. Medical Physics Resident / Senior Demonstrator, etc), the
qualifications must be approved by the respective competent bodies).
(a) Candidate with medical degrees must submit copies of Medical Registration from Medical Council
of India or State Medical Council, and of registration of MD degree with such a council (where
applicable), failing which the application will be rejected.
(b) A self-certified caste certificate from a competent authority in the format prescribed by the
Government of UP, issued in the 6 months prior to date of entrance examination (when applicable).
(c) Sponsorship certificate from the employer (when applicable)
(d) A No objection certificate from the current employer (when applicable).

STEPS AFTER SUBMITTING APPLICATION


How to know your eligibility
Eligibility status of each applicant will be placed on the Institutes website on 28th May, 2016.
How to get your admit card
Eligible candidates can log in and print their Admit Card online from 31st May, 2016 onwards using the
following details: registration number and DOB written on right upper corner of the application form.
Please note that Admit Card(s) will not be sent by post.
Examination/result
Part A: Objective written examination for selection of DM/MCh/PDC/ Senior Residents (HS) will be held
on Sunday, 5th June, 2016.
Based on result of Part A examination, selected candidate will be called for Part B departmental objective
test, which will be held on Tuesday 7th June 2016 from 10.00 AM in respective departments. The list of
candidates called for departmental test will be displayed on Monday 6th June 2016 evening on the Institute
Notice Board at Administrative Block/ Institutes website.
The final result of entrance exam will be available on the Institute notice boards / website on or before
June 15, 2016.
Procedure for scrutiny
In case any candidate desires scrutiny of his result, he/she is required to submit an application in writing
along with a fee of Rs. 3000 via demand draft in favour of Director, SGPGIMS, Lucknow, Academic

Account. The result will be made available in one week after the request is made. No request for scrutiny
will be entertained after one week of publication of result.
Important instructions
Candidates can apply for DM/MCh/PDC/SR(HS) in one department through one application form, and
indicate the order of the preference for these positions. In case a specialty provides more than one PDC
options, a candidate can opt for more than one PDC programs.
An applicant may also indicate in the online application form whether he/she would like to be considered
for an ad hoc (89 days) appointment (extendable once only subject to satisfactory performance) as Senior
Resident in the specialty, if a position is available after filling the regular positions.
The completed Application Form and Identification-cum-Attendance Card along with relevant certificates
should reach the Institute on or before the last date as specified in the advertisement. Incomplete
applications or applications received after due date shall not be considered and no communication in this
regard shall be entertained. The institute takes no responsibility for delay or loss of application in postal
transit.
A candidate who is not found eligible for the entrance examination, may request for a review of his/her
application to the Executive Registrar of the Institute between 25th and 30th May, 2016 after paying the
prescribed fee of Rs. 500 through a Bank Draft drawn in favour of Director, SGPGIMS, Lucknow,
Academic Account, payable at State Bank of India, SGPGI Branch, (Code 7789), Lucknow. However
no additional document or information other than that submitted with the original application form will be
considered during such review. Request for review made after the above specified dates will not be
considered.

METHOD OF SELECTION
The Entrance Examination will have two parts (total 100 marks).
Part A (60 marks): An objective-type, written examination of 90-minute duration, consisting of 60
multiple TRUE/FALSE questions. Each question will have a stem and five responses. The candidate is
required to mark each response as either true or false, using only a black or blue ball-point pen. All
questions carry equal marks. For each correctly-marked response, 0.2 marks will be awarded. For each
incorrectly-marked response, 0.1 mark will be deducted. No marks will be awarded if a response is not
marked as either true or false.
Based on the result of Part A examination, candidates will be called for Part B departmental objective
examination (in the ratio of 1:3 candidates per DM/MCh/PDC/SR seat in each department). Where in a
department, several different types of positions are available (e.g. DM/MCh, PDC, SR, etc), a candidate
may qualify for departmental test for one type of position, but not for the others. Those who qualify for
department test for DM/MCh positions would also be considered as having qualified for departmental test
for PDC positions in the same department (provided the essential educational qualifications for PDC are
similar to those for the DM degree) and have requested so in the online application form, but not vice
versa. Similarly, those who qualify for departmental test for DM/MCh/PDC positions, would also be
considered to have qualified for departmental test for SR(HS) positions in the same department (provided
the essential educational qualifications for SR position are similar to those for the MCh/DM/PDC
courses), and have requested so in the online application form, but not vice versa.
Part B: Departmental objective test of 40 marks on the topics of patients/disease in the ward/laboratories.
In case of tie, In the event of two candidates securing identical total marks, the candidate with higher
marks in Part B will be ranked higher and if marks in Part B are also identical then the older candidate
will be ranked higher.

STEPS AFTER SELECTION


Medical examination
No candidate will be permitted to join a course, unless declared medically fit by the Medical Board
constituted by the Institute for the purpose. The decision of the Board shall be final. Withholding
information about current or past illness / treatment if discovered at a subsequent stage may result in
appropriate disciplinary action.
Joining
If a candidate fails to join the course by the date stipulated in the selection letter, the offer shall
automatically stand cancelled and the seat will be offered to candidates in the waiting list in the order of
merit.
Duties and responsibilities
Students admitted to DM, MCh and PDC courses shall simultaneously work as Senior Residents. They
will be required to perform such work as may be assigned to them and is necessary in the interest of
patient care, teaching, training, research and in Emergency services as and when required.
Duration of appointment
All Senior Residents (including DM/MCh candidates) are appointed for a maximum period of 3 years
subject to renewal after satisfactory performance report from their departments at the end of every year. If
a MD/MCh/PDC student takes extra-ordinary leave or maternity leave for more than 3 months, the tenure
of training will be extended by another six months with salary and examination will be delayed as per the
Institutes rules in force from time to time. Appointment of PDC student is for one year. Since the total
tenure of SR(HS) is 3 years, (including any previous appointments as SR at SGPGI or elsewhere, the
candidates are required to declare the period of training or service undertaken as Senior Resident at
SGPGI or in other Institutions at the time of applying. Any failure to do so can lead to cancellation of
candidature and even termination of appointment.
Salary
Senior Residents are paid salary in the pay band 3 of Rs. 15,600 39,100 with Grade pay of Rs. 6600
plus other allowances as per rules during his/her first year term, which will be increased as per rules
during subsequent years. PDC students receive a salary similar to that of the first-year Senior Resident.

Hostel accommodation
All Senior Residents are required to reside in the campus. They are provided semi-furnished hostel as per
the rules and policies of the Institute.

Leaving the course


Candidates selected for DM/MCh courses will have to execute a bond at the time of joining. As per terms
& conditions of the bond, if a candidate discontinues the course without completion, he/she will have to
pay a sum of Rs.5,00,000 (Rs. Five lakhs only) to the Institute. At the time of joining, the selected
candidates shall have to submit their original Matriculation certificate, MBBS mark sheets of all
professional examinations, MBBS Degree, Permanent Registration certificate, MD/MS Degree (or
MD/MS Passing certificate if degree has not yet been awarded), Proof of MD/MS Degree recognition
from the Medical Council of India, Migration Certificate (for enrolled candidates) and a certificate of
good conduct from two persons.

MISCELLANEOUS INSTRUCTIONS
The date, time and venue of examination will be provided on the admit card.
No TA/DA shall be paid for appearing in the entrance examination or for joining.
Number of seats/posts indicated in the advertisement for various programs is provisional and subject
to change without prior notice.
Any attempt on the part of a candidate to suppress facts, to provide false information or to influence
selection directly or indirectly will be treated as a disqualification. If evidence of this surfaces after
selection, the services may be terminated and admission cancelled, even at that stage.
Each selected candidate shall have to pay the fee/dues within the prescribed period, failing which
his/her admission/appointment shall be cancelled.
The selected candidates shall need to have present original documents (medical registration, date of
birth certificate, certificates of educational qualification, experience and relieving and good conduct
certificate from the University/Institution last attended) for inspection and verification by the Institute
authorities and submit a self-attested copy of each at the time of joining.
The training programs are full-time and continuous, and private practice in any form after joining the
Institute is strictly prohibited. Any violation of this may leave to termination of appointment and
cancellation of admission.
Senior Residents admitted to the Institute shall maintain good conduct, attend their classes regularly
and abide by the regulations/guidelines of the Institute failing which their names are liable to be
struck off the rolls of the Institute.
Participation in any agitation, protest, strike, etc. is prohibited. Candidates not abiding with these
provisions are liable to be terminated.
Ragging is strictly prohibited. If any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the authority, the
concerned student shall be given liberty to explain and if his/her explanation is not found satisfactory,
the authority would expel him/her from the Institute.
No intimation to non-selected candidates will be sent and no correspondence on this subject will be
entertained.
These rules are subject to change in accordance with the decisions of the Institute, taken from time to
time.
The decisions taken by the Director of the Institute in all matters related to the selection of candidates
for admission to various courses shall be final and no appeal shall be entertained on this subject.
Force majeure
If the entrance examination is postponed or cancelled (in part or in full) due to any reason whatsoever
beyond the control of the organizers (viz. elements of nature, force majeure or orders/directives issued by
any competent government authority), the institute shall not be responsible for any loss or injury
sustained by the candidates directly or indirectly.
